Very interesting fight. I never was a big fan of Winky but always respected the guy. I'm not a big fan of that type of fighter but just the same respect his ability and always tuned in to see him fight. He'll come in in shape regardless of the layoff. There may be some rust and if Paul is on his game Wnky is in for a tough night. But Winky is Winky and I'm not making any predictions just yet. LETS GET IT ON!!!
Hopefully Williams will now leave 147 for good. He doesn't belong there. He's a marginal 154 fighter, with a height better suited for 160. His fight with Winky ought to be pretty interesting. Not sure who I'd pick. Williams has a high workrate... Winky's a defensive specialist. Probably looking at Williams by decision.
Williams has long arms, right? It seems to me that should make it easier for him to find holes in Winky's defense.
good matchup
all relevant logic suggests PW should have way too much for winky to trouble him.
But Winky is so good at taking a fighter out of his comfort zone and forcing him into the trenches i`ll actually be throwing a few quid on a wright upset when this comes around ala:hopkins over pavlik
one dangerous horrible bloke
Winky impossible to look good against so fair play to Williams for taking the challenge. I think Winky may have slipped enough for Williams to outwork him for a UD.
Whoever you favor for this, it's an interesting fight. We don't know how much Winky has left in the tank, and this will be Paul's first fight against a quality MW.
Williams is definately an improved fighter since his loss to Quintana. Carlos exposed some of his flaws, but he's young and humble enough that he took the loss as a learning experience and become a more intelligent boxer. Before he was just a thrower and he way too often gave up his natural advantages in favor of throwing non-stop volumn.
Maybe it's because he's been avoided, but he makes fights with other who are avoided, and it makes him look good. He fought Tony when nobody else would and Winky is almost never anybodies first choice.
This is tough to call. I don't know what to expect from Winky and Williams is still a work in progress. I won't be laying any money on this one.
I think Williams may have officially bitten off more than he can chew. At first I thought Williams would win this, but the more I think about it, the more I like Winky. So long as Winky doesn't look old, Paul will be fighting his most dangerous, hardest-hitting (I know, but it's true) opponent. Williams' only other opponent at 160 was a tomato can. He'll be getting hit with harder shots than Margarito threw from the simple fact that it's 13lbs heavier. I'm not saying Winky can knock him out, I don't, but those harder punches will have more effect. And you have to take into account that Williams likes to throw a lot of punches and he may be discouraged that 90+% may miss or be blocked. As impressive as he's been, Williams still looks very young in his approach. The kid is all guns ablazin', but he's facing an opponent who's a sharpshooter somewhere in the jungle. You got to find him while he's steadily picking you off.
Oops
As of now, I agree with Killface. But, I haven't made up my mind completely.
Winkys been off the radar for so long he's kind of fallen out of the scene.
That's where his "better than thou" attitude took him.
Not too interested in this, but does not seem like a good fight for Williams to take..really not much reward and Winky isnt the kind of fighter to pull in lots of ppv's
I hope WWs inactivity and rust will lose it for him. PW is sitting high and losing to an old bitter winky is not going to help his career..fighting WW does not help anyones career..
The hate for Paul Williams is something I genuinely don't understand. He's never been hyped to the high heavens and he's ALWAYS willing to fight anyone and he's a very fun fighter to watch. I always hear about him being overhyped if anything he is underhyped imo. Really I don't get how people don't like him. He's got a good story, is a nice guy and willing to fight the best at 3 different divisions.
This is tough, Williams has always had problems with southpaws, he's never faced someone with a weapon like Winky has with the jab. Winky is my favorite fighter in the world I'd like to believe he can win this it just depends on what condition he is in and if he can still stand in with the best.
Interesting fight does anyone know where it will be held?
Personally I don't see how anyone could give paul Williams the win here based on his previous performances. Sure, winky has time and a long lay off against him, but seriously - look at the styles.
Paul Williams has all these attributes but when has his reach ever meant anything? Paul, today, fights exactly like JT (a much harder hitter) but with higher volume. Paul drops his lead hand all fight (JT), throws loopy wide punches (JT), flicks his jab (JT) and has a tendency to hit the ropes when pressured (JT).
JT with all his power couldn't break Winkys shell, i dont see pauls slaps doing much either. Paul gets hit WAY too much for him to be picked in this fight IMO, many jabs will land by winky. Winky will have had to have gotten very old over his layoff.
