Boxing Preview: Juan Urango – Naoufel Ben Rabah

By Jim Marra June 30th, 2006 All Boxing Previews

Tonight in Hollywood, Florida, two junior welterweights will fight for the IBF title which was vacated by Ricky Hatton. As we all know the Jr welterweight division just a few short years ago was was loaded with talent, from Koysta Tszyu, Arturo Gatti, Floyd Mayweather, Miguel C! otto, and Ricky Hatton. Today Tszyu has one foot in retirement and the rest of the former 140 lbs stars have moved up to welterweight. But do not be fooled, the current class at junior welterweight is still thriving with talent.

For one, you still some of the old guard of junior welters who did not make the move up to 147, they are; the top contender Junior Witter, big punching Vivian Harris, as well as two solid veterans in DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corely and Carlos Maussa. Also, the dangerous Mexican fighter Jose Luis Castillo has moved up to junior welter. But there are also some great prospects out there as well, such as Mike Arnauotis, Demetrius Hopkins, and the smooth talking, fast punching Paulie Malignaggi. More...

Former Hot Boxing Prospect Guinn Beaten Again

By Curtis McCormick June 29th, 2006 All Boxing Results

The last two years have been tough for Dominick Guinn, ironically nicknamed "The Southern Disaster", once thought to be one of the best up and comers on the American heavyweight scene. Since March of 2004, Guinn has only seen victory over such bit players as Audley Harrison and Phil Jackson while drawing with journeyman Friday Ahunanya and losing to top men James Toney, Sergei Lyakhovic and Monte Barrett. While Toney and Lyakhovic are or were world champions and Barrett may yet enjoy that same status in the near future, Guinn was thoroughly outclassed last night by well managed Was! hington DC southpaw Tony Thompson at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.

Guinn, 26-4-1 (18), simply couldn't muster any kind of offensive strategy against the taller Thompson, 27-1 (17), as the southpaw used his reach advantage to thoroughly control the Arkansas man. For Thompson, it was a superb win that will likely lead to the type of high profile opportunities that had eluded the 34 year old until this fight. More...

The Top Ten Greatest Ever Slugfests In Boxing History!

By James Slater June 28th, 2006 All Boxing Articles

All boxing fans love a slugfest. This type of fight is guaranteed to get the pulses racing. Sure, we fans respect and appreciate the fine art of boxing - the superb defensive skills of hitting and not being hit - but deep down every fan hopes to see a violent slugfest in the ring. The excitement of such a spectacle, where both fighters take turns in landing the dominant blows, which often results in a knockdown or two, really lets out the passion and fire that every fight fan has inside his chest - in the form of deafening screams and roars of approval. As much as a chess match style boxing encounter may appeal to a boxing fan on a different level, it will not produce the kind of sore throat inducing fervour that a classic slugfest does.

In this article, I give my choice for the ten greatest ever fights of this kind. Fights that were the word excitement defined. In the fights written about here there was nothing but fan satisfaction, at least in terms of action. In other words - slugfests! More...

Boxing Recap: Brock Ibragimov , Julio Quintana

I have to give HBO credit for trying something new so I will let them slide for the boring segment of Boxing after Dark this weekend. Getting undefeated prospects to fight each other is virtually impossible these days and they managed to get two fights like this. In theory it was a very good idea because everyone loves a prospect and two of the fighters on the card were building some serious buzz in the business. Unfortunately in boxing when you get your hopes up you are usually disappointed. The fireworks that were sold turned out to be duds, there weren't any explosive moments in either fight and on top of that, we were forced to once again put up with Fran Charles and his horrible commentary.
