Those ballers and shotcallers over at Golden Boy are about to electrify the boxing world…again!
Boxingconfidential.com has learned that Cuban clouter and WBO interim lightweight champion Joel Casamayor is going to spurn a mandated fight against WBO, WBA and IBF lightweight beltholder Nate Campbell. Instread, GBP is going to keep the party restricted to friends and families.
Juan Manuel Marquez, the Mexican ringmaster who pines for a third crack at Megamanny Pacquiao, is going to fight Casamayor.
So where does that leave new GBP property and former triple 135-pound beltholder Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz? Diaz, you will recall, was going to cross gloves on Sept. 13 in Diaz’s hometown of Houston against Casamaytor.
Word is that Diaz manager Willie Svannah kept thinking about the clever and frustrating style of Casamayor and that he finally told the Goldens he would prefer the simple style of Kastidis. It is believed Savannah kept asking for an opponent they could "showcase" Diaz against and that his argument was that, win, lose or draw, Casamayor could make Diaz look bad.
Looking bad is not an option after the beatdown Campbell administered to the previously unbeaten Diaz in Cancun.
Never fear because Michael “Rocky” Kastidis will be fighting Diaz.
It is believed but unconfirmed that Casamayor-Marquez may be set for an October date while Diaz and the rockchinned “Rocky” from Down Under stick to their Sept. 13 date and the Houston venue.
So what becomes of Campbell’s soup? Well, newly-ranked #1 WBO lightweight contender Joan Guzman stands ready, willing and more than able to mix it up with the “Galaxxy Warrior.”
Despite these hot and heavy rumors, GBP matchmaker Eric Gomez (not a source herein) told people Tuesday that his company intends to win a May 27 WBO Campbell-Casamayor purse bid.
