There are some fighters who don't do the heavybag, and I can't imagine why.

Oh yes I have. I shadowbox and punch the heavybag a good bit, although I'll get into it for a couple of weeks then slack off for a couple of months, so I never get any better. (I have a pair of bag gloves for the bag and boxing gloves for the shadowboxing.

Assuming the goal is boxing competitively, you have good coaches who know how to help you make the most of it, it's controlled and you have a few decent sparring partners I'd choose sparring.

Also assuming you can only choose one of the options there.

sorry man... the 2oz gloves and 20lb bag that came with your kids boxing kit don't count.

There is no greater exercise than sparring done properly.

While I enjoy all aspects of training, I feel that sparring is the most effective. Controlled sparring allows you to get a feel for footwork, and measure the distance of your punches against a human opponent. I feel there is no better way to train, but I also feel it should not be overused.

10 oz. bag gloves, 14 oz boxing gloves, and a 120 lbs. heavybag.

But I'm missing the speedbag, the jump rope, the double end bag, and the sparring partner (not to mention the headgear), so I guess I am fake. But still.....
