It was a packed house at 'The Muni', otherwise known as Municipal Hall, in Colne, Lancashire, England yesterday for another VIP Promotion by Steve Wood. There were four contests followed by 'entertainment for the boys' as part of the 'JollyBoys Tour'.

Young Jack Arnfield of Bobby Rimmer's Boxing Academy won impressively in his second pro fight. Enjoying huge support from the Colne audience, Arnfield looked cool and confident as he faced Birmingham based Welshman Lance Verallo in a four round light welterweight bout.

It was an exciting contest with Verallo down on the canvas and then finally knocked down again in round four.

Arnfield wins by TKO, climbing to 2-0 (2), while Verallo remains winless at 0-20 (0). More...

Boxing Prediction: Mayweather Will Crush Hatton’s Vegas Dream

By Alejandro Tostado November 26th, 2007 All Boxing Predictions

Click for larger image

The upcoming December 8 showdown between boxing's top pound for pound performer Floyd Mayweather and British wrecking ball Ricky Hatton has captured the imagination of fans of the sport the world over as the date draws near.

Most in the media are tipping Mayweather to extend his dominance over the sport with a comprehensive victory over Hatton. But the hopes of an entire nation are riding on the shoulders of the stocky Mancunian as British fans are banking on the idea that once again "The Hitman" can return to the Colonies with the intent of proving his legion of American doubters wrong.

The Brits are a hardy lot and when they love, they love hard but in this instance, their affection for Hatton's Vegas dream will be crushed by the flying fists of none other than the man they love to hate, Floyd "Pretty Boy" Mayweather.

Mayweather became a world champion when Hatton was still fighting no hope Englishmen in leisure centers and has faced so many top class opponents since that time that it this piece would have to be a multi-part article to fully cover the quality of opposition in his career. More...

IBF Champion Paulie Malignaggi Punches Back At Critics

By Boxing Press November 26th, 2007 All Press Releases

International Boxing Federation light welterweight champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi, rated No. 2 by The Ring, believes stylish boxing skills like his are far less appreciated in today’s knockout-crazed world of boxing than it’s ever been.

“Pure boxers today aren’t as highly valued as they should be,” the outspoken Brooklyn pugilist said from his Vero Beach (FL) training camp. “Even all-time great boxers like Willie Pep and Pernall Whitaker, if they were boxing today, wouldn’t be as appreciated. Floyd Mayweather is the best in the world, maybe ever, but critics complain because he’s so good that, he wins so easily and isn’t in wars. More...

Arslan Shocks Hill In Germany To Take WBA Title

By Danny Wilson November 25th, 2007 All Boxing Results

Father time finally caught up with heavily decorated two weight world champion Virgil Hill as the 43 year old was outperformed by challenger Firat Arslan, losing the WBA Cruiserweight title by a wide points verdict at Freiberger Arena in Dresden, Germany.

37 year old Arslan, a former longtime sparring partner of ex-European Champion Luan Krasniqi, sought to wear down the older man from the opening bell and backed up Hill for most of the fight.

Forced to largely rely on his countering skills, Hill kept up a good punch output but was unable to dissuade the oncoming German southpaw, who was able to land with both hands in the early rounds.

Hill attempted to take the steam out of Arslan's attack in the middle rounds but didn't have the power to hold onto the center of the ring and was soon again on the back foot.

Arslan fought the fight of his life, rocking the iron chinned champion with big shots down the stretch but was never able to hurt Hill as the American visitor showed good stamina to stay in the bout but he just couldn't take away the challenger's confidence. More...

Boxing In Mexico: Edgar Sosa Keeps WBC Belt In Veracruz

By Richard Eberline November 25th, 2007 All Boxing Results

Last night in Veracruz, Mexico, WBA Light Flyweight Champion Edgar Sosa retained his crown with a fourth round stoppage over challenger Roberto Carlos Leyva at Estadio Beto Avila.

The bout started off slow but by the second frame, Sosa had finished studying and began fighting Leyva, pushing the faded former IBF Minimumweight titlist back with unrelenting pressure.

Sosa was dominant in the third, hammering the challenger with right hands despite fierce counterpunching from Leyva.

The end came in the fourth as Leyva was speared on the ropes with a massive left hook to the body, prompting a referee stoppage.

Sosa, 30-5 (16), and Leyva, 24-7-1 (20), came into this bout from very different career angles; Sosa had won his last 17 bouts, turning back such top men as Brian Viloria, Luis Alberto Lazarte and Noel Arumbulet, while Leyva had only won three of his last nine, dropping contests to elite minimum and bantam weights fighters as Ivan Calderon, Ivan Hernandez, Daniel Reyes and Miguel Barrera. Ringside Boxing Report: Ricardo Mayorga vs. Fernando Vargas

By Michael Worden November 24th, 2007 All Ringside Boxing

** With Slideshow**

© Michael Worden / Saddo Boxing

The one thing, above all others, that hardly anyone around boxing felt that would occur at this fight was a 12 round decision. Due to the hype and fervor that surround the promotion of the bout, it appeared almost certain that the bout would end early.

However, Ricardo Mayorga, 29-6-1 (23), managed to outwork the hometown favorite Fernando Vargas, 26-5 (22), over twelve rounds to secure a majority decision last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

From the opening bell, Mayorga bounded towards Vargas and began throwing his signature haymakers. Many of them were blocked by a high Vargas guard, however it was obvious that they were having an effect. More...

