Larry Holmes: "Mike Tyson hit very sharp and very fast, but he didn't have tremendous power. He put me down 3 times, but I was 38 years old and trained only 2-3 weeks for the fight. He didn't hit anywhere near as hard as Earnie Shavers. Earnie Shavers hit harder than anyone I ever fought, and that includes Mike Tyson, Gerry Cooney, Witherspoon, Mike Weaver. WHEN EARNIE SHAVERS HIT ME AND KNOCKED ME DOWN, IT WAS LIKE THEM OLD-TIME FLASH CAMERAS,--- POP!!! --- I JUST SAW THIS WHITE FLASH and the next thing I know the ref was saying "5.......6.......! "Earnie Shavers...that's the hardest I ever been hit."

Muhammad Ali: "George Foreman was a powerful puncher no doubt. He hurt me once in Zaire to the heart, it was in the second round I think. But I would have to say that The Acorn hit me harder than I was ever hit before, and I fought a lot of heavy hitters---Ron Lyle, Foreman, Frazier, Sonny Liston. "EARNIE SHAVERS, WHEW! That was the hardest I ever got hit."
    -Muhammad Ali

"Earnie Shavers, he's the hardest puncher I ever faced, and that's including George Foreman. I ain't never been hit like that."

You cant debate this kind of shit Brock. Well you can but I'm done really. These daily crucifixions of all time greats and misrepresentation of what people even say about them is simply over the top. I'll simply spend less time here is all. Last week it felt like this was Earnie Shavers.com....the dark side.
These dipshits cant even come to grips with giving a puncher credit for being a puncher. Its beyond addressing anymore. So now I simply don't read a thing they say or respond. Its really quite liberating even though I rarely responded to begin with. These are the same people that a few centuries ago insisted the world was flat.

Ps-I only responded here because you were the author. So I wont be back to this thread either.

And remember that famous saying often credited to Mr.Twain, "never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience"

    Peace

I feel guilty when I see these golden age guys get so upset when someone actually bothers to question their heroes. Maybe we should just all shut up and let grampa ramble on about how his generation was the greatest

    @IamInuit is in despair.

The very same internet he now uses to spread the gospel about his past heroes is the very same internet that enabled the masses to see the fights and check the records for themselves and expose his past heroes.

What a dilemma, double edged sword

    FINALLY!

Shavers takes on a decent opponent!

No wonder he wasn't the favourite!

    'Lesson for the Day'

Earnie Shavers had a record of 29-2-0 with {29 KO's}.

Amazingly, Earnie had only been campaigning as a Professional for
    22-Months.

It was an 'Earn While You Learn' campaign. Lots of bouts for small money.

Promoter/Manager {Dean Chance} had shipped Earnie out to Los Angeles
in May 1971 to train with Jerry Quarry.

Then, Earnie would travel into Nevada to have his monthly 'small venue' bouts there.

Yes, I don't have any particular problem with this method of development.

Building up your record and experience through frequent and prolific bum beating has significant merit, just ask Deontay. If it works it works.

But we don't credit Wilder for all the cans he's whacked out do we!

Anyway it's nice to see Earnie step it up here against a respectable opponent, well done Earnie lol

    Max, Max

Larry 'Irish Pat' Duncan was the local favorite, because he was based
    out of Carson City, Nevada.

    He was 'not' the Betting-Favorite.

'Irish Pat' with a record of 19-3-1 {15 KO's}, would be Earnie's toughest
    opponent to date.

The 22 1/2 year-old was soild at {203 lbs.}, and could rip off combinations
    fairly quick.

    Pre-Fight Chatter

If Pat Duncan can get thru the 4th Round, he will make it a fight. Earnie tends
to run out of steam early, as he puts everything he has into every punch.

Duncan's chin will most likely be tested, and he may get battered here. Earnie
might not drop Pat, but he will definitely bust him up in the early going.

If Pat can hang on and take the early onslaught, he just might catch an exhausted
Shavers late, and take him out.

You don't have to wait too long. I watched Shavers /Cobb this morning and Shavers was gasping for air after round 1.

    The Bout

    Round 1

This time, Earnie took it easy in the 'Opening Round', and was not Hell-Bent
on trying to take out 'Irish Pat' in the 1st-Round.

Earnie was both patient and cautious, as Duncan had decent hand-speed.

The action in the 1st-Round was 'even', as both Heavyweights were looking
to counter while looking for an opening.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Round 2

    In Round 2, Earnie {208 lbs.} used his strength to get in a bit closer, as Pat {203 lbs.}
    was on the defensive side.

Earnie clubbed in a few right-hands as Pat moved backwards during the first-half
    of the session.

But, as Earnie moved in at the {1:45 Mark}, Pat fired off quick 'left-right'
    combinations to stall Earnie's attack.

Pat was more effective over the last minute of Round 2, as he was faster than Earnie.

Earnie tried for the Home-Run near the end of the Round, and just missed Pat's chin
    with a whistling right-hand.

Default Norton/Frazier/Tex Cobb all said Earnie Shavers "hardest puncher"

Randall “Tex” Cobb certified Shavers as one of the hardest punchers ever. "Shavers hit me so hard I never knew what round it was."
Tex Cobb: "Nobody hits like Shavers. If anybody hit harder than Shavers, I'd shoot him. Earnie Shavers could punch you in the neck and break your ankle."

Ken Norton: "George Foreman could hurt a fighter with clubbing punches. He just caught me, it was my mistake, I was careless. On the other hand Earnie could put your lights out like nobody else. Definitely Earnie hit harder than Foreman."

Joe Frazier: "Earnie asked me to fight him. I told him point blank, ‘No way, Earnie. Hey, you hit too damn hard.’
