Default Detroit fighters under-noted in the game!

While we tend to highlight fighters in America from Philadelphia, and even now from Vegas. As well as fighters from New York and California, Boston and now even Texas we tend to not elevate fighters from Detroit and the surrounding area.

When we have more than a laundry list of history making notables from Detroit, Michigan, as well as some good talented contenders we tend to mention as an aside to the overall fight game and never promote how fertile Detroit is for fighters and beneficial it is to the fight game!

Tommy Hearns and Emmanuel Steward from Kronk are obvious starters. But while Michael Moorer was not Detroit native, he was trained at Kronk in Detroit.

We also have the important and notable Royalty in the Byrd family- Chrys Byrd, Prentiss Byrd and the entire Byrd clan and side associates who have made incredible contributions to boxing!

We also have the Mayweather family, who have since moved on from Detroit but their roots are deep in Detroit obviously.

Then we have contenders like Dereick Jefferson and a a host of other fighters to now the ONLY fighter hailing from Detroit to be a Champion is Tony Harrison who just beat one of those Charlo brothers.

The Mayweathers have no connection to Detroit. They are from Grand Rapids Michigan, the opposite side of the State. Closer would be James Toney from Ann Arbor Michigan which is a stones throw from Detroit.

One should always mention Joe Louis when speaking of Detroit fighters. He was born in Alabama but moved to Detroit at 12 and later began boxing in Detroit.

And of course Sugar Ray Robinson who was born in Georgia but moved to Detroit as a youth and began boxing there. SRR actually lived on the exact same block as Louis if you can believe that.

Thanks on the Mayweather correction. I went between Detroit and Michigan.

De Gale seemed to have derailed one of them.

Andre direl derailed himself with that bizzare flop against Abraham imo. Maybe he was hurt in general before that, and it clearly was an illegal punch, but he sold it and then basically didn’t fight for a few years.

Good sell job faking concussion symptoms for months, spending 10s of thousands on doctors. Most fake for seconds. You have to appreciate his commitment to faking, which also cost him 100s of thousands in earnings. Sure he and his family are far worse off but....the prestige. We’re all waiting with baited breathe for the prestige.

Fair enough. I havent watched the fight since it was current, if he was concussed it was from damage he took earlier in and throughout the fight and likely would have kept him out that long had Abraham not thrown the cheap shot. The ending itself he sold. If he had just stayed kneeling and got the DQ it would have looked better as the result was fine, just the fake reaction stuck with me.
