    Default Tim Witherspoon ~ 'He Could Have Been One Of The Best'

    'Terrible' Tim Witherspoon

    A fantastic fighter when he wanted to be. He could have been one
    the best Heavyweights, if he wanted to.

    Discipline. Agree with your statement and think desire/discipline held him back. Guy could fight, but also had quite a set of moobs

    Yeah he was good but his best effort was basically an edged out win over Larry Holmes (which he got robbed for).

    Apart from that he beat some good fighters in Tubbs and Bruno etc but nothing particularly stellar or dangerous.

    Holmes subsequently got decisioned by Spinks and both Spinks and Holmes got destroyed by Tyson.

    I think Tyson or later on, Lennox would have always banged Tim out.

    Tim should have faced Tyson if he did not get blitzed by Bonecrusher who he had already beaten before. It would have been a more entertaining fight.

    I think we can finally agree on something.

    Tim would have made a much better opponent for Tyson than the statuesque Smith.

    The 2nd Smith fight was one in which Tim just wasn't even there for. Witherspoon should easily beat Smith but unfortunately it's his duty to show up in form on the night as a prize fighter.

    Ray Mercer is another one who could've been great but lacked discipline/desire. I had him winning his war vs Lewis, he gave Evander an extremely hard fight and scored one of the most vicious knockouts in history vs Morrison. He took Holmes n Ferguson lightly and looked horrible and confused in those fights. He was better than that n shouldve been one of the top names of that era.

    He WAS one of the top names of that era!

    He was never a technically good HW. But he WAS big and strong and very tough.

    I gave Mercer the Lewis and Holyfield wins... but he had himself to blame with lacklustre performances with Holmes and Ferguson- two guys he should have beat. Holmes embarrassed him.
    Bigger man George, bigger punch!

    It was possibly the strongest era of HW boxing.

    Saturday ~ April 11, 1981

    Concord Hotel ~ Kiamesha Lake, New York

    "Main Event" > Greg Page vs. Marty Monroe

    'Main Undercard'

    Tim Witherspoon ~ 8-0-0 {6 KO's} ~ {Age; 23 years, 4 months}
    vs.
    Dave 'Big Foot' Johnson ~ 13-7-0 {6 KO's} ~ {Age; 22 years, 11 months}
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Over the last 2-Weeks in upstate New York, Tim had been a sparring-partner
    for Greg Page, helping him get ready for Marty Monroe.

    The 'Witherspoon Camp' claimed that after a few sessions, Greg Page wanted
    no more of 'Terrible Tim'.

    Greg Page claimed that Tim was no more than a lunging puncher, and he was
    a 'low-level' boxer.

    Greg Page >
    "Tim can't box worth a lick. And he lunges when he punches. He's all-right for
    a sparring-partner, but he's nothing special."
