Default What's the deal with tipping in the US?

As y'all know I'm off to the states in a few weeks (NY, Vegas and Florida) and I'm somewhat concerned that I'm gonna get rinsed by the doormen, bellhops, concierges, taxi drivers that expect a tip.

Posters doing gags about 'not eating yellow snow' will be dealt with using extreme prejudice.

    That is all.

    Yes.
Those people all expect a tip.

Best bet is to really turn up the intensity of your accent & play ignorant to the tradition.
If the heat is on & you sence hostility, reply "No speeky Eenglese" fart in the cab, then run like hell.

Like a ram getting ready to jam the lamb

Well only tip people that did their jobs well or people you expect to see again (door men etc)....also I know in smaller cities the cabbies can be haggled with especially if you use them more than once

...I believe they prefer malt liquor or crack....just an FYI

Damned Yankees and their cumpulsary tipping! In the South we have something called HOSPITALITY, you can tip if you like and we appreciate it. If you don't we won't be as nice but still better than yankees

I lived in good ole Georgia for over a year the only hospitality shown was on Sunday and the first half of monday...it is just as rude as anywhere in the United States...and for the record It's not "yankees", that is a baseball team in NY....it's Northerners (north), Midwesterners(midwest), Easterners(east coast), Westerners (west coast) and Southerners (losers).... yankees was an insult given to Americans by the English.....only idiots/ignorant embrace such a term as "yankees"...standard tip in the US is as follows...double the first number in the bill....10 dollars=2 dollar tip.....watch out for cabbies....they can have the meter running before you get in the vehicle....they also take you the LONG way sometimes as well......Southerners don't tip because they are cheap bastards.....that and low wages....

Actually I'm watching a programme on Channel 4 as we speak called 'Gods own Army'. It's about homeschooled kids from the midwest 'Baberton and 'Akrin' ('scuse the spellings B) - Ohio.

There parents are sending them to Patrick Henry College.

It's a bit weird as these kids are being groomed specifically to influence the future political agenda...

that's just creepy.....I don't agree with home schooling at all....and as far as electoral votes go I believe its 26...enough to swing an election...damn bush....I was ashamed to call myself a buckeye when the election fiasco was going on.....
