Markus Beyer dead aged 47: Ex-WBC super middleweight champion suffers ‘short’ and ‘serious’ illness in hospital
German's greatest achievement came when he beat Richie Woodhall in 1999

Beyer passed away in a Berlin hospital following a "short, severe" illness.
His former coach Ulli Wegner said: "I cannot describe my feelings with words.
"Everybody knows that he was my favourite athlete and had, above all, a human component.
"Markus Beyer was a thoroughly fine human being.

"At the moment I feel like someone hit me in the gut. I have to process all that first."
Beyer last fought in 2008 and since 2015 had worked as a pundit on German television channel MDR.
The channel's programme director Wolf-Dieter Jacobi said: "We are dismayed and mourn the loss of a great athlete and wonderful colleague.
"He has shaped his boxing expertise as a member of MDR's 'Sports in the East' over the past few years.

Re: RIP Marcus Beyer
RIP, certainly remember the name. Heck of a fighter 35 (13 KO)-3-1
As much as I enjoy watching fighters with power, I love the fighter with the skill to be able to win without the big bomb in his arsenal. It takes 100% focus for the entire fight and it is such an impressive feat to accomplish. Beyer was like that, not a huge puncher, but smart, crafty, hard to catch clean.

Re: RIP Marcus Beyer
A very good fighter, with an excellent amateur background also. 1 of the few Germans to win a title on the road. RIP champ.

Re: RIP Marcus Beyer
Markus Beyer put on an epic battle against Woodhall when he just about won the title.
I was very surprised when he lost to Catley, that was a big upset.

Re: RIP Marcus Beyer
One of the stalwart German supermiddles who always seemed to have a belt. My first thoughts of him though is always Catley decapitating him in the 12th round to pull off a big upset. RIP.
