Only the truly great champions must have 3 things.
    1. chin
    2. Heart
    3. Stamina
Ali had all the above. Plus a ring I.Q. that was off the charts. Tyson tells it better than I can.

Going by the Patterson fight (65 opponent)... Patterson looks terrible, he can't move his feet, doesn't know how to cut off the ring, has no jab and basically stands on the spot, bobs and weaves, then launches a telegraphed swing.

Ali has a crisp, constantly flicking point scorer jab and very good flowing foot work, terrific feints and a fast right hand, although not much pop. For some reason, even though Patterson is standing in the same place all the time, Ali totally neglects his body. In this modern day era he would have been roundly criticised for not finishing a beaten, overmatched opponent earlier. No HBO contracts after Lampey and Max have finished with him.

Patterson is the size of a post weigh-in modern light-heavy, however, Ali's dimensions all but make him a perfect fit for the modern day Cruiser division - Usyk, Gassiev, Dorticos, Briedis, etc. Great fights.

In my opinion Ali should be favored over anyone who ever fought, and is the greatest heavyweight of all time. That being said, styles make fights and even the Great Ali of 65 could have an off night, so with that in mind I give the following fighters an almost even chance of scoring the upset:
    1. Larry Holmes: Battle of great jabs, master boxers, and genius level boxing IQs. Difficult to picture this one because Larry became who he was through sparring Ali, but this all pure fantasy anyways. I think prime vs prime, best night vs best night, this would be Ali's toughest test.
    2. Joe Frazier: Joe had a difficult style for Ali, and had a "thing" against him. Much like Ken Norton, this style would always trouble Ali.
Ken Norton: similar to Frazier, Norton was a volume guy who excelled vs boxers while struggling with punchers.
    3. Riddick Bowe: Say what you will about big daddy, but he was a huge, complete fighter the night he beat Evander the first time. This versions jab, size, inside fighting, and power may have been more of a threat than Holmes'...
    4. Wlad Klitschko: Pure size disadvantage and bad style match up. I think Ali would have worn him down, especially his prime version, but that jab and fluid boxing mixed with freakish size could've thrown him off his game enough to allow the upset.

Clay was the best of his era , that's it.
In many ways that's all anyone can ask of you , however people have grown stronger / faster / bigger in all sports. Boxing isn't any different .

Through the night i've just watched about 20 rounds of Ali in the mid 60s and 10 rounds in the 70s. Now even allowing for the inferior opposition in the 60s, he is by far a better/sharper fighter in the 60s than in the 70s.

Not sure he beats the modern great giants (Wlad) but if Haye and Byrd can take Wlad the distance Ali would certainly not be out of his depth.

65 Ali against 90 Holyfield would have been fascinating.

I’m a huge Holyfield fan, but for me I think Ali is horrible style-wise for Evander. I think Evander excels vs aggressive punchers like Foreman, Tyson...etc., but struggles with faster fighters who won’t engage like Byrd, Larry Donald...etc. I know the two fights I mentioned took place later in his career, but I can’t recall Evander ever looking at his best against speedy, defensively minded boxers. This is one disagreement I would be happy to lose though, as I hold Evander in very high regard.

Amazing to think about 1990 Evander Holyfield against 1965 Muhammad Ali

I'd say Ali 1965 is pretty much unbeatable, super fast hand & footwork and that nasty killer instinct was at it's peak plus he was by no means a tiny heavyweight either.
1965 was only a year before he put on the best "clinic" i have ever seen from a Heavyweight in what is widely acknowledged as his best performance.
Ali was on FIRE against Williams.

I could watch this all day long - Electrifying

Anything is possible and there are always styles matchups which create problems for fighters. I remember on another message board I would get crucified for ever saying that sugar ray Robinson would lose because of a style matchup.

Anyways, I think he is the best HW ever and would beat most everyone during his prime. I think like Mikeod said, Bowe I think has the best chance. If Bowe is focused, he is bigger and is quick. I think he would keep Ali guessing. Lewis would also give him troubles because of the height. I think both Klits get destroyed by Ali despite their size advantage.

If Jones Jr can come in lite and pick up a trinket, 65' Ali cruises it. He clowns Wilder.

Pomp Roy weighing around 195 against Ali would have been a fascinating style matchup.
