Default Happy birthday to the Hit Man

A very happy birthday to the original and best Hit Man, Tommy Hearns.

A freak of nature, supremely skilled and the only boxer to outbox greats like Ray Leonard, Wilfred Benitez and also the difficult Virgil Hill.

But best known for that truly devastating straight right, delivered like a rifle with speed and accuracy.

A warriors mentality, frightened of nobody, would go toe to toe with anyone and who never avoided anybody in his career. A man who genuinely wanted to hurt whoever was in the ring with him, even in sparring!

A nightmare to face, he would have given serious problems to any welterweight who ever fought.

    Happy birthday, buddy.

Best right hand in the history of boxing IMO. His chin was his Achilles heel. He seemed to have little other weaknesses. Huge puncher, very fast hands, great jab, devastating right hand, tall, big reach, knew how to box.

Yeah, but the chin thing seems to have passed into officially recognised history.

But I remember correctly, it was only Marvin Hagler and Iran Barkley that ever stopped him (I think?), and the knockout punches would have sparked out most fighters.

Hearns perceived vulnerability was possibly magnified by his being off balance quite a lot, his balance was his Achilles heel in my book, and being tagged with fairly harmless shots that looked as if they hurt him. His trainer always privately said that his balance was shit, but he made up for it with hand speed and power.

He could also gas out in the later rounds ..... at most of his early career he was huge for his weight and had boiled down so much he didn't have energy reserves.

Anyway, he himself never doubted his chin. You can see that from the way the way he engaged and fought. If he doubted his chin, he had all the skills to turn into a safety first boxer (a more skilled version of Wlad), but he didn't do that.

I can see how biased I am though.

I use to think the same thing when people said the same thing about Terry Norris when he was stopped by Julian Jackson who is the hardest puncher in history. However Terry was knocked down and out by Simon Brown, a jab no less and was wobbled a number of times and stopped.

Hearns was wobbled on numerous occasions Roldan, Kitchen and Leonard hurt Hearns.

Floyd would have been KTFO or stunk the place out getting out boxed.

just curious. You have Hearns on your sig pic (I think that's what it's called), do you honestly think Floyd would've beat Hearns, or are you winding up @Master?
I'm not having a pop , it's not an outlandish opinion , like I said, just curious.
For the record, IMO Hearns wins. I don't think Floyd would get past Hearns's jab. Styles makes fights.
