The head butt earlier contributed to the knock down. Shane had a sold chin.

I thought this was a joke at first due to all the hypothetical matchups floating around. I now know that it wasn't.

Duran is taken from the ring in cuffs AND CHARGED WITH MURDER

Who did Duran KO at welter?

Whereas Mayorga was hit on the chin flush plenty of times by a who's who of the biggest punchers of the 2000's. Often free shots.

When he gave a shit he could take 12 rounds of it without flinching in the Forrest rematch.

How many other welter/middles could afford to offer and take 3 consecutive left hooks off of Trinidad and immediately chase and knock Trididad down?

He'd have had a hell of a time. Forrest was a bad motherfucker.
Mayorga walked through Forrest so would Duran.
Boxing match doesn't always add up like that though, styles make fights and I think Duran has a tough time with Vernon Forrest.

I think the aura and myth around Duran has far surpassed his ability, and I say that as a Duran fan. Duran was great, but people look at him as this unstoppable killing machine that he really wasn't. He was a murderous LW but was never a big puncher at WW or above, we saw him get outclassed in numerous fights and even drop fights to much lesser opposition than Vernon Forrest (Sims, Laing).

I don't think it matters who he ko'd at 147. He was only there for a short time but you have to take a lot more into this hypothetical then a ko % at welter. Its crazy to even think that the same crude wild swinging bull dog that intimidated Viper would somehow beat the Duran that beat Leonard.

Not only did Mayorga lead with his face but he would have thought he was fighting a flash mob. The accumulation of pin point punches over the course of the fight would have put Mayorga in a coma. If he woke up, he would speak of the dreams he had of being gang raped by a school of piranha.

Ross I just don't see him getting through this off his back. Even if he had Galivans chin.

Mayorga is one of the toughest men you will ever find. He never quit (no mas) and took his beatings like a man.

It would be an awesome fight but. Mayorga at his best was like trying to fight a shark off. He threw everything at full pelt and could unload all night without tiring. Could Duran hit hard enough to slow him down?

One of the only men to have Mosley on wobbly legs couldn't hurt him, even with free, clean shots

Yeah I really don't see Duran stopping him. It's possible late but I think it would be very, very unlikely.

    No ex lightweight hurts Mayorga!

Its such a shame Mayorgas brief time at the top of welter didnt coincide with Pacquiao and Mayweather.

    Do you know what?

If it did, neither moves up until Mayorga does. He was an animal.

De La Hoya was an ex lightweight

What did Mayorga ever do to make you think he wouldn't get stopped? The only dangerous guy he ever even saw the distance against was Forrest! He was an animal but that's about exactly all he was. If this is the best Duran that ever fought at 147, over 15 rounds in his home country in a grudge match? Mayorga has no chance of not getting messed up, the ref or his corner would have to stop it if it didn't come clean, but either way.

    Ok...

Mayorga was the undisputed Welter weight champion! How is that not elite

How would Duran have done against Forrest?
Mayorga doesn't get into most anyone's top ten lists for his era and n other into the top 100 so I say that keeps him out of being labeled an elite. He was a great fighter not a great boxer. His biggest asset was his heart, followed by his power. His best win arguably was against forest some will say mosley. He was no match for Duran. Duran against forest I imagine he'd have a hard time but eventually ko forest unless forest decided he needed to stay outside and run to survive.
