A battle for the WBA super flyweight belt was waged today at The Prefectural Gymnasium in Osaka, Japan.
Local hero Nobuo Nashiro was making the second title defense of his second WBA reign and faced Mexico's Hugo Fidel Cazares over twelve rounds.
Ex-WBO light flyweight kingpin Cazares was the more experienced man and brought a three bout win streak to Osaka following his hard fought but failed bid to unseat Ivan Calderon for the Los Mochis man's former title.
Once the bell rang, Cazares pressed the champion in an effort to take the result out of the judges' hands but after 12 rounds of give and take action, the fighters were too close to be separated on the cards, resulting in a 116-112, 114-114 and 112-116 draw.
Nashiro keeps his WBA title and goes to 13-1-1 (8), while Cazares returns to Mexico empty handed after a huge effort with his record now standing at 30-6-2 (22).

Not surprisingly, the aftermath of the Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez match has produced some very simplistic commentaries about the commerce of the fight.
The very good buy rate that topped 1 million has been viewed in a number of different ways. Many of them so absurdly one dimensional that it boggles my mind.
The black and white mentality of commentators in both sports and news is astonishing. There is no more gray. And, I hate to break it to them and the people who buy into their messages, but, most things are in the gray area. Usually there are several factors that make something happen, not just one.
First, the huge buy rate is good news for boxing and it’s good news for Floyd Mayweather, who has long struggled to provide evidence that he can carry a pay per view. In this case, Marquez brought a following, but it was incumbent upon Mayweather to provide the bulk of the interest.
The other specific point that this huge buy rate demonstrates is that, as I suggested in my special commentary (which you can watch below on my boxing channel), when a major match gets the appropriate amount of coverage from the mainstream media, it will flourish and fans will be interested.
That was the case with this fight. Because of Mayweather’s return to the ring, this match got good coverage from newspapers, television and radio. More...

On Friday night at the Velodrome in Manchester, England, Hatton Promotions hosted their first televised fight-night. Billed as ‘Euro Glory’, the fight-card was headlined by the European title clash between Matthew Macklin and Amin Asikainen.
Matthew Macklin (Birmingham) v Amin Asikainen (Finland)
12 x 3 Vacant European Middleweight Contest
It was a very ‘stiff’ Asikainen that came out to face Macklin. Macklin looks focussed - switching between head and body shots - before landing a huge left hook which lands bang-on the face of the Finnish man and he falls back heavily on the canvas in the first round.
Struggling to get up for the count - Asikainen looks unsteady but continues with the fight. Looking dazed - he tries to get away from Macklin but the Brummie goes after him! Seconds later, Asikainen is almost bundled over and it’s a no-knockdown. More...

The WBC light heavyweight belt will remain in Montreal following Jean Pascal’s victory over Silvio Branco on Friday at the Bell Centre.
The bout ultimately ended at 2:19 in the 10th round when Branco’s trainer threw the towel after seeing his fighter knocked down and in bad form from Pascal’s strong hits to the head.
Pascal was able to knock down Branco twice in the tenth round with strong combinations to the Italian's upper body. This bout was a showcase for Pascal, who won the fight convincingly by throwing strong punches in close and using his speedy jab at points when the slower and less mobile Branco stepped out.
The 26-year-old Pascal won the WBC light heavyweight belt with a 12-round unanimous decision over rival Montreal fighter Adrian Diaconu on June 19. More...
