Taylor-Ouma
When Kassim Ouma heard last Friday (Aug. 18) ESPN 2 boxing analyst Teddy Atlas mention a potential Ouma-Jermain Taylor fight for the world middleweight title in December, “it was one of the happiest days of my life,” he said. "I have nothing but the utmost respect for Jermain Taylor as a person and a champion and it certainly would be an honor for me to fight him, even if it has to be in his town (Little Rock, AR),” said Ouma. “Big fights like that get me pumped up.”
Ouma, like everyone else in the business, had heard Taylor’s promoter Lou DiBella say that he (DiBella) wanted to get Taylor an easy fight after going back-to-back-to-back with Bernard Hopkins (twice) and Winky Wright.
DiBella even had mention Bozo The Clown as a possible foe for Taylor.
Ouma says he would wear a Bozo The Clown outfit into the ring.
“And if Jermain really doesn’t want to fight me, what about Winky or (Antonio) Margarito. Everone is saying how “bad’ Margarito is. Well, let’s find out how bad he really is. Let me fight him.”
Says J Russell Peltz, who co-promotes Ouma with Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Productions: “I have no problem with Jermain Taylor fighting Bozo The Clown. My problem would be with HBO televising it. HBO and Showtime fights should be for the crème de la crème, not for tune-ups. In years gone by, when fighters would ask for tune-ups, we would tell them to go to the auto body shop.
“Throughout the first 60 or 70 years of the 20th century, when champions wanted easy paydays, they boxed non-title fights scheduled for 10 rounds. Some of those so-called easy fights were as tough as championship fights.
“I remember when Willie Pastrano, after he stole Harold Johnson’s light-heavyweight title in 1963, got beat up in a non-title fight afterward by Gregorio Peralta, of Argentina. Then they made the rematch for the title and Pastrano won on cuts.
“Same thing happened a few years earlier to Archie Moore, who went to Italy to pick up some easy money in a 10-rounder with Guilio Rinaldi, and lost. The next year Moore defended his light-heavyweight title against Rinaldi in Madison Square Garden and won.
“My point is that Taylor should do whatever he wants, but HBO should only televise the best fighters in the best fights. That way, we won’t have to watch mismatches like Roy Jones vs. Ricky Frazier or Bernard Hopkins vs. Morrade Hakkar.”
Kassim Ouma Jermain Taylor
Home town hero Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor, the Undisputed and Undefeated World Middleweight Champion, will put his title on the line against Kassim “The Dream” Ouma on Saturday night, December 9, at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas, when DiBella Entertainment presents in association with Golden Boy Promotions and Peltz Boxing Promotions “Home for the Holidays: The Return of a Champion,” it was announced today by DBE president Lou DiBella.
HBO’s World Championship Boxing will telecast the event at 10:00 p.m. ET/ 7:00 p.m. PT & 9:00 p.m. CT.
This compelling title encounter pits Taylor (25-0-1, 17 KO’s), the megastar and favorite son of Arkansas against the cagey southpaw and resurgent Former World Champion Ouma (25-2-1, 15 KO’s).
Taylor will be making his sixth pro appearance in Little Rock, and his third at Alltel Arena.
Taylor first captured the Undisputed Middleweight Championship against the legendary Bernard Hopkins on July 16th 2005 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, with a 12 round split decision triumph. He defended the title for the first time in a rematch on December 3, 2005 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas with a unanimous decision victory over the future Hall of Famer. Next, on June 17, 2006, in Memphis, Taylor successfully defended his title when he and Winky Wright fought to a draw. Taylor has not tasted defeat in his pro career, upending the likes of Former World Champions William Joppy and Raul Marquez, and “Contender” Champion Grady Brewer.
Ouma has won his last four contests to again emerge as a contender for the middleweight championship, most recently handing the highly regarded Sechew Powell his first defeat on August 5 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. Ouma, the 27 year old native of Kampala, Uganda, has also downed the likes of Verno Phillips, Marco Antonio Rubio, Kofi Jantuah and Carlos Bojorquez during an eight year pro career.
