Soto-Gonzalez in Tijuana.

ByBoxing Press 10/12/200410/12/2004

HUMBERTO SOTO HEADLINES CMXsports AND GUILTY BOXING’S “CMX BOXEO DE CAMPEONES.”

December 10, LIVE from El Foro in Tijuana, Mexico. There will be no love lost south of the border when the WBC’s No. 2-rated contender HUMBERTO “ZORITA” SOTO, 35-5-2 (20 KOs), from Los Mochis, Mexico goes mano-a-mano against former WBC FECARBOX champion ISMAEL “BOLILLITO” GONZALEZ, 17-8 (7 KOs), from Mexico City, rumble in the ten-round super featherweight main event. Boxing fans from around the world can catch all the action via a live internet stream, and access the replay, at www.cmxsports.com for a monthly subscription fee of just $4.95. The series airs every Friday night, beginning at 11 P.M. ET / 8 P.M. PT. Subscribers will also be able to access archived fight footage and get behind-the-scenes interviews, previews and articles. The broadcasts will be available in English and Spanish. Newly elected World Boxing Hall of Fame induct, “The Colonel” Bob Sheridan, a veteran of more than 750 world title broadcasts, and former NFL All-Pro kicker and veteran sports announcer Benny Ricardo, will be handling the English broadcast’s — “CMX Champions of Boxing” — blow-by-blow and color commentary, respectively. The Spanish language feed of the broadcast will feature former five-time world champion Manuel Medina providing the color commentary to Roberto Sosa’s blow-by-blow.

“CMX Champions of Boxing” is also televised on BEN Television, a free to air channel that covers all-over the Great Britain and Ireland markets and reaches more than seven million homes on the BSKYB platform on channel 184 Electronic Programme Guide in the UK alone. BEN Television also reaches out to Western Europe and North Africa collectively reaching more than 30 million satellite accessible digital homes. Soto, currently world-rated No. 2 by the WBC, No. 7 by the WBO and No. 9 by the IBF, is riding a two-year, 12-bout winning streak — eight by knockout — including a WBC FECARBOX title victory over Emidgio Gastelum at The Orleans in 2002. Soto’s knockout victory over Wilson Alcorro on May 28, was the main event of the debut broadcast of “CMX Boxeo de Campeones.” Soto has fought five times this year, winning four of them by knockout. In his last fight, on the September 17 edition of “CMX Boxeo de Campeones,” against undefeated Top-ten contender Jorge Solis, 25-0-2, Soto was on his way to another knockout victory, having dropped Solis in the third round. But a cut over Solis’ right eye, caused by an accidental head-butt, stopped the fight before it could go to the judges’ cards. The fight was ruled a “No Contest.”

Gonzalez dethroned WBC FECARBOX featherweight champion Armando Hernandez via a hard-fought split decision last year. He lost the title in February, a controversial majority decision to Gamaliel Diaz. Both fights are considered “fight of the year” candidates in Mexico. Gonzalez has vowed to leave nothing to chance when he takes on Soto. “Soto represents the biggest fight of my life and I will break him down before I knock him out,” declared Gonzalez. “Whe he leaves the ring Friday night, they will be calling him ‘DeSoto’ because he will be obsolete like that car!”

“The only similarity between a DeSoto and me, is that I will be firing on all eight cylinders,” retorted Soto. “I didn’t work my way up to the top of the ratings just to let a guy like Gonzalez stop me before I fight for the world title. He is going to think he was run over by a DeSoto after I am through with him!” The seven-bout undercard will feature an eight-round mini flyweight battle between Luis Valdez, 11-4-1 (7 KOs), from Tijuana against crosstown rival Benito Abraham, 9-4-1 (6 KOs).

CMXsports and Guilty Boxing will produce forty-eight two-hour shows a year over a three-year period with two cards each month emanating from Las Vegas –The Orleans Hotel & Casino and the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino. The remaining two shows per month will be broadcast from different locations, including, southern California and Mexico. Recent shows have emanated from Las Pulgas Club and the larger El Foro in Tijuana, Mexico. “CMX Boxeo de Campeones” showcases the very best in action-packed Latin fights, a staple of Guilty Boxing shows over the past decade, as well as an extensive amount of high-quality features on boxing. CMXsports will complement the broadcast with the Internet’s capability to provide fans around-the-clock, behind-the-scenes information about the fighters before and after the show, and the state-of-the-art CMXlivecam, allowing fans unprecedented access to the fighters on a real-time basis. In short, CMXsports is leveraging the latest in Internet streaming and interactive technology to produce an unprecedented experience for the viewer.

  • Chris Billam-Smith vs Ryan Rozicki 03/06/2026
Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. CBS became world champion when more talented British boxers like Okole and Riakporhe did not. In fact he beat both and forced them to go up to heavyweight. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Jai Opetaia saying what many of us think 26/05/2026
Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. Jai is obviously considered by most to be the top dog at cruiser, a division which unfortunately lacks the big names. Surely avoided by many. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
