Beginning Boxing Question
I want to learn to box because I love the sport and like the idea of having boxing training be in my workout routine. I don't have professional or amateur ambitions although I'd like to eventually spar.
I belong to New York Sports Club, which is the equivalent of an average gym. The gym has a heavy bag, speed bag, and other pads. Also, there is a professional (may be just amateur) boxer who teaches classes and individual sessions.
I have two questions. Should I go to Gleasons to learn to box rather than my gym? Should I take classes or individual sessions?
Thanks in advance. Any advice is much appreciated.
Re: Beginning Boxing Question
It depends on what you have to spend,if you have the money, individual sessions work better, but they dont give them away

Alright they mate.Get yourself down to the boxing gym and ask the owner if its ok to train there.Tell him what you want from using the boxing gym, weather its to train as a amateur or a hobby or just to keep yourself fit.Dont be too surprised to be turned away from the gym, after all the gym might be for professionals only.Just ask mate. There's no harm in asking!
I joined my local boxing gym when i was about 9 or 10 year old and i was invited with open arms from the local boxing coach.I really enjoyed it and have fond memories to.The old gym i joined is still in operation today and its producing some great fighters!Every time i drive past in me car it brings all those great sparring days back to mind!!;D
Go down and join mate! You'll enjoy it tonnes!!!!!Enjoy."I DID!";)

Gleason's is really ridiculous with their training prices....I'm going to check out Kingsway Gym on 28th street in the city....
last time I went to Gleason's a trainer wanted $250 a month...and I also have to pay $85 for the use of the gym.....
Gleason's is outraegous...another trainer wanted $30-$50 a hour....
Kingsway from what I heard is pretty good.....check it out....

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.
Re: Beginning Boxing Question
imo, no gym is worth going to unless it offers free mitts to newcomers. as far as im concerned, it should come with the price of membership.
to join a gym and then have to pay additional for basic instruction is pure bullshit. working one on one with a pro trainer is something that should come only when you decide to take it to the next level... ie, with serious aspirations...

It really depends on how your gyms set up,mine is set up by appointment only, and when I have you, your ass is mine alone.
There's no overall gym fee, just the session fee.
Most other gyms double dip,but if your confident enough to ask for private sessions, you should expect that.
I try not to judge,I run a small gym,and I own it lock stock and barrell,so I dont have to worry about anything short of replacing equipment.
See,there is something to be said for how we run things in WV,we all run our gyms out of our homes, though if I get someone to buy some of my baseball and football cards, theres a garage across the river I might move it to.
The most well known gym in the state is run out of Butch's basement, its produced champions though.
Re: Beginning Boxing Question
So, I bought a five pack of training sessions at my local all purpose gym. it was expensive and arguably I was ripped off, but my thought was that it will introduce me to boxing and if I want to go from there I can belong to a more professional boxing gym.
Question for the trainers: what should I look for in the first few sessions? What should he be teaching me? Generally, what happens in the first couple of sessions?
Take into consideration that I'm not attempting to become the next great super middleweight champion. I love the sport and I love the workout and I'd like to get in a few rounds sparring.
Thanks again.
