Tonight, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, England, former two-time WBO heavyweight champion and current WBC international cruiserweight champion Herbie Hide enters as the bookie's favourite into Prizefighter: The Cruiserweights II.

Hide is 48-4 with 43 of those wins coming inside the distance and 26 of those stoppages not going past the second round. He is currently plying his trade at cruiserweight in Germany, the last time he fought on British soil was back in late 2008.

His first bout of the night will be against Wayne Brooks who is 5-2-2 with 2 KO’s. On paper, this should be a walk in the park for Hide, in fact if it was not for Prizefighter this fight would never have been made in the first place. Brooks’s biggest achievement of his career has been that he fought for the Welsh area light heavy title, and lost in a close fight.

That is the beauty of Prizefighter; what at first may seem like a mismatch often ends up being an upset. Who would have expected Danny Williams to have been blown away by Carl Baker in the Heavyweight Prizefighter last year? More...

Boxing In Japan: Montiel Dethrones Longtime WBC Champ Hasegawa In Tokyo

By Danny Wilson April 30th, 2010 All Boxing Results

In a shocking upset, Mexico's Fernando Montiel unseated reigning WBC bantamweight champion Hozumi Hasegawa today at Nihon Budokan in Tokyo.

Montiel, who had previously held the WBO flyweight and super fly titles, moved up to 118 pounds in 2008, capturing the WBO bantam strap in February by defeating Cisco Morales in Las Vegas, NV.

But Hasegawa was a far more difficult target, having seen the WBC crown through ten defenses since winning it four years ago from Veeraphol Sahaprom in 2006.

Hasegawa had improved significantly as a champion, stopping his last five challengers over the course of ten rounds and was the definite favorite going into this hometown defense against Montiel. More...

Boxing In Australia: Sherrington Stops Williams In Broadbeach

By Bruce Dingo April 30th, 2010 All Boxing Results

One of Australia's top super middles was back in action on Thursday as Les Sherrington won the biggest fight of his eight year pro career.

27 year old local man Sherrington was all business against America's Rubin Williams, mounting a surging attack from the first bell that put the visitor on the defensive.

Williams could have been biding his time, waiting for Sherrington to run down but that moment never came as a bad cut suffered by the Michigan native forced a halt to the proceedings at 2:57 of the fourth frame.

Sherring was ahead on all three scorecards by a margin of 30-27 and successfully defended his PABA and WBF crowns, raising his record to 26-5 (17).

Williams, who came into the contest overweight and therefore unable to capture the belts had he won the bout, loses for the seventh straight time, falling to 29-9-1 (16). More...

Boxing Perspective: Lucian Bute

By Daxx Kahn April 29th, 2010 All Boxing Articles

Is the Super Six Tournament Lucian Bute’s blueprint to the super middleweight throne?

It is good to be a super middleweight these days. The division while having some great fighters throughout its years such as James Toney, Roy Jones Jr, Michael Nunn, Joe Calzaghe, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, for some reason has failed to keep up momentum like the welterweight, middleweight or even light heavyweight divisions.

Reasons such as not enough elite fighters campaigning at once, fighters at the tail end of their careers, hopefuls that never panned out or ones that even after becoming title holders remained fairly obscure to the mainstream media of the sport have all at one time or another helped hinder the division from being “The” place to be, even if for a short period of time.

Even when big name fights such as Jones vs. Toney or Eubank vs. Benn did take place nothing followed up to keep the public's interest peaked.

When Joe Calzaghe, who will probably go down as the best 168lb fighter in history due to his longevity and dominance as champion, took leave in 2008 in search of Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr at light heavyweight, many thought the weight class would once again fall into obscurity, putting the divisions top spot into the hands of long thought of number two man Mikkel Kessler.

While Kessler failed to pick up the momentum, Calzaghe had built himself and went about his business fighting second tier opponents forced upon him by the WBA, severe critics began to believe the division would once again fall into disarray and turn into an open season for the top spot with no one really good enough to truly claim what Joe had left behind or worse yet top fighters of the division would begin to abandon the weight class all together looking for broader horizons. Boxing Results: Maccarinelli Wins European Title In Russia

By Boxing Press April 29th, 2010 All Boxing Results

Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli's massive one punch power gained the Welshman the European title in Saint Petersburg, Russia on Tuesday.

Maccarinelli, 32-4 (24), needed less than a minute to stamp out the aspirations of local hero Alexander Kotlobay, 18-2-1 (12), and capture the Continental crown via first round stoppage.

It was a night of fireworks at Yubileiny Sports Palace as there were two additional first round knockouts in title bouts.

Light heavyweight Dmitry Sukhotsky, 15-1 (10), finished off veteran Pablo Daniel Zamora Nieves, 24-8-1 (15), to annex the vacant IBF International strap while welterweight Sherali Mamadaliev, 11-0 (6), made short work of Belgian lightweight Herve De Luca, 15-5-1 (7), for the PABA and WBO European welter belts.
