Ringside Boxing Report: Michael Gomez vs. Chris Brophy

By Jane Warburton September 29th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

**With Slideshow**

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

Yesterday at the Municipal Hall in Colne, Lancashire, England, VIP Promotions' Steve Wood hosted an afternoon of boxing which saw the return of Irish-Mancunian former two-time British Super Featherweight Champion Michael Gomez.

Gomez was back out for the first time since his defeat to Bolton's Commonwealth Lightweight Champion Amir Khan in June of this year. Now under new trainer, Kevin Maree, a heavier Gomez took the fight against light middleweight Chris Brophy, with just a few days notice.

Entering the ring to huge support - as always - Gomez paced the ring back and forth like a man possessed as he waited to get going. As the bell signalled the start of this four round contest - it was clear that Gomez was going to go at Brophy like a bull at a gate. And the Welshman, now based in Preston, found himself on the canvas inside the first half minute of the opening round. More...

Steve Cunningham Cheers On Krzysztof Wlodarczyk In His New Challenge

By Boxing Press September 29th, 2008 All Press Releases

IBF Cruiserweight World Champion, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, was quick to praise the performance of his former championship opponent, Krzysztof ‘Diablo’ Wlodarczyk 41-2 (3KOs), who is taking part in the Polish television version of American hit series ‘Dancing with the Stars’.

‘USS’ Cunningham and ‘Diablo’ have had two epic title battles. The first, in November 2006, saw Wlodarczyk lift the vacant IBF Championship Belt with a controversial split-points decision in his home city of Warsaw, Poland. An incensed Cunningham demanded a rematch, The IBF agreed and ordered one, which led to them meeting again just six months later, again in Poland, this time Cunningham was victorious. More...

Boxing Info: Pavlik Celebrates One Year Anniversary Of Title Win

By Boxing Press September 29th, 2008 All Press Releases

One year ago, Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik transformed himself from the No. 1 middleweight contender into world middleweight champion and boxing folk hero.

It was on Saturday, September 29, 2007, in Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, that Pavlik pulled himself off the canvas after a second round knockdown, served up by undefeated defending champion Jermain Taylor, to come roaring back, knocking out Taylor in the seventh round. More...

Boxing Result: Mosley KO’s Mayorga In Final Round

By Richard Eberline September 28th, 2008 All Boxing Results

© Tom Hogan/Golden Boy Promotions

Former world champions Ricardo Mayorga and Shane Mosley may not be top caliber light middleweights anymore but they refuse to go away quietly as they rocked the Staples Center in Los Angeles last night with a thrilling back and forth epic that saw both men have their moments before Mosley's punches finally took their toll.

Mayorga's bull-like rushes had Mosley on the back foot early on as the former three weight world champ absorbed the body attack and roughhousing while he studied his antagonist.

The education began to pay off as Mosley started to time Mayorga and catch the Nicaraguan hard man with bracing blows on the way in. More...

Boxing Result: Jones, Inkin Win World Titles In Hamburg

By Hermann Helmut September 28th, 2008 All Boxing Results

After many years as a nearly man, Panama's Guillermo Jones finally fulfilled his promise as he ripped the WBA Cruiserweight title from reigning champion Firat Arslan at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

Arslan began the bout applying the kind of pressure that had won him the title against Virgil Hill almost a year ago but the challenger used his long experience to minimize the impact of the champion's strategy.

Jones then began to masterfully outbox the German, hammering Arslan from angles and punishing the champion when Arslan did throw back return fire.

Arslan showed tremendous heart and toughness to keep going in the face of the heavy shelling and had success in spots but couldn't deal with the speed and accuracy of the much taller, long armed challenger, suffering cuts in the seventh.

By the tenth frame, Arslan had very little left while Jones seemed fresh and still in full command of his arsenal, forcing a stoppage at 2:33 of the frame More...

Boxing Result: Sosa, Paredes Win, Cheba Dethroned In Mexico City

By Alejandro Tostado September 28th, 2008 All Boxing Results

The packed Arena Mexico in Mexico City saw a torrent of action last night with four titles being fought over and by the time the smoke cleared, there were two new champions.

Edgar Sosa, 33-5 (17), once again kept hold of his WBC Light Flyweight crown, outboxing hardened Filipino visitor Sonny Boy Jaro, 28-7-5 (17), to post a twelve round unanimous decision via scores of 118-109 and 117-110 twice.

OPBF and Philippine Champion Jaro came to fight but couldn't find the target with his big powershots until the ninth frame when he decked the champion. Sosa beat the count and survived the round as Jaro tried but couldn't improve upon his work.

As expected, the clash between Mexican Bantamweight titlist Francisco Paredes, 16-11-1 (14), and the interim holder of that belt, Ramon Leyte, 18-10 (13), was pure trench warfare but after the twelve rounds were over, Paredes emerged the victor by split decision.

Well-traveled Frenchman Ali Cheba, 27-1 (21), finally hit the wall as the Rouen native lost his WBC Youth Light Welterweight crown to towering local man Reyes Sanchez, 13-2 (8), who finished off Cheba in the seventh. More...

