Gomez is a prospect not a contender
the problem i think alot of people are having with gomez is there looking at him like he suspossed to be a top 10 WW contender and he's not. Gomez is a decent prospect IMO. on saturday he did what most prospect do. he beat an old fighter with a good name in an impressive fashion. thats what prospects do. when you look at gomez as a prospect the gatti fight makes more sense.
gomez isn't supposed to be fighting guys like hatton judah cotto & PBF yet.

If Berto would have done that to Gatti or Joel Julio they would have got more credit imo. It's going to be very hard for any of te Contender fighters to break the stigma that comes with being a reality tv fighter.
But I like Gomez to me he's got skills and in a weaker division I'd even fancy him to get a belt. He has no chance at welter weight as it's the strongest division out there but if he were a natural 140 lber I'd have no hesitation in picking him to beat guys like M'Baye and Torres.

But I'm with Bilbo I think... I think Gomez is underrated in skill.
Not much power, but he has the team and the dream, so I don't see it going bad with him.

Just read your post right now. I know that your a big Gomez fan. You collect his posters and stuff. ;D
Naw, but I see skill in him too. And your right, now that u mentioned it, if Julio or Berto did that to Gatti, the Berto or Julio-ans would have gone nuts.
Re: Gomez is a prospect not a contender
:coolclick: Back atcha Boxer. #151
It's just good to see somebody see something for what it is. A good win, for a good fighter. People shouldn't go overboard on him because he beat a game but finished Gatti. There's a long road ahead.
He's a tough fighter but he will have to develop as a fighter more to be thrown in with the lions. That's not a bad thing. He's exactly where he should want to be right now.
Maybe he & a prospect like an Andre Berto will get to test their against each other.
Or he could try to clear the air with Feleciano who is a tough guy in his own right. They had 2 exciting fights already.
Or even another veteran like a Golden Johnson, Oktay Urkal, or even sh*t, I'll say it-----Sharmba Mitchell.
There are many good avenues for his people to take right now.

Oh! my god baggins...
This is by far the most intelligent post you've EVER had here at Saddos.
Damn! your on a roll, 1st the ODLH vs. Zab suggestion now this comment. Whoa! your really picking up the pace here.
Seriously tho you fwocken hit the nail right on, I mean if Berto or Julio or Quintana would have beaten Gatti they would have all gotten the credit for it and would have been talked about like theres no tommorrow.
Well whatever man, I think Gomez derserves the credit hes getting and more. I'm not saying hes World Class or he can beat any of the top WW all I'm saying is for what he did he deserves to be compensated coming in at #10 on my list is how I'm compensating him.

You may be right about Julio & Berto possibly getting more credit if they had done it. But not from me. But Berto is 18-0 w/16 KO's & Julio is 32-1 w/30 KO's (1 loss to Quintana). Gomez= 17-3-2 w/8 KO's. Not that Gomez has lost to any bad fighters Ishe Smith, Manfredo, & Felicano. But it does make his resume pale a little in comparison w/ Berto & Julio. Not that these #'s mean everything right now. But for the most part it's easier for people to start beleiving in those other two guys stats. I'm not even implying that he couldn't or wouldn't beat those 2. I don't know.
The TV stigma is a double edged sword. On one hand he is known as the reality guy. But on the other hand atleast he's already well known. Alot of exposure. He will be fine as long as he's matched smart & keeps working hard. He's a good prospect & a tough guy.
I do beleive that he will be the best that he can possibly be. Is that good enough? Only time will tell.
Re: Gomez is a prospect not a contender
Manfredo didn't do those guys any favors by laying an egg against calzaghe after he said he was gonna whoop him.
Re: Gomez is a prospect not a contender
ehhhh he's decent, but can grow!!

I actually find Gomez's record more impressive than Julio's to be honest. Julio is actually 31-2 as nobody who actually saw his embarrasing display against Cosme Riveria would credit him with a win there. He got his ass handed to him by Quintana and then got given a boxing lesson and was floored by a guy Zab Judah destroyed in about 4 1/2 minutes.
Berto's record is impressive but only because he's a puncher, he certainly didn't impress with his skills last time out.
Wins over Gatti, Manfredo, Brinkley, Kuddour and Feliciano are more impressive than anything on either Berto's or Julio's resume.
If somebody disagrees and wants to point out the great fighters that Julio and Berto have beaten I'm all ears.
It seems to me though that in both cases their biggest wins have been over Contender stars K9 Bundrage and Noberto Bravo. Certainly Gomez is a notch above both of those guys.
Depending on the odds I'd be prepared to bet on a Gomez upset of any of the three prospects Berto, Julio and Chavez Jr.
If he hadn't have been on the Contender and all you had was his record I think many other people would think the same.
@CutMeMick, actually my humour and tendancy to sometimes play the fool (a la Columbo) sometimes obscures the fact that I'm the sharpest analytical mind on the forum. You'll see for yourself soon enough when I win the prediction contest at the end of the year ;)

I agree with alot of what u said. I don't necessarilly think that any of the 3 are much ahead or behind the others. But to the casual viewer (not into all the aspects of boxing). Those records put a**es in the seats.
And for the record. Gomez fought Feleciano 2x's & has not beaten him yet. (0-1-1)
