What pace are you doing it at Ice?
Because if your doing that much all at full speed, your only re-enforcing bad habits

I guess I do a few different types of shadow. The easy warm up, all out and partnerwork shadow (good fun - got that idea from one of Scraps posts). I like doing it in the ring sometimes to think about how i use that space a bit. Also like shadow when I need to practice my footwork. I find it harder to simulate normal movement when I'm working the bag.

I do it in rounds of 2 to 3 mins, probably anywhere between 4 rounds to a whole session. If I have aches and pains i find it's the best boxing specific thing for training without aggravating niggling injuries too much. Bag work or skipping can be a bit rough on a sore back etc.

Three to six minutes each day, with my full concentration.

I have an opposing view on shadow boxing. When there's no target to stop your momentum, you stop it yourself, which in itself is a bad habit. Everything evolves. Just because it was done in the dark ages, doesn't mean it's always right. Like ancient Chinese medicine. Practicing moves and drilling in combos is good to a certain degree, but not necessarily everything about it is good. Just my opinion.

The best thing you can do is watch film of yourself. Or adopt moves from experienced guys and emulate them very slowly and repetitiously on the bag, which will develop the (good) habit as well.

    For example...

When I first started I was dropping my left when throwing my right (typical of a newb). To correct it I'd start with my left hand out touching the bag (as though I just threw the jab), and then would throw the right slowly and properly while brining my left back to my cheek at the same time. ie, half the motion. Then I did the full 1-2 over and over and over, eventually at full speed. Problem solved and I can't do it any other way. Automatic now. And it didn't require a mirror.

Think you're missing the point a bit.

Shadowboxing is often used as a warm up before you engage in stronger physical activity.

But you can pratice the right cross you did without a bag/shadow boxing to the same effect.

Once you're very strong and fast, you'll have to pull the punches somewhat or you will feel the elbow/shoulder over extend causeing damage. Same can be said for lot's of work on a bag though.

well, to each his own. I like to stretch and shake it out.

it's also used as a visual aid. I do, however--and come to think of it--work my jab an awful lot in the mirror.

Von, one point not touched on. Instructed Shadow Boxing Im a believer being with and instructing and asking why when my lads are doing it. Why be there why do that why do that why do the other we talk while working througth set peices thinking all the time. There are many thought patterns can be instilled this way. But I do agree many left to there own devices completely fuck up and are not thinking what they are actually doing.

scrap, that's a perfectly valid point. cc.

antother thing, now that i think about it, i probably did it a lot more when i was going to the gym 4x a week... ie, before i moved. i'd watch my footwork a lot, for one thing, and jab, and making sure i was brining my hands back.

When I can get my fat arse down the gym which is not as offten as I would like due to looking after 2 years old daughter I do around 3 or 4 rounds of shadow boxing in the ring which has mirrors on the wall so you can watch your self and try and improve on any mistakes.

Porky, unless you look directly into the mirror facing it everything else is wrong.

I got to disagree there.I use the mirror to keep an eye on my footwork as I move about.

By the way I got to add I no longer box I just try and help out in the gym when I can.

I do six amateur rounds as my warm up.
I then cool down doing 20 mins or so.
