So compared to past U.S. heavyweights... Wilder's not very popular in the U.S. Why?
We've thrown this around a bit, along with a few ideas. So exactly why is it you feel Wilder is not as popular in the States as the Mike Tysons, Evander Holyfields, and Muhammad Alis of the past? Is it Wilder himself? If it is... what about Wilder is it that prevents him from being more known/popular? If it's not Wilder himself, is it something else?

Wilder should be huge, perfect record, good physicality, huge puncher, with a shortage of top US fighters he is their best so should be supported more.
Bad promotion, management, less interest in boxing, and poor technique could be factors why he is not so big.

I voted “other” because the answer is that they suffer fools less gladly in the US . The OP Mentioned Ali, Tyson and Holyfield . The answer is there. Wilder is not in their League AND NEVER WILL BE. WHY?
perfect record - against who? 40 fights and who has he beat?
good physicality - and? I can’t remember Arnold Schwarzenegger being in the HOF.
huge puncher - MYTH. watch his knockouts, when does he ever time a punch with very little leverage and just put someone away? Anybody can knock someone else out if they take a run up a throw 10 windmills!

Deontay, like Andre Ward, but from a place faaaaaaar less known for boxing has stayed near his home, fought in places without the big appeal there is in New York, LA, Vegas, hell Florida, or NJ. He's put himself on the map with his performances, but he's not getting the eyes on him because nobody wants to be on a card in the middle of nowhere Alabama instead of fighting in the Garden or Atlantic City or fucking anywhere with a boxing PULSE.
It's not that he's wild and untested or that he doesn't have charisma, he's just not getting the eyes on him the way other fighters do by going to the hotspots of boxing.
Also his career has been really long and he's got a shit ton of fighters who aren't very good on his record, however, that is ok because he was so raw coming out of the Olympics and he needed to prepare himself for the pro game which I think he's done wonderfully.
People make the mistake of looking at Wilder through the lens of say a Mike Tyson or George Foreman, but you need to look at him more like a Michael Grant....Grant got too much too soon and he suffered because of it. Wilder had someone holding the reigns on his career, now whether they held on too long is a question, but he's achieved big things and he hasn't faltered to the point where he's even been in danger of losing so there's that.
So long story short
1. Where he chose to fight
2. Slow and slow and SLLLLLOOOOOOW and steady career development
Those are why he's not as big time as an Olympic superstar like AJ or a homegrown hero like Fury

Yes. But the reason I couldn’t is because there wasn’t a box for the main reason , and that is :

Wilder has been more carefully matched than any heavyweight titleholder in history.
He chose soft opponents like Szpilka and Washington while avoiding decent heavyweight contenders like Takam, Parker, Breazeale, Whyte, Povetkin, and Klitschko. He avoided Ortiz until he saw Ortiz was fading with age.
He knows Fury isn't ready, so that's why he's fighting him now. Before Fury was sick and obese, Wilder avoided him too.
I hate the way Wilder lies about who is avoiding who when it comes to Joshua-Wilder. He knows he's no match for Joshua, who is a bona fide top heavyweight.

I respect both of those guys but I wouldn't consider myself a fan of either. That said, he's making a play for the big money jackpot fight and there's 0 wrong with that from his standpoint. Will he be competitive vs Fury or AJ? Only one way to find out. But he's going to make sure he gets money and as well he should!

You get a guy like Arturo Gatti who was brilliant to watch but was by no means the greatest ever but he had a rabid fan following because he kept having battles at ATLANTIC CITY and in New York which built his fanbase in that geographic area.
Out of 49 total fights Gatti fought 41 of his fights in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut and 3 times in Pennsylvania....so 44 times out of 49 in the Northeastern US...it built him a big fanbase because those are boxing hotspots.

If Wilder can’t take Fury’s head off, he doesn’t deserve to be a champion . If Joshua gets “decimated” by Wilder, then Joshua doesn’t deserve to be a champion. If he can get caught by a guy 2 stone lighter with a windmill that can be seen from outer space, he doesn’t deserve to be a champion.
Tell me the last time Wilder KO’d someone where he didn’t
A. Hit them with a windmill
B. Throw about 10 Windmills
C. Took a 5 yard run up.
Now if you or I did one of the above, we would probably knock someone out ffs. That’s not Boxing.
To me, power is when you throw an uppercut for example with hardly any swing and knock someone out. Like Mike Tyson did. Now that is power.
If the most powerful and effective way to Box was to swing like acwhirling dervish doing an impression of a giant Bambi on ice, then everyone would box like that. But it’s not, is it?
The yanks by and large don’t get sucked in by hype, they only go overboard about quality fighters. That is why Wilder hasn’t touched the hearts of the public.
