However, for the past 40 years the middleweight division has endured a void -- great champions without great championship rivalries.

Until now. More...

Boxing Preview Analysis: Fernando Vargas vs. Ricardo Mayorga

By Lee Bellfield November 21st, 2007 All Boxing Previews

The Staples Centre in Los Angeles plays host this Friday to a bout between two former champions in Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga.

The big question obviously, when you observe this matchup, is how much has either man got left?

Lets start with Vargas. It's hard to believe that "Ferocious" is still only thirty years of age. A former two time light middleweight champion, he still has a respectable professional record of 26 wins with only 4 defeats.

He first won world honours in December 1998 when he stopped the rugged Yory Boy Campas in seven rounds. Things seemed to be going well for Vargas when he successfully negotiated title defences against respected names such as Ike Quartey and Winky Wright.

Then, he stepped into the ring against Felix Trinidad in December 2000. Despite showing great heart, rising from two first round knockdowns, he was finally pummelled to defeat in 12 brutal rounds. More...

Matt Godfrey vs Jeremy Williams Canceled!

By Daxx Kahn November 21st, 2007 All Boxing Articles

NABF Cruiserweight Champion and WBC's number one ranked contender Matt "Too Smooth" Godfrey, 16-0 (9), was ready and set to settle any doubts that Jeremy "Half Man Half Amazing" Williams, 42-5 (35), had about his validity as a future star of the sport this coming Saturday in a bout scheduled to take place in Connecticut's Convention Center in Hartford. The bout would have had Godfrey's NABF title on the line and number one ranking in what would have been his toughest opponent to date.

Godfrey, who spoke with SaddoBoxing earlier this week, stated he was looking forward to this bout taking place so he could come out victorious and move on to face number two ranked Czech Republic native Rudolf Kraj, 12-0 (9) and determine the mandatory for newly crowned WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Cruiserweight Champion David "Hayemaker" Haye.

Today it was announced by the card's promoter, CES boxing, that the bill was canceled in an untimely fashion as a promotional partner had pulled and they were sorry for the inconvienience and would keep everyone updated on when the fight would take place.

Also scheduled on the undercard was undefeated cruiserweight prospect Aaron Williams, 15-0 (11), undefeated super featherweight Matt Remillard, 11-0 (7), and super middleweight Joe Spina, 20-1 (15).

KERMIT CINTRON:

“Feliciano is a tough fighter that comes to win. He doesn’t try to survive. It is a dangerous fight. He’s going to come and try and take the title away from me. He’s got heart, but in my opinion he can’t punch. We will have to find out on Friday in the ring.

“To me, this is a dangerous fight. With his record this is an amazing opportunity for him. He is hungry and he is going to come to fight. He is thinking that this is his one chance to walk out of that ring a world champion. More...

Exclusive SaddoBoxing Interview: Matt Godfrey

By Daxx Kahn November 20th, 2007 All Boxing Interviews

Getting ready to be "Too Smooth" for Jeremy Williams

On November 24, undefeated NABF Cruiserweight Champion Matt "Too Smooth" Godfrey, 16-0 (9), sets to defend his title for the second time against Jeremy "Half Man Half Amazing" Williams, 42-5 (35), in Hartford, Connecticut's Convention Center.

Godfrey, who will be fighting for the third time in seven months, will be taking on his most experienced opponent to date in a bout that honestly has some people shaking their heads, wondering how it all came about, including Godfrey.

Williams, who has not fought under the 195 lb mark since 1992 and had not stepped into the ring since being starched by Samuel Peter via second round KO in December of 2005, began his comeback towards the cruiserweight division in August of this year with a lackluster eight round split decision victory over lightly regarded Gary Gomez, 18-8-1.

Shortly after the Gomez bout and a performance that has been described as "painful to watch", Matt Godfrey's name suddenly began to spout out of Williams's mouth like a geyser shooting water, even making comments such as "Matt Godfrey hasn't done anything to impress me" and "Matt Godfrey is what stands in my way of a world title". Words said with such a tone of conviction that one would think there was bad blood between the two dating back to grammar school. More...

Ronald Hearns: A Waiting Cobra

By Gerald Rice November 20th, 2007 All Boxing Interviews

Ronald “The Motor City Cobra” Hearns has one of the most famous last names in the sport of boxing, racked up 13 KO's in 16 victories against no losses and has fought all across the country in his brief three-and-a-half year career.

But he is still largely unknown.

However, with the dawn of 2008, many boxing fans may get to know the 6’3” junior middleweight in the opening fight of Showtime's Championship Boxing broadcast headlined by IBF Light Welter Champion Paul Malignaggi's defense against challenger Herman Ngoudjo on January 5.

SaddoBoxing confirmed the rumor that Hearns is interested in a fight with another undefeated son of a Hall of Fame fighter, Julio César Chávez, Jr.

“My promoter’s looking into that, so if they want to fight I don’t have no problem with that; whoever they put in front of me I’ll fight," said Hearns. More...

The mega fight “Undefeated” between Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton is just under three weeks away. With the fight fast approaching Golden Boy Promotions will be hosting a series of conference calls for the media to discuss the upcoming event.

The media conference calls began last week with the announcement of the undercard featuring Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy against Contender Season One finalist Peter Manfredo, Jr. Both fighters share a loss to Joe Calzaghe as well as recent surgeries from boxing related injuries.

Ringside Boxing Report: Guzman vs Soto

By Jim Everett November 19th, 2007 All Ringside Boxing

***Ringside Report with Slideshow***

Golden Boy Promotions in association with Sycuan Ringside Promotions put on a highly anticipated match-up on Saturday night at the Borgata in Atlantic City, NJ as Joan Guzman defended his WBO Junior Lightweight Title against hard-hitting contender Humberto Soto.

Although Guzman had not been in the ring since last December, he showed no signs of any ring rust as he was able to use his superior speed to outclass his challenger. Soto did a good job of getting Guzman on the ropes throughout the fight, but was unable to take advantage as most of his punches were either blocked or smothered by the champion.

The fight opened with Soto moving forward, trying to put pressure on Guzman as he backed him into the corner on a couple of occasions but was unable to land anything clean. Guzman moved well and seemed comfortable taking shots from Soto.

Both fighters came out in the second round trading hard, wild shots. Guzman with his back to the ropes was able to counter well and landed a good head-body combination. More...
