The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
Don't tell us we will have another sanctioning body to go with the other four?? lolol...
The IBO belt is on the line for Joshua v Miller as well. lolol.....
They have done a sneaky and annoying way of promoting the org and their "belts" too, because they gladly (or perhaps without choice) sanction their belts and champions to co-defend with any other belt from the other four organisations at the time- wbo, wbc, wba, ibf. So you HAVE to hear about the ibo at some time. lololol....
A lot different than how the WBO came into our consciousness- sure folks know he Mercer's and Morrison's and Damiani's of this world were the first champs at HW. But no one really cared about the WBO for YEARS afterwards, even as Benntt stopped Morrison for it and Herbie Hide held it for a while and Bowe beat him for it. No one really cared up until Bowe decided to fight Hide for it... an Bowe rubbished that belt in order to fight Holyfield for a 3rd time. In fact, I barely even remember Hide's first title reign as WBO HW Champ.
But Hide's second reignt brought in Vitali, Byrd and Wladimir and it was Wladimir who REALLY brought the WBO into some form of prominence and out of obscurity. For all intents and purposes. People were sill calling ht WBO a fake org up to the mid 2000's.
The IBF was a little different, however. once The legit and recognized lineal champion decided to fight for the IBF strap- in that of Larry Holmes- it was automatically elevated to top tier status because the HW Champ undefeated and lineal champ decided to wear the strap and fight for the IBF.
But God knows what the end game is for the IBO?!?!
We know the WBA has been historically corrupted by the Mafia and Don King, hence the split between their forerunner NBA and to the WBC ran out of another country outside of the influence of the mob, but in the hands of another mob.
Since Don King held the heavyweight champion at the time, Muhammad Ali, you had no where to run from his influence but the crowd of mobsters was getting thicker and the FEDS were really digging into the corruption of the WBA and King was at the centre of most of the fight-fixing and manipulation and had a clear advantage over the other promoters.
Then King with Robert Lee hatched another plan, they decided to create the IBF- one of the highest fee sanctioning bodies, along with the lowest grossing per purse out of the four bodies- and King and Lee got into major trouble with the law with regard to rankings fixing and racketeering- It's all there.
King promoted fighters always rated high in the IBF- and no one knows why?!? But Lee became his own man even though King had him in the pocket- King discounted how greedy the Lee's- Sr. and Jr.- were and are. lolol....
Then Arum during the mid to late 80's endorsed the WBO project which took a while- as said- to get off the ground properly. The WBO was stated to have been started because there was too much corruption in the other organisations.
But it is suspiciously noted that the WBO to this day had and still has a disproportionate amount of Bob Arum fighters as champions and ranked contenders.
So what King did with the IBF Arum did with the WBO.
The WBC to me- probably due to the language barrier- is the only organisation that does not seem to have overt corruption and fight fixing at the core. No wonder why most fighters enjoy the WBC for what it is worth. They also have the smaller sanctioning fees and higher purses.
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
AJ has had the IBO title for a while.
Roy Jones and even Lennox may have had one.
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
Only if you recognize it ;). I wish AJ would drop that piece of bubble gum machine tin, we don't need anymore phony belts. The wbo hvy strap started strong enough off Mercer v Morrison which at the time felt like a super fight in the States. Back when we had more prospect at hvy than you could count ;D. Shame Mercer dropped it and he thought he'd get easy money and name v Holmes. Oops on him. Moorer and Mercer would have been fun while it lasted!
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
Surprised it hasn't gained more clout over the years, from Roy and Lennox, Floyd and Wlad and now Golovkin and AJ, it's always had the big stars proudly promoting it alongside the others.

For a time Kronk fighters only ever fought for WBO titles. So did Frank Warren's.
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
That's all we need is another boxing body. The only reason why Jerry Quarry is not in the HOF is because he didn't win a title in a very tough era. Today I'm sure he would hold a IBO or IBA title.
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
How is the IBO any different to any of the other joke alphabet boys?
I remember when the IBF & the WBO were considered to be joke titles, now a fighter must have them in order to be considered 'undisputed' champion.
One day the IBO will join them, then another & another & another after that.
It's only a matter of time because money & belts talk, even trashy belts that fall out of cereal box packets.

Correctamundo, all started with Hearns and I think followed by the lt hvy one man wrecking crew Moorer. The thing is though the wbo is often not a stand alone. Moorer did and was piling up defenses but in a way it was used as a way to dismiss a fight with him by the other 'big' holders. That and possibility of getting knocked unconscious. Ironically he dropped it later at hvy saying it 'retarded' his career. What wbo champ sits on just that without looking to get to the bigger ones, or as many fighters refer to one by just calling it the "green belt". Fans and networks legitimize these things. The ibo will be looked as..how would Paulie put it..its a side piece to bigger things.
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
Nothing beats the Adolfo Lopez Mateos belt, which will be at stake for the Canelo-Jacobs fight.
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
What a weird thread, ibo has been around since the 80s... Lennox lewis held too I'm pretty sure... they also don't use a crooked ranking system and some computerized system, although I think they just use box received now :S... it's one of the better or maybe the best organization in my opinion
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
I am sure some of these titles must pay the fighter just to stay relevant and use their credibility.

The WBU has been around since the late 80s too. And they ain't no more relevant.
Re: The IBO is creeping into our boxing consciousness!
Lewis was also the IBC 'champ' and so was Tim Puller ???. It hasn't been defended in 9 years. I do think the ibo is all computerized as well. Honestly, who was hailing Lewis the ibo champion as he was surrounded by the major belts other than it's president? It's an afterthought and a ride along ornament. Fans just cannot fall for everything because it's shiny ;D. We get to decide that. Antonio Tarver was some ibo 2 division champ, did anyone really care other than Tarver pitching for them? Belts like this were once called stepping stones. Temp tags on the road to bigger things. Major stars don't need them. James Toney possibly held more now defunct alphabet trinkets than he held 'major' trinkets, it reads like a Chinese menu of alphabet soup groups no one took serious.