SaddoBoxing Exclusive: Calzaghe Denies Hopkins’ Reported $8 Million Offer Was Made

By Rob Lewis November 24th, 2007 All Boxing Interviews

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

According to media sources, Bernard Hopkins recently stated in an interview that Golden Boy Promotions has made an $8 million offer to Joe Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren for Calzaghe to fight Hopkins in the United States on a Golden Boy promotion.

Earlier today, I contacted Calzaghe to inquire if the rumors were true and here is what the super middleweight champion had to say on the reports.

"If this is true, just tell me the time and date and I’ll be there!", said Joe. "I have spoken to Frank [Warren] and he assured me that he has received no such offer from Golden Boy."

Calzaghe even logged on to his computer during our conversation to see the article for himself, since neither he nor his camp had heard any such talk, either in person or through news sources, prior to my contacting him More...

Boxing Preview: Erdei vs. Mendoza, Hill vs. Arslan

By Ricky Jones November 24th, 2007 All Boxing Previews

Universum stages a big bill tonight in Dresden, Germany as longtime WBO Light Heavy Champ Zsolt "Firebird" Erdei puts his belt at risk against Panama's Tito Mendoza and ageless wonder Virgil Hill defends his WBA Cruiser crown against interim titlist Firat Arslan.

Erdei, 27-0 (17), won the WBO title nearly four years ago by defeating Julio Gonzalez by decision and has successfully retained the belt eight times against a mixture of largely top European and South American competition but as of late has faced second tier North American opponents.

The 33 year old Hungarian has superb boxing skills but continues the trend of not competing against the other world champions at light heavy by squaring off with Mendoza, 36-7 (28).

At 6 foot 3, Mendoza will have a five inch height advantage over the champion and the Panamanian used his towering presence to good advantage earlier in his career in weight classes from light welter all the way to super middleweight. More...

World Friday Night Boxing Roundup

By Danny Wilson November 24th, 2007 All Press Releases

Aside from the Ricardo Mayorga vs. Fernando Vargas bout in Los Angeles, there was a good bit of action across the globe last night and we start in the land Down Under.

At the Croatian Club in the Sydney suburb of Punchbowl, the Australian middleweight title was defended by reigning champion Junior Talipeau, 9-0 (2), who posted a fairly close ten round points win over a very competitive Peter Mitreveski, Jr., 17-5-1 (7).

Local man Mitreveski towered over the stocky New Zealand based champion but lost a point in the first and that margin would prove significant as the challenger fell short on the cards, 96-95, 96-94 and 97-92.

Up north on the Gold Coast, a charity show was held at the Brisbane Convention Center with 20 year old light welter Leonardo "Lenny Zappa" Zappavinga, 12-0 (9), of Sydney staying on track by dropping Ariel Omongos, 4-12 (3), twice in the fourth to win at 2:03 of that round.

There was a high profile domestic matchup at the Fashion Mart in Kobe, Japan, as defending Japanese Bantamweight titlist Masayuki Mitani, 21-2 (10), rebounded off a last round stoppage loss for the OPBF crown in August by holding off former WBC title challenger Teppei Kikui, 21-7 (4), of Yokohama to post a 99-93 and 98-92 (twice) unanimous verdict. Boxing Prediction: Hatton Will Shock Mayweather

By Ricky Jones November 23rd, 2007 All Boxing Articles, Boxing Predictions

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

After emerging victorious from the biggest PPV fight of all time against modern day great Oscar De La Hoya this past May, is WBC Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather headed for a shocking upset against Ricky "Hitman" Hatton on December 8?

Mayweather has a long history of rubbishing Hatton and spent most of his publicity tour with the world light welter champion contending that the Englishman didn't belong in the same ring.

Additionally, Mayweather signed on for a stint this Autumn on the TV show, "Dancing With The Stars", hardly the actions of a fighter who believes that he is going into a dangerous fight.

Conversely, Hatton has had what insiders are calling the training camp of his life and once again, finds himself with nothing to lose against a fighter that many are giving him zero chance to upset. More...

Bad Blood Grudge Match Reaches Boiling Point In LA

Vargas And Mayorga Make Weight, Cintron vs. Feliciano on the Undercard

The ten year career of Fernando Vargas will come to a close tonight in a bad blood bout that could even eclipse the raw hate on display during the lead up to the Oscar De La Hoya fight in 2003.

Yesterday, Vargas, 26-4 (22), and wild man opponent Ricardo Mayorga, 28-6-1 (23), of Nicaragua had to separated by a wall of plexiglass at the official weigh-in but nonetheless continued their rolling, spite filled feud.

Both men scaled a career high 164 lb in preparation for their Showtime PPV bout at Los Angeles' Staples Center and that will likely become an advantage for the bigger Vargas, who was listless when having to make the light middle limit twice in title fight losses to Shane Mosley last year.

Mayorga has achieved his biggest successes at welterweight, wins against Vernon Forrest and Andrew Lewis, by blitzing opponents with his roundhouse punching style.

That hasn't worked so well at higher weights where Mayorga was gunned down at light middle by Oscar De La Hoya and at middleweight by Felix Trinidad. More...
