For every young fighter trying to make their ascension up the rankings ladder, there is a crafty and hard hitting veteran looking to make their name by knocking him down.
This is exactly the stage that is set for the lightweight bout tonight at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, CA, as the highly touted Mexican prospect Marvin Quintero, 16-1 (12), attempts to take a step up that rankings ladder against the heavy handed Tyrone Harris, 23-5 (12).
Many in the boxing community have been drawing comparisons between Quintero and future Hall of Famer Marco Antonio Barrera.
While that may be a bit premature, his most recent victories over Wes Ferguson, 20-4-1 (6), and Nick Casal, 19-4 (15), have shown that Quintero is maturing as a fighter and utilizing both his power and boxing abilities in the same manner that his fellow countryman did in the early stages of his career.
Quintero is riding high off of twelve straight victories since his lone defeat; however his opponent will be far and away the toughest test to date.
Although Harris was stopped in his last bout, his resume reads like a who’s who of some of division's top fighters. With bouts against names like Urbano Antillon, 26-1 (19), Damian Fuller, 30-6 (14), Koba Gogoladze, 20-3 (8), and former world titlist Stevie Johnston, 42-6 (18), Harris is far and away the more experienced fighter. If the media members who participated in the Showtime Media Prediction Poll have called it correctly, Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley will successfully defend his WBO 140-pound title against former unified lightweight champ Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell.
Bradley (24-0, 11 KOs) of North Palm Springs, CA will take on Campbell (33-5-1, 25 KOs), of Jacksonville, FL in a “homecoming” fight this Saturday, Aug. 1, live on Showtime Championship Boxing at 9 p.m. ET/PT from The Show at Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, CA just minutes from where the champ grew up.  What took David Haye and his braintrust so long to figure out that he was a lot better off fighting Nikolai Valuev for a world title than he was fighting a Klitschko?
If David had come to this realization earlier he would have spared us the charade of pulling out of the Wladimir fight and then the phony negotiations to fight Vitali.
Haye is obviously able to fight at heavyweight and will beat many heavyweights, but he won’t beat the ones who are tall, can “fight tall”, and have pop in their punch.
David was hurt by Jean Mormeck in the cruiserweight division. If and when he is hit by a really good right hand by either Klitschko, the heavyweight dream will be ended. His chances against Wladimir are remotely better because he might hurt Wladimir with one of his own punches - but that’s a longshot.
All that having been said, there will be more money for him to make off this unfortunate episode with the Klitschko if he brings a heavyweight title into the match. That was always the case and it is astonishing to me that the Haye camp didn’t get that and insisted on trying for the Klitschkos first.
I think Haye is the favorite to beat Valuev. He is much quicker than Valuev, (everyone is much quicker than Valuev), will throw enough combinations to keep the giant off balance, and he may be able to take even the best shot of the light punching Valuev.
Valuev is capable of performances that define dreadful in a new way, as evidenced by his “win” over an ancient Evander Holyfield. That version of Valuev would be raked over the coals by Haye.
If Haye can wrest the title from Valuev, I would actually suggest a defense against someone before he tackles a Klitschko, and I suggest Wladimir as his choice. In that case, Haye’s trash talking and fight promotion will seem more credible. More...

The Kent Ex-Boxer Association, KEBA, will hold their annual fundraising event, The Gary Davidson Classic, on August 19 at Darenth Valley Golf Club in Shoreham, Kent, England.
This year's beneficiary will be Gilbert Eastman, who is still recovering from complications following his bout with light middleweight Sam Webb on October 17, 2008.
The Gary Davidson Classic is a combination golfing, dining and auction event that will also feature live comedy.
The highlight of the auction will be a set of prints generously donated by burgeoning artist Nicholas Stafford-Deitsch. A wide array of boxing memorabilia and various items of interest will also be available at the auction. More...
