Default Henry Cooper's Hook on Ali vs Joe Frazier's Hook on Ali

Isn't it safe to say that Cooper's Hook vs Ali (Clay) in their first fight was more powerful than Frazier's hook? Obviously Frazier's hook gets much more attention due to the magnitude of the fight the and punch symbolizing a capstone of the event itself. But Cooper layed a friggin hammer to Ali's chin.

Ali was younger, inexperienced, lighter when he took that punch against Cooper. Joe's was more fearsome but Cooper's was not seen and therefore hurt more.

Yeah I mean there are a lot of factors that don't make it a fair comparison. Like mentioned by Master, Ali was younger and lighter.

Also worth mentioning, Henry landed his hook in the 4th round after some relatively light action. Joe Frazier landed his hook in the 15th round of an all-out war. I think both guys were running on fumes at that point and it was far from the hardest left hook Frazier ever threw.

Henry had a great left hook. So did Quarry. But Frazier was on a different level.

Thumbs up Re: Henry Cooper's Hook on Ali vs Joe Frazier's Hook on Ali

    6′2¾″, 212 lb Muhammad Ali.

    6′ 1½″, 185½ lb Henry Cooper:

    6′ 2″, 191¼ lb Sonny Banks:

    5′ 11½″, 205½ lb Smokin' Joe Frazier:

^ They ALL dropped Ali with the left hook.

That's why I could see the 6′¾″, 190 lb Jack Dempsey with his murderous left hook KOing Ali..

    Yep, it's in the bag...

Not to take anything away from the great Smokin' Joe.... but these guys were both dead tired toward the end of the fight. Also, remember Ali's penchant for leaning way back to avoid the hooks. Not saying he was off balance, because Joe's hook landed flush.... but IMO Cooper's hook was a lot more damaging.

Also, Ali bounced up almost immediately from Frazier's hook.... almost embarrassed to have been caught at that crucial moment in the fight. Against Cooper, Ali was completely dazed, and in danger of not making it out of the round.

both shots were murderous. Ali just had maybe the best chin in HW history.

Cooper took advantage of Ali pulling straight back from punches; frazier took advantage of poor punching habits. In the case it was how Ali dropped his hand to throw an uppercut.
I read that the force of Henry Cooper's left hook, after traveling 5 inches, was the same as a 16 pound bowling ball striking the headpin. Frazier threw his left hook off his left leg, which certainly is effective (especially for shorter fighters), but I don't think that it is the best way to do it. I think that his hook is considered 'on another level' is because he threw it so many times against Ali; while definitely an effective weapon, I don't think he had the best hook ever nor is he particularly close to the top.

Both left hooks had the same effect, put him on the floor Ali had a hell of a chin, both Cooper
and Frazier had a hell of a left hook, HW fights at there best I was a kid watching Ali V Cooper
on the TV with my Dad happy days.

Sir 'enry hurt Ali but I think Ali was allergic to Smokin' Joe's left hook hence the swelling

Ali was out on his feet when Cooper dropped him. Dundee also used smelling salts in the corner to revive Ali, when the round ended. Lucky for Ali that this did not happen early in the round or the middle of it, he would have been stopped.

Who would have thought Clay would have gone on to be the greatest ever heavyweight ever after he got put down by Banks and Cooper?

Funny, I think Ali was only down 3 times and they were all off of left hooks (not counting Wepner's KD, which clearly was a slip)

    Ol Enry,

His left hook was quicker than Joe Frazier's. And Henry landed it 'left' on-the-button.

It landed flush on Cassius Clay's chin. It nearly took Clay's head clean off his neck.

    I loved it........
