Boxing Perspective: Top Ten Boxing Upsets

By Keith McMenamin August 31st, 2006 All Boxing Articles

On the undercard of the Sam Peter vs. James Toney bout, Eric Aiken, 16-4 (12), is set to make the first defense of his newly acquired IBF Featherweight title against Roberto Guerrero, 18-1-1 (11). Back in May, Aiken pulled off a highly unlikely upset victory over Valdemir Pereira to win the strap. While this accomplishment might pale in comparison to Buster Douglas beating Tyson or George Forman capping off a 10 year hiatus by winning the heavyweight title, most people like when the underdog pulls it out. So in the spirit of JJ Braddock and Iran Barkley, I give to you my 10 biggest and most unlikely upsets over the past 15 years of boxing.

10.) Eddie Sanchez over J.C. Candelo: It was hot August night back in 2004 and it looked like the fight fans were in for a treat as the undefeated prospected Joachim Alcine was set to take on J.C. Candelo, at that time the #5 ranked middleweight by the IBF. Candelo was fresh off of losses to Winky Wright and Kassim Ouma and needed a big performance to stay in the mix. Everything chanced quickly as Alcine failed his medical exam and was not allowed to fight. It looked like the fans were robbed of a good night of boxing. More...

“No Risk, No Reward” Final Boxing Press Conference in LA

By Boxing Press August 31st, 2006 All Press Releases

Unlike previous media gatherings in advance of the September 2nd “NO RISK, NO REWARD” boxing event, today’s final press conference at LA’s Staples Center featured little in the way of the usual banter and personal insults.

Instead, main event heavyweights James “Lights Out” Toney and Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter, and co-featured IBF Featherweight champion Eric “Mighty Mouse” Aiken and his challenger, NABF champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and their trainers brought to today’s media session a “The fun is over, let’s get down to business” approach just three days before their respective showdowns at Staples to be televised on “Showtime Championship More...

Exclusive Boxing Interview: Michael Hunter

By James Slater August 30th, 2006 All Boxing Interviews

Hartlepool, England's Michael Hunter, the reigning European Super Bantamweight
Champion, is one of Britain’s most exciting boxers. His aggressive, come forward style of fighting delights both his loyal fan base - a huge crowd of vocal supporters who follow Michael to each and every fight he has - and a television audience that watch him on Sky Sports. He is quite simply never in a bad fight and in the not too distant future a world title shot will
surely be his.

Currently in training for his next bout, Michael very kindly took time out to talk to SaddoBoxing recently. The following text recounts how the interview went and what the top-ten world rated super bantamweight had to say

SaddoBoxing: I know you are in training at the moment, have you an opponent lined up for your next fight?

Michael Hunter: Well, I won't say until it’s finalised, but there are three possible names lined up. I'm fighting on November the 3rd. But as I say, its down to one of three opponents. More...

Exclusive Boxing Interview: Allan Green

By Jim Marra August 30th, 2006 All Boxing Interviews

"I'm Willing To Fight Anybody At 160-168!"

What has boxing come to when one of the sport's best prospects cannot land a quality fight? This seems to be the case for the Tulsa, Oklahoma native Allan Green, 21-0 (15). It is truly puzzling to me why any of today's top fighters in the super middleweight division will not put their names on the dotted line next to Green's. Of course, there was some talk of Green fighting the 168 pound champion Joe Calzaghe sometime in the fall of this year but Green simply brushed those rumors aside. "He (Calzaghe) wasn't serious. His camp offered us a deal just for the sake of making a offer. Anybody in their right mind wouldn't have taken that deal."

Some boxing pundits would even argue that Green is not ready for Calzaghe at this point in his career. Green would even agree to that assessment to an extent, by confirming that at this moment in time he feels he has yet to reach his full potential but he would certainly not hesitate at the opportunity to fight for a world title. So the question still stands, if Calzaghe is currently out of the picture, then who would Green want to fight? "Peter Manfredo," Green replied. "Because he is known. I'd even fight Jeff Lacy, it doesn't matter to me. I'd go down to 160 and fight Jermain Taylor." More...

Boxing Perspective: Chris Byrd – A Heavy Decision

By Don Caputo August 30th, 2006 All Boxing Articles

The salmon can only leap over the bear so many times before it is finally caught. Before those great big teeth chomp down and devour.

Once upon a time, not so terribly long ago, a courageous fighter by the name of Chris Byrd glided effortlessly over some of the grouchiest grizzlies in the land just like one of his namesakes in the sky. A ghost in boxing trunks. Jackpots at a Las Vegas casino are easier to hit than he was.

For a long while, catching him was like trying to catch Moby Dick. More...
