One of Manchester's favorite sons was in action on the Hatton vs. Lazcano bill this past Saturday at City of Manchester Stadium as Jamie Moore came back from a shoulder surgery to face young Mexican brawler Esau Herrera in a scheduled eight round contest at middleweight.

The two-time former British Light Middleweight Champion voluntarily gave up his British belt in December to allow stablemate Gary Woolcombe the opportunity as Moore was targeting the European title of champion Zaurbek Baysangurov on the same bill in Wigan before he severely injured his shoulder a week from fightnight. The second bout of the massive Hatton vs. Lazcano card on Saturday night at City of Manchester Stadium featured towering light middleweights Andrew Facey and Thomas McDonagh.

Facey was coming into the bout as the reigning English Champion and at age 36, had experienced his biggest fights over the last year and a half.

While the lean six footer had earlier in his career derailed the developments of such promising prospects Matthew Macklin, Gilbert Eastman and Matthew Tait but that phase of Facey's CV was brutally put down by Jamie Moore in a failed British title bid in 2003. More...

Our massive coverage of the historic Ricky Hatton vs. Juan Lazcano card this past Saturday night in Manchester, England continues with the first of three undercard bouts.

A contest for the vacant English Super Bantamweight title opened the show and it was a highly contentious affair between undefeated prospect Mark Moran and the half-brother of ex-British Champion Carl Johanneson, the gritty Danny Wallace.

The bout opened with southpaw Moran using good footwork to deal with the pressure of Wallace. The highly regarded Liverpool lad tried to keep Wallace at bay with the right hand jab and the tactic worked initially. More...

By Jane Warburton May 26th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

Saturday night, at a packed City of Manchester Stadium, Ricky ‘Hitman’ Hatton successfully defeated tough Mexican-American, “The Chosen-Juan” Lazcano in a twelve-round IBO Light Welterweight Title fight.

Lazcano enters the ring wearing bright red ‘matador-style’ clothing and a large red sombrero hat, walking alongside trainer Ronnie Shields.

Michael Buffer then introduces Hatton as “The Pride of Manchester “ and before the usual ‘Blue Moon’ entrance song, Rick had his own ‘special’ version of ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’ which referred to his ‘Fatton’ Days! “They say he’s never seen a salad… he likes his pies and pasties… Hi Ho Ricky Hatton,” the crowd laughed at the lyrics. Then as the traditional ‘Blue Moon’ rings out - Hatton appears looking rather ‘bigger’ than usual, dressed in a padded suit - as ‘Fatman’. More...

On Saturday night at the City of Manchester Stadium, the much anticipated re-match between IBF Light Welterweight Titlist Paulie Malignaggi and Lovemore N’Dou saw a tough and frustrating fight for the champion.

Lovemore N’Dou ‘The Black Panther’ - wearing white and black - received good support from the applauding crowds.

Malignaggi entered the ring wearing a red and silver glittery outfit and a blue glittery mask on his face. Clearly enjoying the big occasion he danced as he waited to get to the ring. But the ‘Magic Man’ had a less enthusiastic reception - as the crowds booed and jeered loudly. Perhaps getting in some practice for the possible clash with Hatton later down the line! More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Craig Watson Vs. Matthew Hatton

By Jane Warburton May 26th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

© Curtis McCormick / Saddo Boxing

There were a total of five title fights on Saturday night at the City of Manchester Stadium, England.

“Magic” Matthew Hatton challenged Craig Watson for the Commonwealth (British Empire) Title.

I was fortunate to speak with Watson briefly on Friday and he told me “I’m really looking forward to this fight, it’s a big occasion in front of all those people but I’m feeling very confident.”

Hatton, wearing his trademark camouflage shorts enters the ring alongside trainer, Billy Graham. Watson, in the dark blue and white shorts, sprinted to the ring with his team headed by trainer, Joe Pennington.

Southpaw Watson gets off to a good start, looking the sharper of the two men. Hatton seems to be taking time to ‘suss-out’ his opponent - looking for the ‘shot’. A right hook comes from Hatton mid-way through the round. Hatton almost ‘stalks’ Watson from his central position. Hatton’s nose is bleeding as he goes back to the corner at the end of the first round. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Wigan, England

Last night at the Robin Park Centre, Wigan, England, Steve Woods / VIP Boxing promoted a fight night of seven contests - on the eve of Ricky Hatton’s ‘HomeComing.’

