    Default Cornermen's greatest moments

As much as I like a good fight party, I find myself in the minority when the bell rings. I like to hear the instructions when most people start yapping or breaking for a beer.

Does anyone fancy a quote that you remember to this day from the trainer to motivate their fighter?

    5. Teddy Atlas to Michael Moorer cell phone in his hands and says “Michael, it’s your son. He wants to know why his dad doesn’t want to be champ anymore.”

    4. Roach to James Toney vs Jirov "look JT, you let him outhustle you that round JT you gota put this guy on his ass you hear me JT?"
    Toney: "he did, huh..fuck!"

    3. Angelo Dundee to Ray Leonard vs Hearns final round "Ya blowin it kid, this is where we separate the boys from the men, ya blowin it!

    2. Ritchie Giachetti to Mike Tyson "Mikey...you're lookin for one god-damn shot and its no damn good (He slaps MIke) Mikey you hear me?

    1. Rooney to Tyson- when Tyson complains Bonecrusher is holding him.
"What do you mean he's holding you? I don't wanna hear that, don't give me that. Look I want you bent at the knees back behind a good strong jab...and you make him stop holding you."

...Tyson had yes men for him after that fight...

I'm sure this won't go over well but I don't think Atlas was a great cornerman at all. His theatrics didn't seem to motivate guys, they seemed to distract his fighters and I never saw him make a significant improvement on anyone like Manny Steward did on Lewis, Wlad, Hearns...etc. Roach turned it around for Toney, Manny...etc. Even Buddy Mcgirt made a noticeable improvement on Tarver and Gatti.

I can't think of one fighter Atlas took from no one to champ. Even Moorer was more of a result of Manny Steward's training than Teddy's. I don't like Atlas as a commentator either. Might just be that I'm too critical of the guy.

    My favorite cornerman performances:
    1) Manny Steward literally slapping Lennox and screaming for him to "get this MFer out of there!!!" prior to the 8th round vs Tyson.
    2) Bouie Fisher calmly reminding Bernard to be like "Raindrops" vs Tito.
    3) Roach telling Toney to put Jirov on his ass
    4) brother Naz in pretty much any fight. Great trainer.
    5) Floyd sr./Roger in various fights when they realize It's that time and tell Floyd to "knock this mother f'n bum out"

All my favs have been posted.

The guy in Erik Morales' corner who says to him "let me put some water on your balls" before pulling his shorts out and spraying his nuts with a water bottle was funny.

The great Lou Duva pleading with Golota not to quit vs Tyson and his complete disgust at Golota when he realized his fighter had no heart was also pretty funny.

Last one was Al Certo. Golota tried to stiff him on his check for calling Golota a b*tch for quitting. Certo tried to manually force the mouth piece back into Golota's mouth and make him fight.
They want your @$$ beat because upsets make news. News brings about excitement, excitement brings about ratings. The objective is to bring you up to the tower and tear your @$$ down. And if you don't believe that, you're crazy.

Not great in the motivational sense but great in the comical,
Gaeton Hart wanders to the corner after rd 1 and says something like damn this guy is nailing me.

His trainer Pierre Gobeil responds : "don't be silly he's not even touching you"
Gaeton replies, "well then keep your eye on the ref because someone is hitting me"

Lol Gaeton Hart vs Aaron Pryor 1980

    Or

Papa Mosley in the Shane/Winky fight when Shane needed a corner the most. "Hey son do that Roy Jones thing, remember?"

"Just keep boppin' in there" - Angelo Dundee to George Foreman

“That man is stealing your house, taking the shutters off.” - Angelo Dundee to Johnny Holman who ended up stopping Ezzard Charles in that fight. All "Big Jawn" ever wanted was a house with shutters on it and so Angie used that to motivate him.

Corner men moments that I remember fondly are Pepe Correra with Lennox against McCall, his tactics at the end round one go knock him out.

I also think Steward was on Lennox’s case against Tyson because he knew Mike was shot and still Lennox was being overly cautious.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.

classical lines on this thread. Makes me wanna watch a few of the oldies just to hear the cornermen-
& Atlas was always a theatrical clown with no advice.- no argument from me.

well then keep your eye on the ref because someone is hitting me<<-- friggin classical !!

Read this awhile back and couldn't find who said it. Copied it as is:

The following conversation was heard during an amateur boxing match in the 1940s between a boxer who wanted to give up and his trainer trying to dissuade him from doing so.

    Boxer: Throw in the towel.
    Trainer: There's no towel.
    Boxer: Throw in the sponge.
    Trainer: There's no sponge.
Boxer: Then throw in the f*ing bucket!
