Berto vs. Ortiz is now a done deal for April 16th
Breaking news: Berto, Ortiz reach agreement | RingTV
The fight will be in Vegas or New York. In a piece of absolute ridiculousness, they've agreed on a catchweight of 145lbs...plus one. So 146lbs then???? What is the point of this? Ortiz is a massive 140lber and will likely come in heavier than Berto. Why does he need a catchweight, and more importantly, as the champion, why did Berto agree to it? It's not like Ortiz is a big enough star to make these demands.
Still, I guess we should just accept these little pieces of bullshit that distort weightclasses and get on with it. Least it's a good fight.

jeez
i guess ortiz`s people really dont rate him that much no longer to be wrapping him up in cotton whool
expect berto to do a number on him and take a comfortable decision, something like 119-109
Re: Berto vs. Ortiz is now a done deal for April 16th
ortiz wont last the distance
probably wont go past 5 rounds
Re: Berto vs. Ortiz is now a done deal for April 16th
Well at least one of em will make a statement, finally. GBP throwing the two 'stars' in to cancel one out a bit. The catchweight 3 card monty is some seriously silly stuff :looroll: I think Ortiz (146 HA?)takes him, down the middle and via tko.

Why are so many title fights at catch weights now iam not a fan of it at all.
Ortiz is overrated and Berto will stop him in 9.

To make a physiological affect.
I don't get the last bit, because Ortiz's rep. has suffered big time since his loss to Maidana.

GBP still must rate him to get him this fight.

whats not to like
mexican/american, good looking chap, exciting fighter, decent record
just a shame he`ll never quite reach the echelons of the sport that the likes of ODLH managed. Berto could well put in a career finishing performance here
Im still of the opinion that andre is ready for the likes of mosley, cotto and hatton

I'm with you on the catch weights, i hate them myself. I also think the same could be said for Berto as well, a little overrated. I think it should be a good fight.
Re: Berto vs. Ortiz is now a done deal for April 16th
Good fight for Berto. His mandatory is a no name the he won't get much credit for. Fighting and beating a young lion is something champions don't do much. Saying that, Ortiz fought a determine MM. And that wasn't his night. MM don't have defense but a good chin. Berto has ok defense and a
?able chin. Ortiz is solid, except his willingness to fight the tough fight until the final bell ring.
BTW, is MM power at 140 better then the power Berto has at 147(146 :p)? I don't think so!!!
To answer the question, why Berto agree to the fight, who else was he going to fight? He was either Ortiz or Bradley. He had to take something. His hitless was Pacman and/or Cotto. They both tied up for 2 more fights. I'm riding with Berto in this fight, in hopes he gets Pacman next(just hoping). If not, Saul Alvarez at 154 for the WBC title.
Re: Berto vs. Ortiz is now a done deal for April 16th
I agree with Paddy...Ortiz to have success early then Berto comes on late to stop him.
Victor's best chance IMO is to catch him early. Remember Berto had some trouble with another southpaw Collazo and was almost knocked down in the first. Granted, Collazo is a better boxer IMO than Ortiz but doesn't have the power Victor has. If Victor can't hurt him I see Berto stopping him late.
