Juan Manuel Marquez retires

Wow. Surprised I hadn't seen this until now. That's major news. Not unexpected, mind you.... but major.
Good for him. He's done it all in boxing. He can retire with his head up... he's had a great career.
One who I always enjoyed fighting... his style was always pleasing to me.
He always came to fight.
Best of luck to the champ. I'm sure he'll have a good career in commentating waiting for him.
Re: Juan Manuel Marquez retires
I've always felt that JMM was underrated. IMO, he beat Pacquiao every fight (who is obviously an ATG). He also beat many good fighters throughout his career and even moved up multiple weight classes where he was clearly uncomfortable at the weight and still won. I never thought that he got nearly the respect that he deserved.
I am a big fan of his. People may be talking about Klitschko retiring but JMM is 100x the boxer Wlad ever was.

Ok, ok..... I'm sure I'll catch hell for this. ;D
One who I always enjoyed WATCHING.

Good call, I was hoping for this a while. Wasn't impressed with the comeback rumours and having thought he had lost a step against Bradley and not really his weight anyway. Good time to go, he's done it all.
Re: Juan Manuel Marquez retires
Roided up he beat Manny. We all know it.

Well Jon Manuel Marquez had a great career but he hasnt fought for 3 years or however long, I thoguht he had already retired, well done to him though!...
I actully would have liked to have seen him take on cotto instead of this japanese fellow for cottos retirement, marquez always seemed to be a guy who kept himself in great shape.

Same here I thought he retired as I've read little about him lately and no posts on him in this section but yeah he'll of a boxer. I really hope to hear manny retire soon but I gotta admit all these guys going is oeving an empty feeling in me. It's making me look that much more forward to canelo v golovkin. Sometimes these retired boxers make appearances at a casino in my area. I can shoot down if I ca bypass the 4 hour line for them to sign something for you. Once in a while I hit it right and the guys I know are running it so I can get a special meet and greet but I never seem to hit it right
Re: Juan Manuel Marquez retires
One of the greats and a favorite. Another who went under the radar early on boxing at the Forum and didn't get the notoriety until he and Norwood engaged in a stink fest, still say mostly fault of Norwood and one Marquez 'won'. Glad he didn't keep piecing himself back together and the talked about Cotto fight did not happen. Guy was a fantastic tactician and pure pleasure to watch work. Thanks for the memories champ.
Re: Juan Manuel Marquez retires
Marquez us 44 years old and he hasn't fought in over three years so I'm not surprised.
Never stopped in 64 fights and holds wins over Pacquiao, Barrera and Casamayor (three hall of famers)
Shame he never fought Morales at some stage and I don't know why that fight never happened.

I also think the injuries played a big part. Pity they couldn't agree on weight for Cotto, would have been fun to watch. He was a pleasure to watch and a marvel at times. Apart from Floyd he was never really beaten decisively. A great fighter and a definite first ballot hall of famer.

Marquez was known for pricing himself out of big fights
I'm glad the Cotto fight didn't happen because it would've been brutal
You're talking about a former featherweight champion in his mid 40s
Fighting a former middleweight champion in his mid 30s.... Marquez gets stopped.

The issue for this fight was the weight, Cotto refused to come down to 148 for the former featherweight. I think at a fair weight and a few years back it's a good fight.
