Why is crime so high in England?

One of my American friends got off the train in London. A 3 guys jumped high and stole his laptop. He said crime was really high there. I was there in 1982 and had no problems at all. It seemed like a really nice place. What happen?

No jobs no hope and no money, we are bombarded adds for the fine things in life, phones, cars ,
clothes, etc with that little badge everybody want's.!
People today expect so much in life, and some people will steamroll others to get it, very sad fact the

A main theory of mine is people aren't ashamed of leeching off the government anymore. Welfare used to come with a stigma, now it feeds this idea of entitlement.....that wasn't around when people had to bring in crops to feed their families. I work in the probation service and the government will be privatising it in the next 18 months which is to save money. They have released statistics to say crime has gone down but the reality is crime has been diverted to community resolutions by the police. This means less crime, less courts and less people in prison.

Crime is probably worse with the current climate of high unemployment, inflation and cuts to benefits. People get desperate and greedy.
