At The Arena in Mexicali, Mexico last night, Celestino Caballero took out local borderlands man Francisco Leal in the eighth round of their IBF/WBA super bantam title fight.
Mexicali grafter Leal was the very picture of a Cinderella story going into his first title challenge as the four year pro hadn't come anywhere close to world class prior to this surprising opportunity.
Still, Leal had proven his meddle on the highly competitive Mexican scene since a young age and could count on the Mexicali crowd to cheer him on once the bell rang.
That certainly did happen and the vociferous audience support probably helped Leal survive as long as he did against towering 5'11 tall double champion Caballero. More...

Hawaii's favorite son was in action last night at Blaisdell Centre in Honolulu as Brian Viloria came up with a decision over iron-chinned Mexican challenger Jesus Iribe in a firefight to retain the IBF light flyweight title.
Iribe came into the bout as the reigning WBC fecombox titlist and had gone 12 rounds in a losing cause against top man in the division, Edgar Sosa, but "Azul" from Culiacan was the decided underdog in this title challenge.
Cheered on by a heavily partisan audience, Honolulu born Viloria came out and, as expected, gave the visitor a boxing lesson over the first half of the contest.
Viloria aired out his complete arsenal over the first six rounds in a fine display of skill, but Iribe showed true grit and determination to ride it out. More...

Tonight at Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, one of the biggest names on the German scene saw his popularity go through the roof as Marco Huck toppled WBO cruiserweight titlist Victor Emilio Ramirez.
European champ Huck came out all guns blazing and put the normally aggressive Argentine in the unexpected position of having to go defensive to weather the storm.
But Ramirez did just that and turned the tide starting with the third frame, nailing the overly enthusiastic Huck with some big shots.
Huck made an adjustment however and began to box smarter, throwing combinations that allowed him to regain his earlier momentum.
Ramirez stuck to the game plan of trying to level Huck with every punch but by now Huck could see them coming and picked off the champion to win most of the exchanges. More...

At Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany tonight, popular cruiserweight Marco Huck gets another crack at a world title as he challenges reigning WBO champ Victor Emilio Ramirez.
25 year old Ramirez, 15-1 (12), earned his nickname "El Tyson del Abasto" while coming up through the ranks in his native Argentina but the Buenos Aires slugger didn't hit the big time until his most recent bout.
Ramirez posted a split decision over hardened Ukrainian Ali Ismailov at Buenos Aires' famed Luna Park Stadium in May to annex the WBO cruiserweight title.
For his first defense, Ramirez has to face Huck, 25-1 (20), in the European champ's adopted home country, which should be a stern trial by fire. More...

One of boxing's top super bantams, Celestino Caballero, sees action tonight at The Arena in Mexicali, Mexico, facing local man Francisco Leal.
WBA and IBF champion Caballero, 32-2 (22), rides a five year win streak into Mexicali but is coming off a narrow split decision victory over motivated South African challenger Jeffrey Mathebula in April.
The bout tonight against Leal. 14-4-2 (9), who has never been anywhere near world class competition, is likely a tuneup bout for Caballero before the Panamanian heads off for more high profile matchups once again.
On the undercard is a WBC Female super flyweight title bout between champion Ana Maria Torres, 18-3-2 (11), and challenger Ava Knight, 5-0-2 (2).
Also featured is a featherweight bout between Carlos Yanez, 17-2 (14), and Gilberto Sanchez Leon, 19-6-2 (7).

IBF light welter champ Juan Urango retained his belt while light heavy contender Tarvoris Cloud outpointed former champ Clinton Woods to capture the vacant IBF belt last night at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL.
After a slow start, southpaw Urango, 22-2-1 (17), got down to business after getting nailed by a full-blooded right hand from challenger and former WBO titlist Randall Bailey, 39-7 (35), the biggest puncher in the division, in the sixth frame.
Urango was floored heavily but beat the count and went straight after Bailey for the remainder of the bout.
The champion burrowed his way into close quarters and went to work, absorbing some of Bailey's heavy artillery on the way in, until he hit the bulls eye in the ninth, downing the challenger with a sharp counter left.
Bailey regained his feet but was canvassed again during Urango's follow up assault. Bailey beat the count again but by the 11th, all Urango's tenderizing earlier came into force as the challenger was finished off by a body shot at 1:51 of the round. More...

The bantamweight division has an upcoming force who proved to be competition on Wednesday night at DiBella Entertainment's Broadway Boxing in New York City.
Eddie Irizarry produced an exciting win over Felix Flores in a six rounder, setting his record to 7-1-(2). Flores was down in the first couple rounds, and Irrizary fought hard to ensure victory.
Irizarry won the 2004 Golden Gloves and has a dream of becoming a champion. This Bronx native credits boxing with saving his life.
SaddoBoxing: How was training for this bout?
Eddie Irizarry: Training was great. I focused a lot on left handed sparring because of Felix Flores. I sparred 30 rounds with left handed guys from Gleason's Gym.
SB: How is the competition in the bantamweight class?
EI: Well, weight is never an issue for me, so I am always ready. I am always focused and effective with training. There is competition, but like I said I am ready for the challenge. More...

Big show tonight at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL with two IBF belts up for grabs.
Colombian hard man Juan Urango, 21-2-1 (16), makes the first defense of his second reign as IBF light welter ruler when he takes on big punching veteran Randall Bailey, 39-6 (35).
It's hard to believe that Bailey is only 34 as he's been around a long, long time and this will be his fourth attempt to gain back a world title after losing the WBO 140 pound strap to Ener Julio in 2000.
Bailey is going in there to do one thing and one thing only, KO the opponent, but he'll be hard pressed to produce that result against probably the strongest light welter in the world, Juan Urango.
Urango is coming off a points loss to WBC welter titlist Andre Berto after testing the 147 pound waters in May and "Iron Twin" will have to make sure he gets to Bailey first if he wants to walk out of the Hard Rock still a world champ. More...
