I've heard a few guys mentioning it but is it necessary: to toughen the skin on your face (especially around your eyes)?

What? Toughen your skin or make you go on about old fashioned training ideas such as toughening your skin to make you better at boxing?
I don't think so. What's important is seeing the punches coming, having a good awareness of what your opponent is doing and responding appropriately (Defense). You're going to get hit sooner or later, but it's better if you can see the punches. Learn how to roll with the punches so that you don't take a punch flush. Vaseline helps.
Anyways I read this while back:
Famous boxing figure Charley Rose explained the art of in-fighting practiced in the gyms on a daily basis in the early 1910’s. “Fighters back then fought two and three times a week and couldn’t afford to get busted up. So every day they practiced how to fight on the inside – how to move in and out of clinches.” He stated, “Every fighter was taught how to edge their left or front foot towards the right, or edge their right foot forward and over to the left, while simultaneously sloping their head towards the right or left so that if the two fighters hit heads, they would come in contact with the side of the skull from the ear up which is pretty solid. Even if the skin did break, it wouldn’t affect anything as vital as eyesight. Every fighter practiced these maneuvers in the gym daily until it became habit.” This practice led to better defensive fighters that were less likely to get cut.
What do you think?
If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.

I've always found L'Oreal's Menexpert Pure and Matte to be quite good... for my repressed metrosexual needs anyway!
I don't know about it as far any of this boxing stuff, it sounds a bit rough!
Arnica is great stuff, used the cream on black eyes or if I've had a rough night, I used to take it in capsules when I broke my calivcle, but I was 10 years old, so I wouldn't really know if it did anything for that.
