    Default Using The Ropes

Is it ever a good idea to lean on the ropes and let an opponent wear himself out while you cover up and rest for a few seconds? Should this only be attempted if you're experienced or confident that your opponent is wild with his punches and not likely to get through your defense?

I can see how this might work against newer people who don't really know what they're doing but would be riskier when you get to a competitive level.

Used it last night, not to wear him out but to make him let his hands go, get him square on (thats one way i neutralised his southpaw stance,) and let go with combos. Also found it handy way to escape as i get him close grab him and turn. (Note: last night this turn technique turned into a fierce competition of strength when things got heated so it may not be advisable.)

That makes sense as far as opening their stance.

I feel like it lets you lean back a little quicker and further because you don't have to worry about putting too much weight behind you, and conversely you can use the spring to get a little extra forward momentum to spin out or counter.

I can see how that could get messy though. Still, I'm not sure I follow you on the grabbing and turning. Isnt it easier to spin out and let him turn into you on his own? I probably just dont understand the technique... can you describe how that works?

Id more recomend sliding on the ropes, you still get to lean and rest, but your not such an imobile target

Very similar to spinning off actually, in fact i think their the same except i feel vulnerable when i spin, as if i get hit a flash knockdown may occur ya no.
    Ok Im an orthodox.
If he advances ery quickly, i initiate a clinch quickly,Draw him close and then move my left (rear foot) clockwise, turning the opponent in the process, then shoving him off me, he's at the ropes and im mid ring...Hope i explained that ok.

And i get what u mean about the leaning/support thing it does work i think, but wouldn be incorparated with my style at all.

Nigel Benn used to utilise the ropes a lot to power punch, leaning and almost catapulting himself for added momentum. Dangerous tactic but may be worth the risk if u can hook well.

I think I get that.. do you mean moving your right foot back though? Maybe if you gave the guy a little push forward at the start of that you could use his response to help pull him around.

Donny they call it turning a man. But done properly hes turning you by you using his strength against himself. Get hold of the back of his elbow and press he will react and pull you around, then youve got an open house to rob so to speak and him in no posstion to do anything having lost his line.
Pain lasts a only a minute, but the memory will last forever....

Nice trick that I see a lot of good pros use.
