Dusty Springfield had a beautiful voice.
I enjoy in no particular order:
1. Natalie Imbruglia
2. Sleeper
3. The Pretenders
4. Joni Mitchell
5. Bjork
6. Nina Simone
7. Judy Garland
8. The Cranberries
9. Ronnie Spector (love some of those classics)
10. Diana Ross
Oh and Blondie for sure. Yes, also some Abba. The Winner Takes It All is a glorious song.
Our Natalie.

Sleeper. Very Smiths like.

There is something really beautiful when an older artist covers their younger work. In Mitchell's case the voice is older, but richer and though life decays there is a fractured, cracked beauty.

The closest to jazz I will go.

I love Audrey, but she couldn't really sing. Judy did it better IMO. Morrissey the best though of course, but he is not a woman. Yet.

I know the thread is about female vocalists, but for me it is more about the song itself and thus it doesn't matter if there are technical flaws. The flaws only add to character for me. You can have a perfect voice, but if the music has no heart, then I think it is a useless tool. Plus some of the technically impressive female voices just sound a bit annoying to me. I prefer Debbie Harry over Celine Dion every day of the week because I think the songwriting is more interesting.
I love Beverley Knight, and I love this song