Mark “Oak Tree” Brown Wins WBF Americas Heavyweight Title

By Boxing Press September 28th, 2008 All Press Releases

Salem, New Jersey’s, Mark ‘Oak Tree’ Brown 14-1 (7), is the new WBF Americas Heavyweight Champion after a dramatic knockout of Tony Grano 14-1-1 (12), in just over 1 minute of the eighth round last night at the Harbor Yard Arena, Bridgeport, CT

The plucky Brown, who overcame two knockdowns on his way to victory over the previously undefeated Grano, could barely hide his joy as he said “I’m the champ. I took him in his own backyard, he had me down twice but I got up off the canvas and battled back. I thought I’d do him in the 7th, but he held up. So I did him in the 8th. More...

Ringside Boxing Report: Rob Hunt vs. Jason Nesbitt

By Jane Warburton September 27th, 2008 All Ringside Boxing

**With Slideshow**

© Jane Warburton / Saddo Boxing

Last night at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, England, First Team Promotions main men PJ Rowson and Errol Johnson staged a fight night which was headlined by Rob Hunt of Stafford, who faced experienced Jason Nesbitt of Birmingham in an eight round welterweight contest.

Not the tidiest of fights - with Hunt getting a point deducted for holding and which he continues to do throughout the contest. There's a scrap at the end of round six as both men slug it out in the corner just as the bell sounds to end the frame. But, Hunt's long-reaching right punch and right hooks to body gave him the points win he wanted and ensure him a title shot early next year.

Hunt's record now stands at 11-0 (1). More...

Boxing Preview: Shane Mosely vs. Ricardo Mayorga

By Richard Eberline September 27th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

© Gene Blevins - Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions

In what should prove to be an interesting boxer vs. slugger matchup tonight from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, former multi-weight world champions Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga meet in a 12 round contest between aging warriors.

Mosley, 44-5 (37), is the more decorated of the two, having won titles at lightweight, welterweight and light middle and is coming off good performances over the last two years in a losing but hard fought effort against Miguel Cotto, a superb outboxing of Luis Collazo and two stoppage victories over Fernando Vargas.

Mayorga, 29-6-1 (23), is coming off a majority decision win over Vargas last year but the ex-WBC/WBA Welter titlist also was crushed by Oscar De La Hoya in 2006, losing the WBC Light Middle belt in the process. More...

Boxing In Germany: Massive Show Tonight In Hamburg

By Hermann Helmut September 27th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

Two world title bouts and a world title eliminator are on tap tonight at Hamburg's Color Line Arena in one of the year's biggest German shows.

Top of the bill is WBA Cruiserweight Champion Firat Arslan's defense against slick challenger Guillermo Jones in what could very well turn out to be the most difficult fight of the champion's career.

37 year old southpaw Arslan will be giving away almost five inches in height to the six foot four inch challenger but the Suessen based pressure artist has sent the quartet of Darnell Wilson, Virgil Hill, Valery Brudov and Gregory Drozd all packing over the last two years and has proven to be a very motivated fighter in the clutch.

At 36, Jones, 35-3-2 (27), is not exactly young himself but the native Panamanian could very well be the best fighter over the last ten years not to have won a world title.

In a career that started in 1993 as a welterweight, Jones won regional Latin American belts until he earned a shot at reigning WBA Light Middleweight titlist Laurent Boudani in 1998. The bout was declared a draw and they did it again three months later with Boudani retaining by split decision.

Over the next three years, Jones fought at super middle and light heavy before going up to cruiserweight and challenging WBO Champion Johnny Nelson in 2002. Again a draw was declared and Jones took a year and a half off. More...

Boxing In Mexico: Sosa vs. Jaro Tonight For WBC Belt In Mexico City

By Alejandro Tostado September 27th, 2008 All Boxing Previews

Local Mexico City hero Edgar Sosa, 32-5 (17), puts his WBC Light Flyweight crown on the line tonight at Arena Mexico in the capital city and the 29 year old will be looking to make his fifth defense of the belt he won by posting a majority decision over former US Olympian Brian Viloria in April, 2007.

Sosa is on a hot streak, winning his last 20 contests since mounting a failed bid to unseat Mexican Champion Ulises Solis, the current IBF Light Fly titlist, five years ago.

Challenging Sosa will be Manila based OPBF kingpin, Sonny Boy Jaro, 28-6-5 (17), also the champion of his native Philippines. 26 year old Jaro comes into the title bid riding a streak of three straight victories but has also been stopped in all but one of his losses and that could obviously be a problem against the champion.

A Mexican Bantamweight title bout is the chief support contest as power punching champion Francisco Paredes, 15-11-1 (14), faces southpaw interim titlist, Ramon Leyte, 18-9 (13), over twelve rounds. More...

Boxing In America: Friday Night Results

By Richard Eberline September 27th, 2008 All Boxing Results

Yusaf Mack, 26-2-2 (16), continued his comeback as a light heavyweight last night as the NABA Champ retained his title for the first time with a six round TKO of crosstown rival Omar Pittman, 15-5-1 (8), at the National Guard Armory in Philadelphia, PA.

