Default Floyd fights: "Hype vs. Results"

As we get ready for the Floyd-Berto fight, it occurs to me that if there was such a thing as "negative hype", this fight would be among the top in that category. Everyone (including me) is brushing it off as just another less than deserving opponent for Floyd, and are giving Berto little to no chance. What actually transpires is yet to be seen. But it brings to mind... what other fights has Floyd had as of late... and how does the pre-fight hype compare with the actual fight results? I like numbers, so I've rated both the pre-fight hype and the fight results on a scale from 1-10 for some Floyd fights of recent years. Ten of course being the highest score. They would look something like this:

    Floyd-JMM (2009): Hype - 7, Results - 3

The hype was tempered a bit due to the weight jump by JMM, but was still there. The result was considerably less than the hype, with Floyd giving JMM a comprehensive boxing lesson.

    Floyd-Mosley (2010): Hype - 8, Results - 4

Most fans had always wanted to see Floyd vs. Shane, so I rate the hype a bit higher. But other than that 2nd round right hand, Shane did absolutely nothing, and looked old doing it.

    Floyd-Cotto (2012): Hype - 7, Results - 9

The fight was very much hyped, but Floyd was the clear favorite. Miguel turned in a performance, albeit in a losing cause, that few expected. Floyd called it his toughest fight in years. The fight itself was competitive, action-filled, and forced Floyd to go to the offensive to hold off Cotto. Welcome show of offense by Floyd. The results exceeded expectations.

    Floyd-Guerrero (2013): Hype - 5, Results - 5

Not much was expected of Guerrero except an honest night's work, and the fight went pretty much according to the script.

    Floyd-Canelo (2013): Hype - 9, Results - 3

Before Pac, the worst gap from hype to results. The fight was hyped as the fight of the century, but it became painfully clear that Canelo had no business in the ring with Floyd.

    Floyd-Maidana I-II (2014): Hype - 6, Results - 9

Along with Cotto, the only Floyd opponent who did better than expected, and whose effort exceeded the pre-fight hype.

    Floyd-Pac (2015): Hype - 10, Results - 4

Along with Floyd-Canelo, the worst disappointment for a Floyd fight yet. Classic case of the expectations being set way too high for a fight that really should have happened years ago. Pacquiao totally underwhelmed, regardless of Floyd's style and tactics.

    Floyd-Berto (2015): Hype - 3, Results - ??

Yes. Floyd is much much better than his peers.
Even as he moves up in weight.
Even as he fights larger men.
Even as he fights younger men.
    Even in rematches.
    Even as he ages.

So in conclusion...... according to my expert number-crunching, Cotto and Maidana were the only ones who outdid the pre-fight hype..... and Canelo and Pac were the worst "crash-and-burn" victims as compared to their pre-fight hype.

    Floyd-Ortiz (2011): Hype - 5, Results - 7

I'm one of those people who believe that controversy is actually good for boxing. The way the fight ended even if it was deemed as unsportsmanlike by people, made it worthwhile. The post-fight interview was icing on the cake.

The Berto fight will exceed the hype-as there is none.

I thought Mosley was still in prime. He just got out boxed, thoroughly. Floyd's regular HBO fights were better than any of his PPV. Corrales & Corley my fav Floyd fights.

I was off my seat when Mosely landed those right hands in the second and wobbled Floyd. I have to give Floyd credit for the next 10 rounds where he was flawless.

Humble yourself Rockman. I think we all give props to Floyd in the ring. I really thought he would be more on the offense tonight but he truly is a thing of beauty to watch. He takes the best fighters of the day and makes them look like shit. It's like when you are watching a great picture ( American baseball) locked in and painting the the corners. Good night of boxing for me. Floyd can suck the drama out of a fight but we all know his style going into it. I do hate him running around the ring at the end. I always thought he should put in the work and finish with an exclamation point. Liked his uppercut tonight, didn't enjoy that beautiful jab I like to see more often. Berto was a poor choice, that's not Floyd hating, just a fact. Still, he is 49-0. Can't not give the guy props. Now @ruthless rocco as a Floyd sack licker, do you really think this is his last fight. I just can't see him not going for 50. I will be amazed but he did seem sincere. Did anyone else notice all the track marks on Floyd's arm, what the hell is he shooting. I thought roids were IM not IV. The poor guys arms look like he's been a junky for years.
