It was a jubuilant scene last night at Restaurante Arroyo in Mexico City as favorite son Jorge Arce delivered a good performance to capture the vacant WBO super flyweight title.
30 year old Los Mochis resident Arce engaged in a toe to toe slugfest with Indonesia's Angky Angkota and not surprisingly was dominating the action for the majority of the bout.
Southpaw Angkota suffered a bad cut over the right eye from a head clash and the bout was stopped in the seventh with Arce declared the winner by technical decision.
Arce improves to 53-6-1 (40), and is likely set to engage in a series of high profile defenses while Angkota heads back to Indonesia with a 23-5 (14) record.
Super bantam Jackie Nava, 21-3-2 (10), had to come off the canvas to annex the vacant WBC Female title with a ten round UD against Shantel Martinez, 8-4 (1).

IBF middleweight boss Sebastian Sylvester kept his title last night against late replacement opponent Billy Lyell at Jahnsportforum in Neubradenburg, Germany.
American veteran Lyell, 21-8 (4), used his experience to get into the later rounds against the stocky, volume punching champion but Sylvester, 33-3 (16), maintained a pace that proved too much for the challenger.
The end came at 0:37 of round ten with the champion well ahead on the cards as Lyell's corner pulled their man out of the contest.
Sylvester makes the first defense of the title he won in the same arena last August in a split decision against Giovanni Lorenzo. More...

Irish southpaw Brian Magee scored the biggest victory of his career last night at the NRGi Arena in Aarhus, Denmark by stopping Mads Larsen in a clash for the vacant European super middleweight title.
For Magee, 33-3-1 (23), the victory comes at the culmination of a mercurial ten year ride through the professional ranks and is particularly sweet given the Belfast man's controversial split decision loss to Vitali Tsypko for the same title in 2005.
After suffering a stoppage loss to current WBC champ Carl Froch for the British and Commonwealth crowns in 2006, Magee had achieved a 7-0-1 mark going into last night's bout, drawing with Tony Oakey for the British light heavyweight strap in 2007 before dropping back down to super middle to win the British belt against Stevie Maguire a year later.
Denmark's Larsen, 51-3 (38), also a southpaw, had unsuccessfully challenged Sven Ottke for the IBF trophy in 2003 but recovered to win the European title later that year before promptly retiring until 2007. More...

Last night, at the Bellahouston Sports Centre in Glasgow, Scotland, Tommy Gilmour and Matchroom Sport hosted a Friday fightnight which would see Lee McAllister of Aberdeen defend his Commonwealth Lightweight title for the second time when he faced Ghanaian - Samuel Amaoko.
Sporting a red striped hairdo – the colours of Aberdeen, his favourite football team, McAllister had huge crowd support.
A very cautious start from both men, Amaoko keeps a high guard – looking for the counter-punch. Both boxers keep up a ‘twitchy’ stance hoping to encourage a punch that they can counter.
Inside the last minute of round three, the Aberdeen Assassin lands a decent right to the face of Amaoko, who has to cover up in the corner.
Round five and McAllister lands another right to the head of the Ghanaian who is pressured in to the corner. McAllister keeps him there and unleashes a barrage of shots.
Amaoko continues the following rounds with a half-hearted effort - throwing few punches. More...

One of the most popular boxers in Mexico is in action tonight at Restaurante Arroyo in Mexico City as Jorge Arce looks to bounce back from defeat by challenging for the vacant WBO super fly title.
Arce, 52-6-1 (40), has lost two of his last three during the last year and is coming off a failed bid for the IBF super fly crown against Simphiwe Nonngqayi this past August.
The 30 year old from Los Mochis will be the favorite this evening as he faces Indonesian veteran Angky Angkota, who rides a six bout win streak into Mexico City.
Angkota has faced the same level of competition as has Arce but the 28 year old Semarang resident holds a victory over Sonny Boy Jaro and over the last five years has only come up short against big punching AJ Banal by decision. More...

Five months after his first bout with Beibut Shumenov ended with a split decision victory for reigning WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo, the Spaniard saw what looked to be a sure win slip through his grasp last night at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
Shumenov started strong and his greater activity carried the early rounds but southpaw Campillo began to pick off the lesser inexperienced Kazak and had evened matters by the end of the fourth with his sharp accuracy.
The fifth saw Campillo wrest away control of the bout from the challenger as Shumenov seemed to tire from his high output early in the fight. For the next four frames, Campillo battered Shumenov, landing with very little difficulty.
When Campillo slowed down by the tenth, Shumenov stepped up to regain the momentum but the last two rounds saw the champion reassert himself and cruise to what looked like a decision win. More...

For Kevin Barry on Friday night in Las Vegas he may finally know what it feels like to walk out of a ring with a champion by his side. The likable and skilled New Zealand born trainer has been seeking this holy grail since 1990 and he has come very close on several occasions.
If his light heavyweight charge Beibut Shumenov can beat Gabriel Campillo, then Barry will finally be the trainer of a champion. “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t important to me,” he said.
Barry’s boxing odyssey has had it’s share of peaks and valleys, but all along the way it has also provided him with some delightful surprises. In 1984 he boxed for New Zealand in the Olympic Games. In the semi-finals he was being thoroughly beaten by Evander Holyfield, Evander was disqualified for throwing a punch after the referee yelled break.
It was a controversial decision, and Barry won the Silver Medal, while Holyfield settle for the Bronze. It was something of a tainted silver medal, but those Olympics provided him with a much bigger prize.
On the plane going to the Olympics he met Tony Moss, a gymnast for New Zealand. Now, 26 years later, she remains Mrs. Tonya Barry. The couple has three children together and Tonya has been a voice of encouragement for Barry during the difficult times in his career as a boxing trainer.
Kevin is best known as the trainer of David Tua, who had a successful run as a heavyweight contender under Barry’s tutelage, but he fell short of winning a world title. About six years ago the two men had a bitter falling out that led to court battles and plenty of acrimony. Just recently have the legal battles ended. More...
