I don't agree that he would have gone AWOL.
In his time, Mayweather was far and away the biggest star in boxing PPV views. The vast majority of the buyers are American, and Mayweather was the stand out US fighter in an era dominated by other nationalities.
As the biggest (and only) star, he could fight who he wanted, and the public would buy it.
If Hearns and Leonard were around, he couldn't do that. In fact, Leonard would be the star attraction and could pick terms against Mayweather. Hearns would be a truly dangerous opponent for Mayweather and would probably be his equal in star power.
I do think Floyd was a fighter at heart, and don't agree he would have gone AWOL. He would have had to fight those guys - at lesser pay - to prove his greatness as a fighter.
i have no reason to think that he wouldn't have fought them if he had to, but I'm not convinced he would remain undefeated.
If God wanted us to be vegetarians, why are animals made of meat ?