Also on the bill, light middle Derek Ennis, 16-2-1 (12) , won his fourth in a row by posting a wide points decision after ten rounds against 40 year old southpaw Troy Browning, 20-3-1 (8).

At the Morongo Casino in Cabazon, CA, lightweight prospect Vincente Escobedo, 19-1 (12), sparked out previously unbeaten Dominic Salcido, 16-1 (8), at 0:42 of the sixth in a scheduled ten rounder.

Another California prospect was in the victory column at the Morongo as super bantam Nestor Rocha, 20-1 (7), won his third bout on the bounce by stopping 37 year old Puerto Rican veteran Javier Cintron, 14-11-2 (10), in the second frame. More...

By Boxing Press September 27th, 2008 All Press Releases

King Arthur Abraham, 27-0 (22), is pleased to reassure Raul Marquez that he is not ignoring him at all. Earlier this week, the 37 year old mandatory challenger complained about being overlooked by the undefeated IBF middleweight champion, who will make his eighth title defence in Bamberg on October 4. "Abraham´s people are looking beyond me," Marquez claimed. "I want to spoil all that talk about him fighting Pavlik or Wright in his next fight." More...

Boxing is back at Medieval Times! Former world champion Vivian Harris will headline "Knockout Knights" when big time boxing returns to the beautiful Medieval Times Castle in Lyndhurst, NJ on Wednesday, October 29.

The hard-hitting Harris, a Guyanese native who resides in Brooklyn, NY, has long been on the list of boxing's most avoided fighters. David Haye Will Face Monte Barrett At Heavyweight

By Tam Seddon September 26th, 2008 All Boxing Articles

David Haye has now begun his heavyweight campaign after successfully establishing himself as the world's top cruiserweight. His win over Enzo Maccarinelli proved that Haye has done enough at the weight and he can now move up to the heavyweight division.

The second round stoppage was career defining for Haye as the match up had been in anticipation for years. I give Haye great respect for taking that fight because he had problems with the weight and he really had to train hard to make the 200 lb limit. With Haye walking around at over 16 stone [224 lb] in between fights, you can see how much of a big ask it was for him to lose that weight. But he did it and beat Enzo in great knockout style to win the unified cruiserweight crown.

The heavyweight division isn't new for Haye. In early 2007, Haye beat Tomasz Bonin of Poland in brutal knockout fashion. Three knockdowns inside the first round prompted the referee to stop the fight and it was a great start for Haye, who was seeing himself into the weight class. Although Bonin wasn't the best of fighters ,he still held a record of 37 wins and only one loss, to Audley Harrison, who took nine rounds to beat him. It showed how dominant Haye really is over the British heavyweight scene because he got the job done in 105 seconds!

Haye is chasing his dream fight with Wladimir Klitschko and is on the warpath to make this fight happen. David even confronted him at the airport to ask him face to face for the match up. Wladimir knows he has to defend his belt in order to keep hold of it, so he was forced to face mandatory challenger Tony Thompson in a rather boring affair. Wladimir now has to face up and coming prospect Alexander Povetkin in his next fight and Haye questions if Wladimir is capable of beating the young Russian.

I believe Klitschko has been very unlucky with criticism recently. It's really not his fault if fighters get in the ring with him to simply survive and it makes him look bad because of that. During his last two outings, I believe, he was fully in control of the fight sand Sultan Ibragimov was happy to say he didn't get stopped by Klitschko.

Haye is exploiting the fact that the heavyweight devision is really in need of a hero. Ever since Lennox Lewis left in 2003, there hasn't been a legitimate champion in my opinion and the division has been left wide open since that departure. Haye fully believes he has what it takes to be the best in the division and to do that, he simply wants to fight the best a heavyweight. If it was up to Haye, I do believe he would fight Wladimir today, but that not going to happen for the time being.

Haye was told he needs to prove himself as a genuine heavyweight contender by Klitschko because Thompson and Povetkin did genuinely prove themselves. Although Haye is a big name in the cruiserweight division, he hasn't yet had a convincing win at heavyweight to prove to Wladimir that he should share a ring with him. More...

Boxing Result: Williams, Arreola Stop Foes At Soboba Casino

By Richard Eberline September 26th, 2008 All Boxing Results

There were fireworks on tap last night at Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA as WBO Welter Champ Paul Williams, 35-1 (26), made short work of Andy Kolle, 17-2 (12), stopping the Minnesota native in the first round of a non-title bout fought at middleweight.

Despite being a natural middleweight, Kolle was ill-prepared to deal with the power of Williams and was floored by a single shot within a very short time after the contest started.

Heavyweight Chris Arreola, 25-0 (22), needed only three rounds to achieve the same result against opponent Israel Carlos Garcia, 19-2 (11). 38 year old Garcia had never faced the level of competition that Arreola presented and was unable to keep the Californian off, resulting in the early stoppage.
