Lol my friend and colleague at work are like this. I love boxing, he loves MMA. We're always just selling points to each other about our favourite sports. It gets funny because he'll be sitting down doing admin and I'll start jabbing him in the head and giving him soft body shots to piss him off. He'll wait for me to sit down to do my admin and put me in some ridiculous choke hold. We've even gone as far as agree to a sparring match where I will box and he will 'MMA' lol

I personally hate MMA and find it boring but I have a lot of respect for my friend who loves it. He has had me watch video's and explained it to me. While I do take in his points, it's just not my cup of tea. However he is a very intelligent guy so it is obviously dependent on what your tastes are. Its not the case that MMA fans are all blood-hungry thicko's.

Nothing better than watching two guys swap punches ala Hagler/Hearns, Castillo/Corralles, Vazquez/Marquez, etc. That's what makes boxing great to watch.

How did this corpse of a thread get revived? I love both sports and competed in both. I personally enjoy MMA more as a competition and feel I get a better product for my dollar right now. For the most part I see the fights I want to see, with a decent amount on free TV. I pay $40 and get 5-7 fights where usually three are of some significance...Entertainment is subjective, so if its too violent for you, you don't appreciate the ground fighting aspect or its just not your bag thats fine...I only get irritated when the talent/athleticism of its competitors are questioned. Top level MMA fighters are usually world class atheletes and very skilled in numerous combat sports...Whether you enjoy the sport, its fighters deserve respect.

I have a similar situation. He always starts off with "Boxing is lame because......." and then he finishes up with something a long the lines of "I'd just need to do this and the fight would be over" which i usually respond with "No, it wouldn't work like that" (mind you he's just a fan and has never done anything mma related in his life). Oh well, what can you do about it?

I'll watch MMA if it's on, it is entertaining. I certainly don't put any effort forth to see who's who
and I won't pay for a PPV. I don't really dig the ground game, I can appreciate the skill and
athleticism of it, it just doesn't interest me. But if it's on I'll watch.

Boxing is my first love, I want to know about the fighters, It still gets my heart racing when
    a close match comes on.

I can definately see where NEW, YOUNGER or CASUAL fans would choose MMA over boxing. The politics
are WAAAAYY dumbed down (a good thing) in MMA. You can say this guy is the Heavyweight champ
(I think it's Randy Couture for the UFC), you can't really do that in boxing (Unless there is a big 4 alpha-unification) We could all agree that WLAD is the best heavyweight there (although I know we don't just say for argument we do) When all is said and done Wlad is 25% Heavyweight champ, Oleg is 25% Heavyweight champ,Ruslan is 25% Heavyweight champ and Sultan is 25% Heavyweight champ.
Then we have boxing with 17 weight classes and 4 champs per weight class 68 potential champs total
that is far too many to know about, UFC has 5 weight classes and 1 champ per weight class.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

A few of my friends are into MMA and I can't get into it to save my life. There just doesn't seem to be any drama in the fights. It's beyond boring when they're on the ground, plus it looks kinda gay. To me there is not better sport than boxing MMA will never overtake boxing.

I 1st and foremost am a boxing fan, have been since being a kid and my dad taught me the basics of boxing. Where I lived there weren't any gyms, pretty far away, so I got into karate. I stayed with it for years, but became disenchanted as my particular school would only allow feet, hand, chest and face guards when sparring. It was ridiculous as I felt more like a gay marshmallow than a fighter, so I quit. I had always wanted to do muay thai but there were definately no schools for that. One of my very good friends in high school was a bad ass wrestler and use to throw me around during high school years and though I never really liked wrestling, as it seemed like rough gay porn, you cannot get on the ground or in a clinch with a good wrestler and not feel intimidated. So though I never decided to get on a team, I respected the skills and raw power a wrestler can bring to you; very hard to box when you're on your back trying to get up or not be tied in a knot. Remember not everyone can box, not everyone is good with their hands or fast or clever that way, and in the street I will definately try to take a guy 40 pounds heavier than me to the ground if possible, before trying to stand with him. It's survival.... But obviously as far as the sporting aspect is concerned, boxing for me all day. The most mpressive form of a physical chess match on this planet, with the exception of 2 very good muay thai fighters. And if you've never seen 2 of them go, then you're missing out on a brutal, savvy war. Watching a prime Floyd or RJJ is light years ahead of pure entertainment then 2 guys humping on the floor, even though there is a ton of skill involved being a grappler, just not real pleasing to the eye if you don't know what's going on. Watching 2 great boxers whittle away at each other is an art, much like an old man sitting on his porch whittling away with a knife on wood. The picture becomes clearer as it goes on, and the art is plain to see. But mma or boxing, their's an audience for both, either watch it or not, but not everyone can do one or the other, so each should get respect because it is combat. Sorry to ramble, just my opinion.

Probably not, but go back to the very early days of mma and watch a 170 man named Joyce Gracie fighting guys 280 pounds with no gloves on and watch him pull out the victory just with superior grounds skills; pretty impressive. All in the eye of the beholder; but yeah I'll take a Gatti/Ward any day