The ‘Bill’ was to have headlined the much anticipated re-match between Michael Gomez and Peter McDonagh but Gomez is now to fight Amir Khan on 21st June. Gomez was ringside to support stablemate - Jack Arnfield of Bobby Rimmers’ Boxing Academy.

Top of the ‘bill’ saw Brett Flourney of Merseyside outpoint Ukranian Vladimir Borovski in a six-round welterweight contest. Southpaw Flourney landed some solid body-shots and right punches but Borovski is a tough fighter who seemed undeterred by the shots.

The Ukranian is quite a character and did quite a bit of showboating! Calling Flourney ‘on’ - gesturing that it didn’t hurt - what else have you got!’ and laughing. He even took time to glance up at the crowds and ‘egg’ them on! But Flourney kept focused and won the contest by 60-54. He didn’t look happy with the performance as he went back to his corner - shaking his head, but it’s another win for the Mersey-man who improves to 9 wins and no losses. More...

Boxing Results from Around the Globe

By Daxx Kahn May 24th, 2008 All Boxing Results

It was a busy night around the world as fighters battled it out for hometown recognition along with regional titles in hopes of taking that next step into global spotlight. Some winning and accomplishing their goal, others sent back to the drawing board. Without any further delay lets see who came out on top as we take a hop around the map.

Mt Druitt Workers Club, Mt Druitt New South Wales Australia

Dominic “The Dominator” Vea 7-1 (5) defended his OPBF Cruiserweight Title when he faced Daniel “The Doberman” Ammann 13-2-1 (3). The challenger Ammann who entered the ring on an 11 bout win streak was looking for one more minor title win for his collection that already consist of The New South Wales Cruiserweight and Australian belts he had claimed in the past.

Champion Vea was just a bit more determined though wanting to not only make the second defense of his OPBF crown but avenge his only loss, a majority decision when he challenged Ammann in November of 2006 for the Australian Cruiserweight belt. In the end Vea left with not only his belt intact but the score between the two even up as the judges saw it his way via unanimous decision.

On the undercard cruiserweight action ensued as Josh “The Chainsaw” Clenshaw 24-13 (13) won an 8 round points decision over Joel Casey 3-3 (2) More...

ESPN Boxing: Friday Night Fight Results

By Daxx Kahn May 24th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Lincoln Rhode Islands, Twin River Event Center played host to ESPN2 Friday Night Fight’s card as promoter Jimmy Burchfield put on a quality night of boxing for fans not only in attendance but those viewing on television around the world.

The main event of the evening showcased undefeated Aaron “Awesome” Williams 17-1-1 (12) in his first outing as a main event status fighter when he faced hard punching dangerous Jose Luis Herrera 16-4 (16). Williams started out the fight impressively when he battered Herrera in round one sending him to the canvas for an eight count and while Jose survived the first, rounds two thru four continued on the same as Williams controlled the bout using superior skill to keep Herrera at bay.

In round five almost as if trying to set an example of what not to do after the words “Williams is keeping his hands too low and could get caught” poured out of analyst Teddy Atlas’ mouth, Herrera lands a right hand that stuns Williams pushing him back to the ropes, then after another onslaught of punches by Jose he dropped to the mat.

After beating the count and continuing on Williams moves away from any big shots Herrera might land to close the show by dropping down on his own to a knee. The referee led Williams to the corner for the doctors opinion who decided Williams was unable to continue on giving him his first career loss.

In a co-feature former Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada 14-1 (3) faced off against Moultrie “Jack Hammer” Witherspoon 14-2 (8). It was apparent from the opening bell that Witherspoon the 6’6” 34 year old out of Columbia South Carolina was out gunned and out classed. Moultrie who did not begin his pro career until he was 30yrs old ate left, right combinations followed by uppercuts in rounds one and two that had the referee closely debating on stopping the bout. Today, at the Trafford Centre, Manchester, England, crowds of fans lined the ‘Orient’ area of the ‘mall’ to watch the weigh-ins for tomorrow night’s “Homecoming” fight night, promoted by Frank Maloney in association with Punch Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

The weigh-in stage sat below the huge video screen in the food court area. Boxers would be facing the ‘ocean-liner-style’ area, under a simulated starry night-sky where hoards of fans waited for a glimpse of the boxers.

“There’s only one Ricky Hatton,” was played by the Hitman’s ‘Band’ from their balcony position and the crowds join in. Michael Buffer started proceedings in his trademark manner. “Manchester are you ready?” he boomed and when the reply back from the crowds wasn’t loud enough - he repeated it and the excitement around the ‘Orient’ increased.
