There we go... Again... people will possibly go via the ridicule mode/route again, in being vocal to minimize the real significance of this fight, all because it is at a catchweight fight of 144lbs!

Expect all the "boxiing purists", the naysayers to this non-conforming fight weight limit, to fill this thread with their important views.

Meanwhile, it will be worthwhile observing how the ramifications of this fresh news for this JMM vs PBF encounter, will unfold in the coming weeks leading to the fight. Hopefully, it will only have the minimum suggestions as to the fight's being less important, tarnished, and etc... on account of the "catchweight".

Personally, I like the fight at the newly disclosed, specified weight of 144lbs. It will give some semblance of fair play for the Marquez camp to even things up a bit. Bridge the gap between two HOF fighters of different weightclasses unbelievably facing each other for a September 19th, ring date. Boxing fans worldwide are indeed blessed!

At 147lbs, if the fight limitation is where it will be at... will blatantly be suicide for Marquez, even without one discounting all of his God-given skills and craftiness atop the square ring.

I suspect, that Juan Manuel will come in even lighter at around 142lbs, markedly lower than the specified 144lbs limit... this fellas is JMM simply being the wise person that he surely is. Past and present, he has shown this quality.

He cannot keep the excess weight in comparison to his ultimate heaviest in a successful fight, and at the same time be the wiser man!
It will be speed and precision, Marquez' vehicle for success, which will be at its least effective end when counter balanced with excess weight, IMHO.

If performance is what is needed for this particular fight more than power, why go for power (additional weight)..... even if you can?

Interesting enough I remember most of the posters here called the other little fighter that was fighting at a catchweight a pussy, coward, and a punk. I sure wonder will the same standard be applied in this fight?

BTW I love JMM as a fighter and don't think he's a punk or coward.

Its a tragically boring debate. Come fight night for both of these we'll all be excited and rightfully so, they're two really big fights.

Two thumbs up for this post - one for using the phrase tragically boring, and another for having the sense to see that this is a great fight.

Exactly. I think you're entirely missing the point I'm making.

JMM isn't going to get stick because:

    a) it's not for a belt.

    b) JMM didn't call Floyd out. (and tbh that's the long and short of it)

    c) JMM doesn't have a team of rabid fanboys who will try and talk like he is a legit welterweight because he fought above 140 pounds.

I really don't think that Floyd will struggle to make 144... when he fought ODLH he weighed in at 150 pounds... on fight night he weighed... 150

People can cry foul of pac 'haters' etc all they want, but the fact is that we're talking about two different situations here guys...

pbf fighting a smaller man and if he wins this should not boost him back up to the top of p4p list.

on the other hand if jmm wins then i wont have any problem if he gets the no. 1 p4p.

Definetly, it would be an amazing win for JMM and I hope he pulls it off.

Floyd will definetly have no problem in making 144 so there shouldn't be any excuses.

JMM is really up against it though.

I don't know about the veracity of the above statement... it does make the video below seem like a BIG LIE though!

JMM definitely called out PBF after beating Diaz. Allegedly, it was the main reason that PBF decided to fight him.

The size is one of the main advantages for PBF and Cotto (maybe his only one) and will play a role in each fight.

    Sorry... poor word choice...
(calling out a retired fighter isn't the same as pushing to make a fight happen)

Did JMM management push for the fight and pull Floyd out of retirement or did Floyd's team decide that they want to make a come back and pick JMM out of a list of possible fights?

Unless JMM's team was primarily making this fight happen, I really can't see the similarity with Pac-Cotto.

Regardless, the facts still remain that Floyd will have no problems hitting the weight, nobody is trying to say that it should be for a Welterweight strap or recognised as anything other than a catchweight fight.

Pac-Cotto and PBF-JMM are both good fights, unfortunately mostly because of pac fanboys Pac-Cotto is surrounded by more bullshit.

Nobody is trying to make less of this fight... or Pac-Cotto. The only problem people have with Pac-Cotto is about stupid fan boys trying to make MORE (yeah... it goes both ways :0) of it than they should do... saying a catchweight fight should be for a title etc based on name value only.

Golden Boy did push for the Mayweather fight heavily off the back of the Diaz win. They chose to push him for the fight instead of Mosley because they were waiting on the Hatton-Pacquiao winner for Shane. Which kinda didn't work out
