    Default Tommy Hearns

I just watched ESPN and they showed a special on the REAL Hit Man. It reminded me just how good Tommy Hearns really was - the guy was an asolutely huge welterweight (bloody hell, he was a 6'2" middleweight and was not dwarfed in the light-heavies). He had elongated arms, massive shoulders and blinding speed.

Everyone knows about the right hand, but he was some special boxer as well - not many people outboxed ray Leonard for 3 fights!

He was always fit, never shirked his training and you were guaranteed excitement whenever he fought - one of the most electrifying performers to climb into a ring. Yes, people say his chin was not the best, but when he was stopped (never counted out!) he really took a good shot. He would have been competitive in any era.

Any naysayers out there, or do you want to join me on remembering a true modern great?

Hearns was definately great. He's still fighting, and just recently had a match. I think he is fighting at light-heavy. Of course he's not the same. But, Hearns was truly exciting in his day.

Yes. They actually fought on the same card. Don't know much about his son though. He hasn't made any big waves yet.

Tommy Hearns was one of the best welters of all time. The man had fabulous boxing skills, great power, speed, defence was good, if only he had a chin!

I will join you in remembering what he was, I cannot disagree with you except he fought Leonard 2 times and in a 12 rd world he wins hands down both fights, in a 15 rd world he loses both by the same result. Growing up here in the Detroit area I have been to every fight he ever had here including his last 2 fights in his comeback. ( I wish he would retire already ) All his fights here were great except his last 3 fights. He was a great boxer & puncher, if he was in his prime today, none of the current crop of welters would have a chance including PBF.

A true legend who was unlucky because he was in the same era as Hagler and Leonard.
I hate that he is still fighting, because now it takes away from his career

You won't find an ounce of hate in me when it comes to the Hitman. Great fighter, one of the greatest imo.

I just saw Hearns interviwed at the Contender event earlier this week on boxingtalk. He is seriously slurry now. Sounds worse than Holyfield, Toney and Richard Steele.

What do you guy's think about a Felix Trinidad vs Tommy Hearns fight at 154 in their primes. Would have been an epic slug fest.

Yeah in the amatures, HEARNS HAD NOT DEVELOPED HIS STYLE YET. He had something like 12 k.o.s in 100 and some amature fights, plus he was like a toothpick and did'nt like much taller then Pryor in there fight, but had they fought in 81 or 82, Hearns would have crushed Pryor wit that devastating right cross, if Pryor got hit with Hearns right cross as many times as Arguello's....plus Tommy's blinding hand speed, it would have been a short nite for pryor, a bad match up for the hawk!!!
