Last night at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke-on-Trent, England, Frank Maloney promoted a fight-night headlined by local-man Chris Edwards’ first defence of his British and Commonwealth flyweight titles.
Billed as ‘Lord of the Flys', Edwards faced Derby boxer Usman ‘Uzzy’ Ahmed in what would turn out to be a ‘gritty’ battle between the two flyweights.
Ahmed, a popular but ‘odd’ little character, dances into the ring ahead of the Champion. As soon as Edwards reaches the ring, Uzzy goes right up to him in a taunting manner but Edwards remains stony-faced and looked at his opponent with ‘distaste’. Edwards has huge support from the local crowd.
An all-action contest right from the start - both men ‘fly’ at each other but Edwards looks more focussed against the less experienced Ahmed and appears ‘solid’ looking against his skinny opponent. More...

Last night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, FL, Andre Berto retained his WBC welterweight title with a superb points win against challenger Juan Urango.
Urango, the current IBF light welter titlist, employed his trademark pressure approach from the start but had difficulty in finding the target as Berto didn't stick around to be hit.
The champion employed good footwork and showed his cat-quick reflexes in avoiding the tear up that Urango wanted, giving the Colombian challenger a crisp boxing lesson instead.
Berto showed his class in zipping in stinging single shots and sharp counters, mostly upstairs, and controlled the pace enroute to a well deserved 118-110 twice and 117-111 points victory. More...

Despite the headlining Ruslan Chagaev vs. Nicolay Valuev WBA heavyweight title rematch being called off, the show at Hartwell Arena in Helsinki, Finland went on as planned last night.
Local man Juho Tolppola, 22-6-1 (9), failed in his bid to win the European Union light welter title from Italian evergreen Giuseppe Lauri, 48-6 (28), when he was DQ'd in the tenth round.
On the undercard, Colombian born Norway resident Cecilia Braekhus, 12-0 (2), defended her WBA/WBC female welterweight crowns with a points verdict over American puncher Amy Yuratovac, 6-3 (6).
Undefeated Russian light welter southpaw Denis Shafikov, 20-0 (11), gunned down Australia's John Cotterill Jr, 23-8 (10), at 2:00 of the first round while Germany based Swede heavyweight Robert Helenius, 8-0 (4), KO'd former British champ Scott Gammer, 18-4-1 (9), in the sixth of a scheduled eight rounder. Unbeaten Andre Berto continues his run as WBC welterweight champion tonight at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida when defends his crown against two-time IBF light welter champion Juan Urango.
This is the 3rd defence of the title for the 25 year old American. After distance defences against Steve Forbes and Luis Collazo, Berto now meets a man better known as a rugged 140 pounder in Urango.
Berto has 19 KO's in 25 wins. He has fast hands, but on the negative side he did seem to tire in his 12 round win over Collazo.
In Urango, he meets a man who will be in his face all night. Although Urango is the naturally smaller man, Berto will have to be careful with Urango's body punching, which could again slow the champion down.
British fans, of course, will know Urango from his 12 round points defeat against Ricky Hatton back in January, 2007.
If we use that fight as a marker, it was interesting to note that Hatton chose to box carefully when he realised he wasn't going to stop his opponent. In fact, that fight showed Hatton at his most cagey, which says a lot for the danger that Urango threatens. More...

Last night at Johannesburg's Springs Indoor Arena, South Africa's top bantamweight saw his bid for another world title opportunity go up in smoke as Silence Mabuza was stopped by opponent Yonnhy Perez in the 12th and final round.
Mabuza came into the IBF title eliminator as the far more experienced man, having twice contended for the full IBF belt only to be stopped by one of the top pound for pound sluggers in recent times, Rafael Marquez.
31 year old "African Spice" had won his last three contests, picking up the IBO belt and defending it twice in that stretch.
Perez was little known heading into this clash but the heavy-handed 30 year old from Colombia had defeated respectable opposition against no losses and came into the contest as the NABF beltholder. More...

Two good card in Oz this week with Anthony Mundine coming one step closer to challenging for a major world title at middleweight by capturing the IBO crown and super middle Shannon Taylor winning the vacant IBF Pan Pacific belt.
On Wednesday at the Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, ex-two time WBA super middle champ Mundine fought his second bout at middleweight, challenging reigning IBO titlist Daniel Geale in a hotly anticipated showdown in front of an audience of over 8,000.
Geale had the reputation as the country's best pure boxer going into the clash and gave Mundine all he could handle over twelve hard to score rounds, going toe to toe at times or making Mundine miss and nailing "The Man" with sharp counters.
But Mundine also gave a superb performance, landing bracing single right hands and left hooks that shook Geale and won rounds. More...

The heavyweight division kicks back into action tomorrow night in the unlikely city of Helsinki, Finland when giant WBA Champion Nikolay Valuev makes the second defence of his belt against former foe and WBA Champion In Recess Ruslan Chagaev.
The two men know each other very well. Back in April, 2007, Chagaev became the only man to beat Valuev when he took a close majority verdict over 12 rounds in Stuttgart, Germany.
Chagaev, unbeaten in 26 bouts, is one of those boxers who is a nightmare to fight. Relatively small by heavyweight standards and standing 6 foot 1 inch, Chagaev more often than not outfoxes and outsmarts his rivals using the southpaw stance.
Although the 30 year old has stopped 17 of his opponents, it's interesting to note that in the last three years, only one man has been stopped legitimately.
In Valuev, Chagaev meets a giant of a man who, funnily enough, does have underrated boxing skills. Although standing a massive 7 feet tall, the Russian has won many of his title defences over the 12 round course. With only none defeat in 51 fights, Valuev has KO'd 34 opponents. More...

It was May, 1989 and "The Clones Cyclone", Barry McGuigan, was approaching the fourth fight on a comeback trail that had begun just over a year earlier.
After a year long run as World Featherweight Champion the Irishman lost his title in the horrible heat of Las Vegas, Nevada in June, 1986 against late replacement Stevie Cruz.
Contractual difficulties would follow and many doubted that McGuigan would fight again after such a devastating defeat. However, under new promoter Frank Warren, McGuigan would resurface at the higher super featherweight limit.
In April, 1988, the McGuigan comeback was underway as he battered Nicky Perez to submission in four rounds in London. Two more comeback wins would follow before big money was on the table for him to fight the less publicised Londoner Jim McDonnell.
McDonnell, like McGuigan, campaigned as a featherweight early in his career winning the European title in 1985. A unsuccessful world title attempt at super featherweight would follow in 1988, losing on points to the classy South African Brian Mitchell.
Like McGuigan, McDonnell would comeback from this defeat under a new promoter, Barry Hearn.
The titlists at super featherweight in 1989 were Tony Lopez, Brian Mitchell and Azumah Nelson. Many were tipping McGuigan at this time to challenge one of these champions. More...
