    Default thinking of coming back

im 34 now but being pressured by trainers, managers, promoters to fight again on there cards.i was 6-0 as a pro before calling quits cause of the death of my trainer. but its been almost 10yrs since being in the ring.now im really thinking hard about this cause ive fought guys like oba carr, vernon forest, ronald wright also defeated mike 'the hammer' griffith.what do ya think maybe one more shot, hard to walk away after 20yrs in the game

    Royce - I am 37.

I had 56 amateur fights - started in the Kronk in Detroit, trained by the great Emanuel Steward. Regularly sparred in the gym with Tommy Hearns, Milton MCrory, Oba Carr etc. My final record was 56-0!

5 Detroit Golden Gloves titles, 2 Chicago Golden Gloves, 8 British Schoolboys titles - all at welterweight.

I had my last bout when I was 23, and then stopped because I got a job and could not put in the 6 hours of training per day, for 3 months before every tournament.

Boxing was the thing I was best at, and I miss it terribly every day.

BUT I WILL NOT COME BACK because there is no way I can recapture my youth and I will end up taking punishment from mediocre fighters who I could not have touched me in my prime. My pride at my excellent record and achievements will stop me from making a fool of myself now.

Don't do it! Just say NO.

No. when I was a junior in the States, I had never really heard of the Commonwealth and neither had anyone in my gym. By the time that I was probably at an age or level to think about the Olympics (which was about 20, I suppose), my family moved to England and nobody had heard of me in the UK.

I started again at the bottom if you like when I came to the UK (if I'm honest, the bouts I was in later in my amateur career were lower quality/level than the ones at the beginning) I was lazy and vain enough to prefer being a bigger fish in a small pond rather than really trying to extend myself. I don't really regeret it as I had great fun and have accepted that I was never truly good enough to become a pro world champ or anything.

I had great fun and would do it all over - BUT still would not come back and compete at age 37 (I have gone back to a local gym and just worked out and done some really light sparring, though)

That's not very nice!! Perhaps I should change my avatar comment (!)

I hope I have not confused anyone - I didn't fight Winky Wright at any point in my career?

My dad was a civil engineer so we travelled around a lot. he used to get contracts in places for between 3 to 5 years, to work on road and bridge building projects. Before we lived in Detroit, we spent time in Tanzania in East Africa and also Kuwait in the Middle East.

The Detroit stuff was junior golden gloves, of course - although I did have the honour of getting properly bashed up in the gym by the (then) elite of the Kronk!!

My point remains to Royce, who started this thread, that he should not succumb to temptation and should stay retired, assuming he is telling the truth (why on earth should someone post something on an anonymous forum that is untrue about themselves - we don't even know people's real names here, so I can't see the point on making stuff up, surely.)

I too, was once an undefeated Amatuer fighter with 32 fights, a 4 time Golden Glove champion in the state of New York. I had amatuer wins over Demarcus Corley, and a draw with Kosta Tszyu.. I was thought to be a shoe in for the gold medal in 96. One night, only weeks before I was to compete for the gold, I was in what should have been a minor car accident. My cousin, who was driving, hit a fire hydrant, causing the passenger door to rap around my right leg and fracture my ankle severly in 3 places . I saw 5 specialists, 4 of which told me I should not consider continuing a boxing career.. For months, I was unable to train, and required crutches to walk. When I finally gained my strength back in the leg, I took to the gym, trying to recuperate, so I could one day continue with boxing and embark upon my pro career. Then,

    I woke up.
