Boxing Round By Round: Chris John vs. Roinet Caballero

By Bruce Dingo January 27th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Last night at the Istora Bung Karno Arena in Jakarta, Indonesia, WBA Featherweight Champion Chris John kept his title when Panama's Roinet Caballero could not answer the bell for the eighth round. Afterward, John resumed his campaign to lure Manny Pacquiao into the ring.

Round one: John coming forward behind the jab, but Caballero moving well and is successful with left hands to the body and counter rights to the head. Near the end of the frame, Caballero lands a stiff right hand and John tries to step up the pace, cornering Caballero but unable to do much before the bell sounds.

Round two: John very active behind the jab but Caballero fighting him back with aggressive counters and body shots. John finally strikes the target with a sharp jab, right hand combination. Caballero tries to hold John back with counters but the champion starts to time his shots well, winning a quick exchange on the inside and causing the Panamanian to fall back.

The skirmishes continue to mount as John times a right over a missed Caballero jab. Caballero looks to maintain distance as the pair trade left hooks. John keeps pressing the action and lunges inside with a body, head, body combination. Caballero lands a right hand over top a John jab and the challenger begins to come forward, enjoying some success to the body but eating some leather in the process. The end of the second devolves into a brawl with many missed wild punches until John nails Caballero with a stiff jab at the bell.

Round three: Caballero holds the center of the ring by circling the champion but is slowly forced back and after missing a big shot is countered with three quick left hands to the body and head. Caballero fights back with a two handed flurry to the body but is soon forced back again when John finds range with the jab. More...

Boxing In Germany: Alexander Povetkin Gives “Fast” Eddie Chambers A First Loss

By Hermann Helmut January 27th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Eastern European domination of boxing's glamor division continued last night as Russia's Alexander Povetkin officially became the top up and coming heavyweight in the world with a twelve round handling of America's best hope, "Fast" Eddie Chambers.

In front of 3,500 fans in the packed state of the art Tempodrom Arena in downtown Berlin, the 2004 Olympic Gold Medal winner Povetkin proved his recent victory over former IBF Champion Chris Byrd was no fluke with an impressive performance against Chambers.

It wasn't easy as the 25 year old Chambers early on displayed the superb speed that beat contenders Calvin Brock and Dominic Guinn last year by punishing the oncoming Russian through the first four rounds with bracing combinations.

Heeding the advice of his corner to work harder and faster, Povetkin stepped it up. Having proved that he could take the best shots Chambers had to offer, he simply kept coming, pushing the American visitor back behind an efficient jab and hard body shots that had "Fast" Eddie more concerned about defense than his own offense in the middle rounds. Boxing Preview: Alexander Povetkin vs. Eddie Chambers

By Andrew Wake January 26th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

© Jan Sanders / Goossen Tutor Promotions

"Fast" Eddie Chambers doesn’t just carry his own hopes of world glory in to ring tonight, Saturday, January 26, he carries on his broad shoulders the expectancy of an entire nation.

As we all know, the American’s once dominated a division that was seen as the glamour weight class and it’s top prize, the undisputed heavyweight title, was the most sought after and lucrative accolade in the whole of sport. Needless to say, as the interest in the sweet science has waned in recent years, the waters in the US heavyweight talent pool has become extremely shallow.

25 year old Chambers, 30-0 (16), aims to take a step closer to putting his nation back on the heavyweight boxing map when he takes on Russia’s Germany based Alexander Povetkin in an IBF final eliminator at the Tempodrom Arena in Kreuzberg, Berlin this evening. He is confident he is up to the task and is not fazed by travelling to the proverbial lion’s den- or in this case the "White Lion’s" den. More...

Putting His Title On The Lynes: European Light Welter Champ In Action Tonight In Dagenham

By Andrew Wake January 25th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

The resurgent Colin Lynes embarks on the maiden defence of his European light welterweight crown this Friday evening when he faces late substitute Juho Tolppola of Finland at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, England on a Matchroom promotion.

Lynes, 30-3 (12), was expecting two time world title challenger and former European king Gianluca Branco to be coming out of the opposing corner at fight time but the Italian withdrew earlier this week, not that it will really bother the 30 year old former printer from Hornchurch. After two journeys on the road to hostile venues, Lynes will just be happy to have his first defence in front of his adoring East London fans.

To say that Lynes has had a mixed career so far would be an understatement. As an amateur, he was a three time National junior champion. After turning pro in 1998, he racked up 21 straights wins and claimed the IBO Intercontinental title, but in the first defence of his new crown he was overworked by South Africa’s Samuel Malinga in 2003 and forced to quit on his stool with two badly swollen eyes after eight punishing rounds.

After three routine comeback fights, Lynes won the IBO title proper when he edged a split decision over Argentina’s Pablo Daniel Sarmiento in 2004. Things were looking up again and, after successfully defending his trinket against Juaquin Gallardo, he got the opportunity to challenge the then British, Commonwealth and European ruler, Junior "The Hitter" Witter in October, 2005.

Lynes was a major underdog but made a good account of himself as he extended an off key Witter but still dropped a close points but unanimous verdict.

He returned two months later but again tasted defeat as he was literally sick in his corner against the undefeated Lenny Daws and after nine rounds of action, was forced to quit. He now attributes this loss to a viral infection. More...

Bobby Rimmer spoke to SaddoBoxing this morning to confirm that Michael Gomez will be fighting for the WBU Lightweight title in March. Former British Champion Gomez, 34-8 (24), will face Scottish boxer Lee McAllister, 25-1 (5), in Aberdeen, Scotland on 29 March.

Gomez comes back after losing to British Super Featherweight Champion Carl Johanneson in a bloody battle back in November. “ It was a big occasion,” said Bobby. “Michael wanted to fight it his way and was determined to die on his sword and he did!”

“Mike's been back in training for the past two weeks and seems more relaxed. His training is going great, he’s doing really well. I think he’ll be more chilled for this fight.”

McCallister, who has only suffered one loss in his 26 fight record, will be fighting on home turf. The ‘Aberdeen Assassin’ defeated Craig Docherty in October to take the vacant WBU Lightweight title. Despite suffering a broken nose, McCallister forced a TKO in round nine. More...
