Ringside Boxing Report: David Haye - Lasse Johansen

By Don Caputo March 27th, 2006 All Ringside Boxing

Making the first defence of his EBU Cruiserweight crown, Bermondsey’s David Haye delighted a capacity crowd inside the atmospheric York Hall with a gruelling eighth round stoppage of amateur rival Lasse Johansen. Headlining the Maloney Promotions bill, Haye saw his early thunder bounce off the concrete features of an impossibly sturdy challenger before a furious flurry of leather ended matters suddenly and spectacularly.

Dragged beyond the fifth round for the first time in a career jam-packed with glittering knockouts, the freakishly powerful Haye huffed and puffed but still had enough to blow his man down – eventually. With his shock loss to Carl Thompson still daisy fresh in our minds, more than a few breaths were held in the roaring partisan crowd when the lanky challenger slapped the champion across the face with a scornful smile after withstanding his best offerings. It was a look that carried more weight than any punch he’d thrown to that point, and seemed to knock Haye back on his heels. More...

Boxing Press Conference: Bernard Hopkins - Antonio Tarver

By Joe Ulrey March 24th, 2006 All Boxing Previews
It was a fabulous day in Southern California. It was a great day for the beautiful people to come out for the press conference promoting the upcoming fight between two of boxings finest, Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver

Hopkins entered the conference room at Hollywood Park's Turf Club first. He was "dressed to the nines" in a brown business suit and appears to be in great shape. After a few minutes of Hopkins posing for the cameras, Antonio Tarver entered the room. Not to be outdone, Mr Tarver could have been on the cover of GQ instead of promoting the upcoming fight. The two men immediately engaged in a "staredown" that lasted for probably 60 seconds but seemed like a lot longer.

After the promoters spoke, Hazim Richardson took the podium. He is Bernard's chief trainer. He spoke about the things we all know about Hopkins. He is one of the most disciplined athletes ever to lace on a pair of gloves. He talked about Hopkins beating Trinidad on a Saturday and calling him immediately Monday morning to resume training in the gym. The Hopkins camp has hired Shane Mosley's trainer for expertise in fighting left handers. More...

Boxing Press Conference: David Haye - Lasse Johanesen

EBU champion David Haye and Lasse Johanesen today spelt out their intentions in the final press conference before their European Cruiserweight title fight in York Hall this Friday (24 March), while manager Frank Maloney insisted the fight will go ahead, blaming boxing’s “undercurrents of very jealous people” for the “unfounded” rumours of cancellation.

Maloney remained tight-lipped over who exactly he thought might be attempting to disrupt the fight saying only; “we have our opinion [on who it might be].”

Haye’s last five fights have all been won within 3 rounds and he hopes Johansen will be a step up in class that Haye feels he needs. He said: “I’m not expecting to hit him with one shot and for him to go over. I’m positive he thinks he can come and beat me which is exactly what we need, some tough opponents that can come give 100%.”

His training sessions in Miami with Lennox Lewis are expected to pay dividends, Haye continued: “You might be a little bit surprised but you’ll see on Friday night, it will be explosive, that’s one thing you can guarantee with me, I bring excitement and explosive power and its going to be a good entertaining fight. I’ve had real good sparring partners, Lennox has been very important in my training he’s brought a lot of experience.” More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Hasim Rahman - James Toney

The stakes were high for everyone involved. Hasim Rahman was on a quest to once again become the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World, James Toney had the chance to become a five weight class champion, promoter Bob Arum and Top Rank laid the foundation to begin reconstruction of a muddled Heavyweight Division,

a move that would undoubtedly make him a player in the division again. The WBC Heavyweight Title was on the line, and the pieces were in place for the prevailing fighter to take on the winner of the upcoming Wladimir Klitschko vs. Chris Byrd match up to bring some sense of sanity to this crazy division. Instead, this fight turned out to contradict all expectations. While many thought this would turn out to be a snoozer, it had many exciting moments and will garner a reasonably high demand for a rematch. Many favored Toney going into the fight, but most fans left Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall in disbelief that the ringside judges scored this bout a draw, saying it was obvious that Rahman was the winner. Undefeated cruiserweight Lasse Johansen will cut a menacing figure at London's historic York Hall this Friday, March 24 when the tall, hammer fisted Dane must wade through a venomous sea of rabid David Haye supporters before he can climb through the ropes to challenge for the European title currently held by "The Haymaker". Having yet to suffer the bitter sting of defeat, Johansen is brimming with confidence that his British excursion will yield impressive results and bring him to the forefront of European boxing at the expense of Haye's burgeoning career. Boxing Analysis: What’s Next For Joe Calzaghe?

By James Oakley March 22nd, 2006 All Boxing Articles

For a man who supposedly just had his career defining fight, Joe Calzaghe now has the chance to make perhaps any fight in the world at super middleweight or light heavyweight,
if he wishes. Fresh off the back of one of the most stunning performances ever to have been witnessed by a terrestrial audience, Calzaghe now faces the challenge of who to fight next. He has had the offer from current IBF Light Heavy Champion Clinton Woods that would no doubt be a thriller if the fight were to be made.

Unfortunately, in the US, where it appears that Calzaghe and his prompter Frank Warren are most keen on impressing, Clinton is only known as the man who lost to the legend Roy Jones Jnr and ex-IBF Champ Glencoffe Johnson. Therefore, a Woods matchup seems unlikely as it won't bring in the dollars that Calzaghe will now be looking for after his recent victory over Jeff Lacy.

Another possible opponent being considered is Roy Jones Junior himself. This would definitely bring the big money Calzaghe will yearn however, it is unlikely this could build upon the legacy he will hope to leave when he retires from boxing as Jones has lost his previous three outings in the ring. Due to this, if a loss was suffered, all Calzaghe's hard work would immediately be undone and therefore it would be a risky fight. More...

Boxing Preview: Chris Byrd - Wladimir Klitschko II

By Michael Jarvis March 21st, 2006 All Boxing Previews

IBF Heavyweight Champion Chris Byrd's first title defense and fight from under Don King's promotional thumb will be a rematch in Germany with Wladimir Klitschko, scheduled to take place on April 22 at the SAP Arena in Mannheim.

This is very curious. One has to wonder what is going on within the mind of Chris Byrd, but in all honesty to focus solely on the lawsuit is old hat and in the end to do so will only detract from Byrd's career and that is an insult to a great boxer. Yes, indeed loyal reader, you heard that right - a great boxer. For those that don't know enough about Chris Byrd, I urge you to actually watch his work the ring. Despite the opinions of television commentators or those of boxing pundits worldwide, Byrd is a fantastic fighter that has fallen prey to some unfortunate incidents and circumstances.

The most unfortunate circumstance of them all may have come from within his own boxing team, i.e., his promoter. Byrd has only had four fights in the last three years and for a professional prize fighter that is disturbing. One wonders how Byrd finds the means to put food on his table, pay trainers and gym fees, along with putting clothes on his family's backs. More...
