    Default 8.8 Earthquake in Chile

8.8 Holy shit. That's massive. The earthquake in Haiti was a 7.0 and this one was a THOUSAND times more powerful than that one. Apparently 78 reported dead but I'm sure that will go up. Also there are tsunami warnings cause hit near the coast

It doesn't seem like there are a lot of reports coming out but cnn's got an article

Pacific under tsunami threat after massive 8.8 quake strikes Chile - CNN.com

For some reason Chile's always been high on my list of places I wanted to go. That is a giant earthquake though.

Get ready for some more too .

San Francisco is one place I wouldnt like to live in.

Think there will be some large volcanic eruptions in the next year or so as well.

That is fucking huge. Looking at the video on CNN, it doesn't look like the damage is nearly as bad or as widespread as in Haiti. I'd imagine that has to do with the depth/location of the quake and the fact that Chilean buildings are probably much more solidly constructed.

Scary stuff though, they've been telling us that we're all going to get killing in some cataclysmic quake here since I was a kid. I just hope it waits a year or two longer so I can finish school and get out of town.

I live in southern California, and it's been well known that everyone is expecting the big one. But northern Cali where Frisco is located is near a fault line which makes it even worse and more deadly.

These massive earthquakes it seems are becoming more commonplace, the huge one in China 2 years ago, the Haiti one, and now this. I'm pretty sure I miss a few ones. I think India had one a few years back also.

That is a mighty big quake, I'm just glad the fatalities seem seem to have been quite low. It would be awful to have another Haiti on our hands so soon after.

The casualties will probably go way up. But Haiti was just so ill equipped to deal with it.

They'll definitely go up, I'd be amazed if the death weren't counted in the thousands (at least), but Chile is much better prepared than Haiti.

And on this jolly news, I'm off to Vancouver to take in some Olympic atmosphere.

No doubt, just early reports so far, but I can't see it being anywhere near as bad in terms of lives lost though.

I don't think it was in such a massively populated area like Haiti. I think the bigger story will be the island nation the tsunami destroys.

No, its not that bad. I was watching the Korean news and misheard the numbers. I thought they said over 200, 000 dead, but obviously its nowhere near that. I need to study more Korean, my second language skills are still pretty sucky.

Preliminary reports are saying 300 died. That is bad, but not as bad as Haiti and is still pretty low.
