Default Montiel Says: "I Hope This Time Donaire Doesn't Back Out"

    By Jhonny Gonzalez

WBC and WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel is ready for the challenge of Nonito Donaire. The fight is tentative for February 19 on HBO. Montiel will have a tuneup against Eduardo Garcia this Saturday in Mexico. He is crossing his fingers that nothing prevents the Donaire fight from moving forward.

"I've tried to fight him for years. I hope this time he doesn't back out. He always agrees to fight and when the time comes, he backs away. I hope this is the final time and it happens," Montiel told David Kaufman. "There is no doubt that Donaire is a world class fighter and I've challenged him for years and, well, it seems that now he might be serious."

Besides Doanire, the unified champion from Mexico is not overlooking this Saturday's opponent. He is not going to allow any possibility of an upset. After the fight with Donaire, Montiel still wants to face IBO champion Vic Darchinyan.

"I do not know much about my opponent, but I will not underestimate him. I have prepared thoroughly because I don't want any surprises. I know that if I come out unscathed on Saturday, 2011 can be one of my best years - because after I beat Donaire - then I'm going to do everything to get a fight with Vic Darchinyan, who also spent years hesitating," Montiel said.

The Great Montiel shares the same concerns Violent D and the public have. He know what Donaire really about

i love it that donaire is trying to convince himself that montiel will have a tough time with him. montiel's been there, done that. he comes to fight and win or lose, he ain't backing down from no midget conqueror.

    lang,

the proof is in the pudding! montiel has a better resume than donaire. montiel has taken bigger chances than donaire. all donaire has on his resume is an upset win over darchinyan. montiel has fought better fighters and even traveled to the philippines to beat up on z gorres. he also beat japan's great hasegawa by ko. can donaire top that?

I agree on all that but i believe we are talking about

Montiel vs. Donairre at 115 that was scheduled in 2009.

Arum who is the promoter of both fighters clearly stated that the schedule fight between Montiel and Donairre is off because Montiel cant make weight and is moving to 118 to face Eric Morel for the WBO title.

The title ( WBO 118 ) would be vacated by Penalosa who himself would climb to face JML.

Donairre has no doing on the fight being canceled which you and TS has stated.

    miron,

okay then. i thought you were trying to say montiel was ducking donaire! look, i'm not saying montiel is going to beat donaire. donaire has special skills and it's going to be very tough for BOTH fighters to come out with the victory. i'm just saying donaire hasn't taken as big as chances as montiel has. granted, that darchinyan victory was epic. i'd like to see donaire get a little big more risky with his opponents. but skills wise, donaire has everything in his arsenal, he's that good!
