Big Hopes On "Big Mac"
With two of the biggest and most accomplished names in British boxing right now coming towards the end of their careers, the majority of the British fans seemed to all be looking in the direction of the quick handed, undefeated Olympic Silver Medallist, Amir Khan as the future star of British boxing.
For some time, Joe Calzaghe alone had flown the flag for Brittons on the world scene of boxing before “The pride of Wales ” was joined by Manchester ’s Ricky Hatton with his stoppage of the undisputed light welter king Kostya Tszyu in June, 2005.
Since then, both fighters have firmly established themselves in the pound for pound ratings world wide, with the flawless destruction of Jeff Lacy by Calzaghe and the relentless body punching of Hatton that forced ring legend Joe Louis Castillo to crumble in jut four rounds.
But, as we head into the second half of 2007, both fighters are nearing the end of their careers, Calzaghe wanting just 2-3 more fights, and Hatton’s trainer Billy Graham wanting Ricky to call it a day after his hopefull “Megafight” with pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr; It leaves us all asking who the next star of British boxing will be?
Ever since he turned pro back in 2005, the British fans and experts all had big hopes on Amir Khan as the one to represent and fly the flag for the British on the world scene. They were tipping him for greatness not long after his pro debut, and it seemed the fans were right behind him. More...

Denmark’s Fawaz Nasir failed to capitalize on his careers biggest opportunity to make an instant name for himself on the European super middleweight scene, when he lost a close but fair unanimous decision to undefeated Germany-based Pole Lukas Wilascheck in Düsseldorf Saturday night (July 28). The fight was scored 96-95, 96-94 and 97-94 after ten rounds for the International German championship. Nasir’s record dipped to 11-2 (6), as the defending champion improved his to 18-0 (6).
Nasir came out very strong in the first round, and completely dominated Wilascheck with a lightning quick jab and nice combinations. For the first three rounds, which Nasir surely won on all scorecards, it looked like it would be an easy night for the Dane, as he repeatedly connected with clean and crisp punches. In the third, he pinned Wilascheck against the ropes, and unleashed with several hard shots that made the Spotlight Boxing-fighter glad to hear the bell. More...

Vernon Forrest won a battle of former welterweight champions last night at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington by comprehensively outboxing the determined but outgunned Carlos Baldomir over twelve rounds to annex the vacant WBC Light Middleweight title.
The much shorter Baldomir, 43-11-6 (13), pressed the action for the course of the bout but simply could not match the speed and accuracy of his towering foe.
Forrest employed superb footwork to keep Baldomir at bay and put his reach advantage to good use by countering the Argentine brawler with bracing shots that swept the early rounds.
When Baldomir did manage to get inside, much of his plans to work over his opponent were nullified by Forrest's hard shots and savvy experience. More...

It was a night of furious fisticuffs at the Sindicato de Taxistas in Cancun, Mexico last night as reigning WBC Light Flyweight titlist Edgar Sosa went to grips with fiery Argentine challenger Luis Alberto Lazarte for a scheduled 12 round championship bout.
Sosa, fresh off a majority decision win over Brian Viloria in April to take the vacant WBC crown, had his hands full from the start with the challenger.
Lazarte came in riding a 17 bout win streak from a three year campaign in his homeland and at 36 years of age, could have seen this opportunity as his last chance at major world title glory.
The challenger went straight at Sosa and won the early rounds before beginning to slow down to a pace more suited to the champion. More...

There was a great deal of action this past Friday, with a few former world champions back in the ring as well as many domestic and regional title fights taking place.
We start off at the Isleta Casino Resort in Albuquerque, New Mexico where ex-WBA Super Flyweight Champion Martin Castillo ran his record to 37-2 (17) with a dominating 12 round unanimous decision win over durable former WBO Latino Bantamweight titlist Oscar Andrade, 36-28 (18). A rematch with former victim and current WBA titleholder Alexander Munoz could be in the works for Castillo should Munoz retain his crown against Kuniyuki Aizawa in Tokyo this September.
At City Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, hot welter prospect Andre Berto, 19-0 (16), was given a tough exam by rangy Mexican veteran Cosme Rivera, 30-11-2 (21). Rivera floored Berto in the sixth with a perfect uppercut but couldn't finish the former Olympian off and had to then fight through a bad cut enroute to losing a unanimous decision to the high quality up and comer from Florida. Heavyweight hopeful Chazz Witherspoon, 19-0 (13), was also on the bill, impressively stopping journeyman Talmadge Griffis, 24-7 (16), in the ninth. More...

Floyd Mayweather Jr is set to cut short his retirement and return to the ring for a super-fight against the unbeaten Ricky Hatton on December 8 following the UK fighter's comments last month.
Hatton recorded his 43rd victory and 31st knock-out when he stopped Jose Luis Castillo, the former WBC lightweight champion, in four rounds in Las Vegas on June 23.
After the bout Hatton was reported as saying that, "You saw more excitement in those four rounds than you've seen in Floyd's whole career," which Mayweather 38-0 (24) believes is a lack of respect and has hastened his return.
"I think he just wants to hear himself talk," Mayweather said to USA TODAY. "He got in front of the media and called my name out. He didn't think I was going to respond, but it doesn't work like that. I've accomplished too much in the sport for him to disrespect me." More...

Two former welterweight world champions square off tonight at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington with the WBC Light Middleweight title at stake.
Both Carlos Baldomir and Vernon Forrest have seen the heights of success and the lows of disappointment over the course of their long careers and are well aware that this contest is a winner take all affair.
The winner will likely go onto lucrative unification fights while the loser may very well face a long, hard climb back to world level if it is even possible as both are in their 36th year.
With a height and quickness advantage, Forrest, 38-2 (28), will almost certainly seek to keep the bull-like Baldomir at arm's length, keeping the jab in the Argentine fighter's face all night and threatening the big right hand should "Tata" get inside.
Baldomir is well aware of his disadvantages and will likely charge Forrest and make the lanky Georgia man to work in order to take enough stamina away and force trench warfare in the later rounds. More...
