Toney on the ropes was superb! Jones Jr was explosive turning off. Benitez and Azumah Nelson master class. Old man version of Holmes made a second career out of it and just ran guys into simple 1-2s all night.

He was an Olympic gold medalist who had just destroyed an over hyped Tommy Morrison and was viewed as a threat to Evander Holyfield prior to the loss. Holmes was masterful that night, completely befuddling Mercer and nullifying his strength and offense. Great win for Larry in my opinion.

Watch Hop vs Tito, Floyd vs Hatton and Jesus Chavez, and Oscar vs Genaro Hernandez for great displays of fighting off the ropes. Toney and Roy were very good calls, as both were effective along the ropes. It is interesting, however, that while guys could be effective fighters off the ropes they could also have nights where the strategy hurt them. Think Roy vs Glen Johnson (I know Roy was slipping), Toney vs Tiberi, and Floyd vs Castillo (first fight).

I recall Roger Mayweather being effective off the ropes as well.

He wasn't just waiting on bombs with Morrison he was positioning him and dragging his inexperience anchor out before sinking him. The jab of Mercer hurt the best he fought, including Holmes who was rocked across the ring with one in the 1st round.

Because he's a master boxer who in this context at the very least, is as good if not better than anything you care to mention at any point in time.

Toney was at home on the ropes. You see guys, pro's with good pedigree who aren't comfortable under fire, human nature I guess. Toney was the complete opposite. Totally at one.