“Arkansas is Jermain Taylor Country and DBE’s home away from home. This title defense against the outstanding Kassim Ouma belongs at Alltel Arena, and we are thrilled to be able to deliver it,” said Taylor’s promoter, Lou DiBella.
“There’s nothing like home cooking, and I am proud to be fighting again in Little Rock,” said Taylor. “Since it is my first title defense in my hometown, it is sure to be a very special night, and I look forward to putting on a great show for all of my fans.”
“Fighting for the world middleweight title is a dream come true for me,” said Ouma. “After I lost to Roman Karmazin, it seemed like the end of the world. But I worked my way back and I know that I earned this fight with Jermain. I got a second chance and I will make the most of it.”
Jermain Taylor v Kassim Ouma
Jermain Taylor, 28, is one of boxing's brightest stars and one of Arkansas' most popular athletes. The fight with Ouma will mark his first defense in his home state. He won the title by defeating the legendary middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins on July 16, 2005, and repeated the win in the rematch on December 3, 2005.
Taylor is known as much for his quiet charm and rugged good looks as he is for his boxing skill, but he's developed one of the game's most impressive resumes. He won a bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics after becoming the first Arkansas ever to compete in the Olympics.
He quickly showed his amateur success was no fluke, reeling off seven consecutive wins, including five knockouts, in his first year alone as a pro. But he'll face one of his most difficult challenges in Ouma, who is a former world title holder and is noted as one of the most active fighters in the business. Ouma consistently sets records for punch outputs and routinely throws more than 100 punches a round.
The Jermain Taylor vs. Kasim Ouma 12 round main event is being promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Golden Boy Promotions and Peltz Boxing on December 9th at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock.
Taylor v Ouma
World Middleweight Champion Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor will don boxing gloves instead of a Santa suit, but he’ll get the opportunity to deliver a present when he defends his title at home in North Little Rock, Arkansas for the first time on Saturday, December 9 at Alltel Arena. Taylor (25-0-1, 17 KOs) will put his title at stake in front of his hometown fans which will be aired on HBO's World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00PM (ET) / 9:00PM (CT) / 7:00PM (PT) when he takes on former World Champion Kassim “The Dream” Ouma (25-2-1, 15 KOs). The 12-round main event is being promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Golden Boy Promotions and Peltz Boxing.

“There’s no place like home and there’s no place I would rather defend my title,” said Taylor, whose last appearance in Arkansas was a one-sided decision over ex-middleweight champion William Joppy on December 4, 2004. “I have a lot of respect for Kassim Ouma. I know he’s hungry and he’s coming to get this title and we’ll give the fans a great night of boxing.”

“I watched Ouma against Sechew Powell, and excellent fighter who I have sparred with and let me tell you, the man comes to fight,” Taylor said of Ouma, who handed Powell his first pro loss on Aug. 5. “I respect that. He’s not the type of fighter who worries about technique. He throws punches and comes to win.”
Ouma, who will be 28 just three days after the fight, was born in Uganda. At 6, he was kidnapped and forced to join the national resistance army.
Andre Berto (15-0, 13 KOs), who is winning acclaim from many boxing writers as the top young fighter in the game, will meet gritty veteran Miguel Figueroa (24-5-1, 14 KOs) in the co-feature. Berto competed for Haiti in the 2004 Olympics and won a bronze medal for the U.S. in the 2003 World Championships. Only four of his bouts have gone more than four rounds.
As another treat for the home fans, former world heavyweight title challenger Dominick Guinn of Hot Springs, Ark., will also fight on the card. The opponent for Guinn (26-4-1, 18 KOs) will be Zach Page (12-8-1, 4 KO's) who is coming off a win against former Light Heavyweight Champion Louis Del Valle.
